A musty washer smell can also come from residue or damp laundry, but cleaning the drum will not fix a faulty trap, vent, or drain. Start by locating where the odor is strongest, then check the hose against your washer model’s installation instructions.
What can cause a sewage smell from a washing machine?
The smell’s location and timing can help narrow down where to investigate, but they do not prove the cause.

Check the drain hose using your model’s instructions

Do not rely on a single hose-depth measurement found online. Manufacturer instructions can differ, so follow the installation guide for your exact washer model. If you cannot confirm the correct setup, consult the manual or the manufacturer’s support service.

When to clean the washer—and when cleaning is not enough
If the smell is musty and appears to come from the tub, follow your washer’s manual for its tub-clean cycle and approved cleaning products. GE recommends monthly tub cleaning to address soap and fabric-softener residue. Wet laundry left sitting and debris in a cleanable pump filter can also contribute to washer odors, according to Whirlpool; check your manual before cleaning or removing a filter.
A washer cleaner may help with residue-related odor. It will not repair a plumbing fault: if the smell is persistently sewage-like, strongest at the standpipe, or accompanied by drainage trouble, do not treat repeated cleaning as a substitute for checking the drain system.

When to call a plumbing professional
Contact a plumbing professional if a sewage odor persists after routine washer checks, is strongest around the standpipe, or occurs with drainage problems.
