A one-day mismatch is not automatically a software error: one app may calculate a date while another follows a local announcement. For religious observance, use the announcement from the authority or community you follow.
Why apps show different Hijri dates
The Hijri calendar is lunar, but there is not just one way to determine when a month begins. An app might use a precomputed calendar, calculate dates using a particular astronomical rule set, or draw on a calendar or announcement associated with a country or religious authority. Those choices can produce different dates.
Calculation (hisab) uses specified criteria
Hisab means calculation: a calendar date is generated using astronomical calculations and a chosen set of criteria. Different calculated calendars need not apply the same criteria. NU Online, for example, says its calendar uses hisab based on MABIMS criteria. Its date is therefore an expression of that method, not a universal Hijri date for every community. NU Online explains its calendar method.
Sighting and announcements can set observance dates
Rukyat refers to observing the crescent. A month may begin according to a sighting or an official announcement, and the criteria for accepting a sighting—and the authority making the decision—can vary. In Southeast Asia, regional approaches include criteria-based visibility and actual-sighting practices. A calculated date and an announced date can consequently differ.

Official calendars and religious decisions can have different roles
A calendar used for civil or administrative purposes does not necessarily settle a religious observance date. In the Saudi context, the sources distinguish the calculated Umm al-Qura calendar from religious dates that may be confirmed separately. That distinction should not be generalized to every country, but it is a reason not to assume that an official-looking calendar is the observance authority for everyone. The Umm al-Qura calendar site and its official app listing describe the calendar adopted in the Kingdom and date conversion; that does not make it the authority for observance elsewhere.
How to tell which date applies to you
First decide what the date is for. A date for routine planning, a civil form, and a religious observance may call for different sources. Then compare the apps’ methods and authorities rather than treating one display as inherently correct.

- Authority and geography: Identify the country, religious authority, or community whose calendar you need.
- Method: Check whether the app names a calculated calendar or criteria such as Umm al-Qura or MABIMS, or whether it follows local sighting or announcements.
- Purpose: Distinguish a civil or administrative date from a date announced for observance.
- Data source: If the app explains its source, note whether it uses an official calendar, a computed estimate, or stored calendar data. A calendar-provider explainer identifies stale offline data as a possible cause of discrepancies, but that possibility is not established for every app or platform.
The MABIMS API FAQ distinguishes official MABIMS data from computed estimates; the FAQ helps explain those terms but is not itself a national government announcement. If you need an official observance date, check the relevant authority’s announcement rather than treating a forecast or general conversion as confirmation.

- Record the date being compared. Write down the same Gregorian date, the Hijri date each app displays, and the time zone or location in use.
- Find each app’s calendar method. Look for a named calendar, source, or method in the app’s calendar settings or information. Available labels and settings differ by app and operating system; the sources do not establish a single current settings path for all major apps.
- Check the time of the change. If the disagreement appears near evening, see whether one app changes the Hijri date at sunset while another changes it at the local civil-day boundary. Calendar-provider guidance raises this as a possible explanation, but behavior varies and is not documented universally.
- Compare against the right authority. Use the relevant country or community source for an observance date, or the appropriate civil calendar for administrative use.
- Send a useful bug report if needed. Include the app or page, Gregorian date, displayed Hijri date, expected date, and the authority or document that supports the expected result. This is the detail requested in provider support guidance.
Calendar services can also differ in how they implement a method or obtain updates. A mismatch alone does not establish which app is wrong; compare its stated method and source with the date you need.
