Google Glass struggled as a consumer product because its $1,500 Explorer Edition paired a conspicuous, distracting design with limited everyday utility and social friction. Google later repositioned Glass for workplace use, then ended Enterprise Edition sales in March 2023 and support in September 2023. In May 2025, Google announced Android XR glasses prototypes with eyewear partners, but gave no consumer release date.
Why did Google Glass fail?
Glass reached consumers before it had established a compelling everyday role. The early Explorer Edition was expensive, limited in practical appeal, visually conspicuous, and raised questions about wearing a camera around other people. These factors offer a credible explanation for its weak consumer fit, but the available reporting does not establish one definitive cause or quantify how much each factor affected adoption.
Price and usefulness
Axios reported that the Explorer Edition launched at $1,500, a historical introduction price rather than a current offer. A small display and limited functions made that cost difficult to justify for many everyday users. Sergey Brin later acknowledged mistakes with Glass, telling Google I/O, “I definitely feel like I made a lot of mistakes with Google Glass,” and describing it as too expensive and too distracting, according to Axios’s May 28, 2025 report. His comments are a retrospective view, not a formal causal postmortem.
Appearance, distraction, and social acceptance
The visible, head-worn design made Glass difficult to treat like an ordinary pair of glasses, while its camera could make people nearby unsure whether they were being recorded. The display and interactions also risked distracting the wearer. These were social and design challenges alongside the product’s price and limited usefulness; the reporting does not establish privacy concerns as the single reason consumers did not adopt it.

Is Google Glass discontinued?
Google discontinued sales and support for Glass Enterprise Edition, but its announcement did not say that existing devices would stop working immediately. The distinction matters: sales ended first, while support continued for another six months.

Why did Google move Glass into enterprise use?
Google recast Glass Enterprise Edition 2 as an “assisted reality wearable” for businesses, rather than a general consumer gadget. The intended role was to give hands-on workers and professionals glanceable, voice-activated help while keeping their hands free. Google said the device and frame were sold separately, allowing buyers to choose frames, including options for prescription lenses. Its Enterprise Edition 2 getting-started guide describes that workplace-focused use.
Why did Google end Enterprise Edition?
Google’s discontinuation FAQ gave the sales and support dates but did not state a business reason. The Register noted that silence and speculated that profitability or usage may have been inadequate; that is outside analysis, not an explanation confirmed by Google. A separate example also shows why enterprise AR can be challenging, but does not explain Google’s decision: Snap CEO Evan Spiegel said in a September 2023 review that growing Snap’s enterprise offering required significant incremental investment, web-based AR was technically complex and less engaging for customers, and generative AI had made some try-on experiences easier for companies to create, reducing differentiation. What is Google doing next with smart glasses?
In May 2025, Google described Android XR glasses as phone-connected prototypes with cameras, microphones, speakers, and an optional in-lens display. Google said Gemini could use what the glasses see and hear to provide context-aware assistance, and showed intended examples including messaging, appointments, directions, photography, and live translation. These were announced capabilities and demonstrations, not independently validated benefits or evidence of a released product.
Partners and development status
Google named Gentle Monster and Warby Parker as its initial eyewear partners, said it was advancing software and reference hardware work with Samsung, and reported gathering feedback from trusted testers. The announcement described an aim to make an assistive product that respects the privacy of the wearer and nearby people. It said availability updates would come later, without giving a consumer ship date, final feature list, or price. Google’s account is in its May 2025 Android XR announcement.

What will determine whether the next attempt works?
The relevant test is not simply whether a display or AI assistant can be put into glasses. A future product would need to improve on the everyday fit that challenged the earlier consumer device:
- Wearability: Does it look and feel comfortable enough for routine use?
- Repeated utility: Does it solve frequent problems well enough to justify wearing it?
- Hands-free interaction: Are voice and glanceable information useful without becoming distracting?
- Privacy and social norms: Can wearers and nearby people understand when cameras or microphones are active?
- Price: Is the cost proportionate to the everyday value?
Google’s partner choices and stated attention to privacy identify priorities, but they do not show that these challenges have been solved. Android XR glasses remain an announced effort, not a guaranteed Glass comeback.
