AI data centers need so much electricity because they run large numbers of power-hungry accelerator servers, often at high utilization, and must also power the cooling, networking, storage and reliability systems that keep those servers working. AI adds pressure by expanding both the number of accelerated servers and the kinds of tasks people run: video generation, reasoning and agentic workloads can use far more energy per query than simple text generation. The global share of electricity is still modest, but demand is growing quickly and can be concentrated enough to strain local grids.
Why do AI data centers use so much power?
The biggest load is computation. AI systems perform large numbers of mathematical operations on specialized processors, and data centers group many of those processors into continuously operating server clusters. Electricity is also needed to move data among the processors, store it, convert incoming power into usable forms, and remove the heat the equipment produces.
Training and inference both contribute, but in different ways. Training repeatedly processes large datasets to build or update a model. Inference is the work of using a trained model to answer requests, and it can continue throughout the day as people and software make queries. A facility’s demand therefore depends not only on the model but on how many servers are installed, how heavily they are used, and what workloads they serve.
AI does not make every data-center task equally energy-intensive. A short text request is not equivalent to generating video or carrying out a multi-step reasoning or agentic task. The mix and volume of activity matter as much as the efficiency of an individual processor.

Where does the electricity go inside a data center?
Servers account for the largest share in the International Energy Agency’s breakdown, but the facility overhead is substantial and varies by site. The following are approximate shares of modern data-center electricity reported by the IEA in 2025; they are not a universal allocation for every AI facility.
| Use | Approximate share | What it supports |
|---|---|---|
| Servers | About 60% | Processors and other equipment performing computation |
| Storage | About 5% | Systems that retain and supply data |
| Networking | Up to 5% | Switches and other equipment moving data |
| Cooling | About 7% in efficient hyperscale facilities to over 30% in less-efficient enterprise facilities | Fans, pumps, chillers, cooling towers and liquid-cooling loops that carry heat away |
These categories do not describe every site in the same way, and their shares depend on facility design and operating conditions. In particular, cooling can consume a much smaller fraction in an efficient hyperscale facility than in a less-efficient enterprise facility. A share is also not the same as an absolute amount: if the servers use more electricity, cooling demand may rise even if cooling becomes a smaller percentage of the total.
Why do chips lead the load?
Accelerators such as GPUs can perform far more computation per server than conventional CPU systems. That capability is useful for AI, but it also means that a facility can pack a great deal of computing capacity into a relatively small footprint. The IEA identifies the deployment of accelerated servers and their higher power density as important drivers of future data-center demand.
Power density matters because the facility must deliver enough electricity to the equipment concentrated in each area. A small building footprint does not necessarily mean a small electrical requirement: a dense accelerator cluster may need a very large connection to the grid.
Why does cooling need electricity?
Nearly all electricity used by computing equipment ultimately becomes heat. Fans, pumps, chillers, cooling towers and, in some designs, liquid-cooling loops move that heat out of the equipment and facility so that components stay within operating limits. Cooling is therefore a direct consequence of running the servers, not an optional add-on.

The amount depends on how a site is designed and on its climate and cooling technology. This is why the IEA’s reported cooling shares range from about 7% in efficient hyperscale sites to over 30% in less-efficient enterprise sites. Those figures describe a range of facility conditions, not a fixed surcharge that can be applied to every AI workload.
What do networking, storage and backup systems add?
AI clusters exchange data among accelerators and storage at high speed. Networking equipment, storage systems and load balancers add to the load alongside the servers. Facilities also install uninterruptible power supplies, backup generators and power-conditioning equipment to meet reliability requirements. These systems may not operate at full output all the time, but their presence is part of the infrastructure needed to keep service available.

Why can AI use more electricity than an ordinary data center?
AI can raise demand by changing the hardware mix, the intensity of use and the work being performed. Conventional CPU servers and accelerator servers are not interchangeable measures of consumption: accelerated servers increase computing capacity and power density, and a cluster can run intensive workloads continuously. As more AI services are deployed, facilities may also add more accelerator servers or use existing capacity more heavily.
The workload mix is changing too. The IEA’s 2026 update says energy used per AI task has fallen by at least an order of magnitude annually in recent years. At the same time, it reports that video generation, reasoning and agentic tasks can consume hundreds or thousands of times more energy per query than simple text generation. These statements describe different sides of the same trend: efficiency per task can improve while the number and complexity of tasks grow.
As a result, there is no single “AI electricity use per query” that applies across services. A meaningful comparison needs to specify the task, the hardware, how efficiently the facility operates, and whether the figure is for one query or a larger volume of use. The IEA says more systematic energy-use disclosure from technology companies is needed, so published per-query estimates should not be treated as fixed physical constants.

