A Google Photos edit can look different because it may be a standard adjustment, a generative AI result, or an edit saved over the original. The exact cause depends on the tool you used; the difference alone does not identify what happened. On Android, compare the preview with the original by opening the photo, tapping Edit, then pressing and holding the image preview. If you want to undo an edit saved to the photo, choose Revert. For future edits, choose Save as copy when available to keep the original unchanged.
Why the edited photo may look different
Google Photos has more than one kind of editing feature. Standard tools adjust or act on an existing image, while generative features create content. A change may be an intended adjustment or an output from a generative feature; without knowing which tool was used and seeing the photo, it is not possible to identify the specific cause.
Standard adjustments and actions
These tools edit the existing photo. If the result looks unlike what you expected, compare it with the original before deciding whether to keep or undo the change. Google’s Android editing guidance explains how to compare them: Edit your photos on Android.
Generative AI features
Generative tools can produce results that differ more substantially from the source image. Google warns that these features “may give unexpected or inaccurate results.” That warning applies to the generative creation features covered in Google’s AI creation guidance; it does not establish that every unexpected-looking edit was generated or inaccurate.

Compare the edit with the original on Android
- Open the photo in the Google Photos app.
- Tap Edit.
- Press and hold the image preview to see the original, then release to return to the edited view.
This comparison helps you decide whether to keep the result or reverse it. Google documents this gesture for the Android editor; the computer editor has its own interface, described in Google Photos editing help for computers.

Revert an edit saved to the photo
Open the photo, tap Edit, then choose Revert. Google says this undoes edits on the edited photo. Its troubleshooting guidance for photos that appear incorrectly also recommends reverting edits before saving a backup copy and re-uploading it; see My photos appear incorrectly.

Save future edits as a copy
When saving, choose Save as copy if the option is available. Google says this creates a separate edited photo and leaves the original unchanged. The copy itself cannot be undone with the Revert control, so keep in mind that the original remains as a separate photo rather than being restored from the copy.

Google Photos features and controls vary by editor, device, and feature. Check that you are using the app or web editor you intended, and whether the tool is supported on your device or needs to be downloaded. Google documents Pixel-only tools and device requirements for some Android editing features. Generative creation features can have additional eligibility conditions, including backup, internet, region, age, and personal-account requirements. Requirements are feature-specific and may change, so check the relevant Google help page for the tool you are trying to use.
