Event ID 256 has no single meaning across Windows. Check the event’s Source/Provider, Log Name, and full message before deciding what it means. In one documented, older Windows case, PlugPlayManager Event ID 256 is a warning that an application did not respond to a device-interface notification within 30 seconds; Microsoft says that specific warning can be ignored. Other providers can use the same number for unrelated events.
Why Event ID 256 needs context
Windows event IDs are not unique across every provider. The same number can identify different events depending on the source and log channel, so Event ID 256 alone cannot tell you whether there is a problem or what to change. Microsoft advises interpreting an event in the context of its source and surrounding entries: Microsoft’s event-log troubleshooting guidance.
For example, Microsoft documents Event ID 256 from PlugPlayManager in the System log, while a Microsoft-hosted example uses Event ID 256 from DPTF in the Application log for an unrelated _OSC/ESIF error. The provider and message—not the number—distinguish these cases.
What PlugPlayManager Event ID 256 means
In Microsoft’s archived guidance for Windows 2000 and Windows XP, PlugPlayManager Event ID 256 reports: “Timed out sending notification of device interface change to window of [program or service name and/or GUID].” It means an application that registered to receive Plug and Play device-interface notifications did not respond within 30 seconds of receiving a notification. See Microsoft’s archived PlugPlayManager article.

For that documented legacy case, Microsoft characterizes the entry as a warning that can be ignored. The article applies to Windows 2000/XP-era systems; it does not establish that every Event ID 256 on a current Windows installation has the same cause or needs no action.
How to identify your Event ID 256
- Open Event Viewer and select the Event ID 256 entry.
- Record the Log Name, Source or Provider, Level, Task Category, and timestamp.
- Copy the complete text from both the General and Details tabs. The exact message and any named program, service, device, or GUID can clarify what triggered the event.
- Inspect entries immediately before and after it. Look for events from the same provider or ones that mention the same device or service, especially if a visible problem occurred at that time.
These details give you the information needed to distinguish the archived PlugPlayManager timeout from a different provider’s Event ID 256.

What to do based on the provider and symptoms
If the source is PlugPlayManager
If the message matches Microsoft’s documented timeout, treat it as a warning rather than evidence of device failure. Microsoft says no action is required for that specific legacy case. If you also experience a device problem or startup delay, note whether it occurs at the same time and investigate that symptom separately; the event’s number alone does not establish a cause.
If the source is DPTF or another provider
Do not apply the PlugPlayManager interpretation to a DPTF, CAPI2, device-vendor, or application event. Use the provider’s documentation and the complete event message to guide troubleshooting. Microsoft-hosted material demonstrates that DPTF can also use ID 256, for an _OSC/ESIF error: Microsoft-hosted DPTF example.
