If a Google Calendar event seems too long, too short, or shifted to the wrong clock time, first check whether its saved start and end are wrong or whether it is being displayed in a different time zone. Open the event and inspect both values. If the problem affects only new events, check the default event duration; if times differ across devices or attendees, compare the event, calendar, and device time zones.

First determine whether the duration or displayed time is wrong

An event’s duration is determined by its start and end date and time. A meeting that starts at 10:00 and ends at 11:30 is 90 minutes long, regardless of how another attendee’s clock displays those times. Google Calendar converts events to UTC and displays them in each viewer’s local time; an event can therefore show at different clock times for people in different time zones while representing the same scheduled time. Google’s time-zone guidance explains this behavior.

  • If the event is the wrong length for everyone, check its start and end values and dates.
  • If the length seems right but the clock time differs between people or devices, check time zones before changing the event.
  • If only events you create are consistently too long or short, check the default duration for new events.

Correct the saved event’s start, end, or date

On a computer, open the event in Google Calendar and select Edit. Inspect the start and end date and time, make the correction, then save it. Google’s event-creation guidance covers editing and saving event details.

Check the dates as well as the times. An end date on the following day makes an event cross midnight; an unintended end date can make it appear to last much longer than expected. For recurring events, confirm whether you are changing one occurrence or the series, and choose the appropriate option when saving.

Set the intended time zone for the event

In the event editor, use the time-zone control to choose the region where the event’s time should be anchored. Calendar events are displayed in the viewer’s local time, so a different clock reading alone does not mean the event duration changed. Google also supports assigning separate time zones to an event’s start and end, which can matter for travel or events spanning zones. See Google’s instructions for using Calendar in different time zones.

For a normal meeting that begins and ends in the same place, make sure both endpoints reflect the intended schedule in the event’s zone. If you intentionally set different start and end zones, verify each one rather than assuming the calendar’s main zone controls both.

Change the default duration for new events

The default event duration affects new events; it does not, by itself, change the saved start or end of an existing event. To change it, use the settings for the device or interface where you create events:

Compare Calendar and device time zones

If an event’s clock time looks inconsistent between the web and mobile apps, or changes when viewed on another device, compare the time-zone settings instead of repeatedly editing the event.

  1. Open the event and note its time zone, including whether the start and end use separate zones.
  2. On the web, check Calendar’s primary time zone in settings and compare it with the event’s zone.
  3. On Android or iOS, inspect the Calendar setting for Use device time zone. If it is off, check the manually selected time zone; if it is on, confirm the device’s own time-zone setting.
  4. Compare the same event on another device or with an invitee, noting each viewer’s local time zone. A different clock time can be expected when the zones differ.

Google describes Calendar’s time-zone options and the mobile setting in its time-zone help and Android settings guidance.

Check daylight-saving and changed time-zone rules

Google warns that some past or future events might not reflect daylight-saving changes correctly, and that events created before a region changed its time zone may be wrong. This is a possibility to check, not proof that daylight saving caused a particular mismatch. For an event near a clock change or a regional rule change, open the event and verify its intended local time and time zone against the current schedule. Google’s time-zone guidance describes these limitations.

If the time changes after importing or editing

If the issue appears only after importing an event or editing it on another device, record the event date, event time zone, calendar time zone, device time zone, source calendar or import format, and what changed after saving. This information helps distinguish an incorrect saved value from a display conversion or an import-specific problem.

A 2021 Google Calendar Help Community thread includes an individual report of event timing changing during editing and a volunteer suggestion to check device time-zone settings. It is anecdotal, not evidence that all similar changes have the same cause: the community thread.