How much electricity do data centers use, and how much could they use?
Forecasts vary by geography, year, facility boundary and assumptions about accelerator shipments, utilization and cooling. The figures below refer to different scopes, so they should be read as separate estimates rather than directly compared as if they measured the same thing.
| Geography and measure | Estimate | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Global data-center electricity consumption in 2024 | About 415 TWh, or 1.5% of global electricity | IEA estimate reported in 2025 |
| Global data-center electricity consumption in 2030 | About 945 TWh | IEA 2025 base-case projection |
| U.S. data-center electricity consumption in 2030 | 649 TWh | LBNL 2026 reference case |
| U.S. data-center share of electricity in 2030 | 11.8%; scenario range of 9.5%–15.3% | LBNL 2026 reference case and scenario range |
| Global generation serving data centers | 460 TWh in 2024 to over 1,000 TWh in 2030 | IEA 2025 projection |
The global consumption estimates and the global generation figures are not identical measures. The IEA’s 2025 figures put data-center consumption at about 415 TWh in 2024 and project about 945 TWh in 2030 in its base case; its estimate for generation serving data centers is 460 TWh in 2024 and over 1,000 TWh in 2030. The difference reflects that electricity generation serving a load and electricity consumed at data centers are distinct quantities.
The U.S. estimate is a national total, but grid impacts are often regional. The IEA reported in 2025 that nearly half of U.S. data-center capacity is in five regional clusters. When demand grows quickly in a concentrated area, local grid effects can be more pronounced than the global share suggests.
These numbers do not establish that a single forecast will come true. IEA notes substantial uncertainty in current and future consumption, while LBNL’s 2030 U.S. scenarios range from 9.5% to 15.3% of U.S. electricity. Different assumptions about uptake, hardware deployment, utilization, facility efficiency and grid constraints produce different outcomes.
Will AI make the grid run out of electricity?
The available estimates point to a fast-growing electricity load, not to a single inevitable global shortage. Data centers used about 1.5% of global electricity in 2024 according to the IEA, but the demand is concentrated in particular facilities and regional clusters. That concentration means a grid connection, local generation or transmission capacity can become a practical constraint even when the global share remains comparatively small.

Whether a particular region can serve new data centers depends on where they are built, how quickly grid infrastructure and generation can be added, and when the demand arrives. The U.S. scenario range published by LBNL for 2030 illustrates that forecasts are not one certain number. National or global totals alone cannot show whether a specific local grid has enough capacity at the required time.
The supply mix is also expected to change. The IEA projects that renewables will meet nearly half of additional data-center electricity demand through 2030, while natural gas and coal together meet over 40%. Nuclear power is expected to become more important after 2030. These are projections about supply serving additional demand, not a guarantee that every facility or region will use the same mix.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If AI gets more efficient, why is power demand still rising?
Efficiency measures how much energy is used for a given task; total electricity use also depends on how many tasks are run and what those tasks involve. The IEA’s 2026 update reports that energy per AI task has fallen by at least an order of magnitude annually in recent years, while more energy-intensive applications such as video generation, reasoning and agentic tasks can use hundreds or thousands of times more energy per query than simple text generation.
Efficiency can therefore lower the cost of running an existing task without reducing the total load if use expands or shifts toward more demanding tasks. More accelerated servers, greater utilization and new workloads can offset lower energy per task. The outcome depends on the balance among efficiency improvements, adoption and the capabilities people choose to use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThis is why projections need both technical and behavioral assumptions. A forecast based only on a chip becoming more efficient misses the effect of deploying more chips and running more work; a forecast based only on workload growth misses possible efficiency gains. IEA’s call for more systematic energy-use disclosure reflects the difficulty of measuring those changing factors consistently.

How should you interpret a data-center electricity number?
Before comparing two reported figures, check what each one measures. A data-center total may cover all facility electricity, while a per-task number concerns one workload under particular conditions. A forecast may represent a base case or a range, and a global total can conceal local concentration.
- Workload: distinguish model training, ordinary inference, high-volume inference, video, reasoning and agentic tasks.
- Hardware and use: note whether the facility uses conventional CPU servers or accelerator servers, and whether utilization is specified.
- Facility efficiency: look for cooling share, power-usage effectiveness, climate and cooling technology where disclosed.
- Location: separate global or national demand from regional grid impacts, including transmission and connection constraints.
- Time and scenario: identify whether a figure is a measured estimate for a past year, a reference case, or one of several future scenarios.
Without those details, a comparison may look more precise than the underlying evidence allows. The IEA and LBNL projections are useful for understanding the scale and direction of demand, but their assumptions and scopes should travel with the numbers.
What does this mean for people using AI?
For a reader, the practical point is that electricity demand is driven by infrastructure and aggregate use, not simply by the fact that a service is labeled “AI.” A brief text interaction and a computationally intensive video or agentic workload are not equivalent. The IEA’s 2026 update says simple text queries typically consume less electricity than running a television over the same period, while other AI tasks can require far more energy per query.
That comparison is a general illustration, not a universal meter reading for every product or request. Actual energy depends on the workload and the systems serving it, and the IEA says company disclosure needs to become more systematic. It is therefore more useful to ask what task is being performed and how widely it is being used than to assume one constant electricity cost for all AI.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does one AI prompt use more electricity than watching TV?
It depends on what the prompt asks the system to do. The IEA’s 2026 update says simple text queries typically use less electricity than running a television over the same period, but that comparison should not be generalized to video generation or other more demanding tasks.
Is training a model more energy-intensive than answering questions with it?
There is no single ranking that applies to every model and service. Training repeatedly processes large datasets, while inference can run continuously at high utilization; the total depends on the training run, the volume of requests and the tasks users submit.
Why can a small data center need such a large grid connection?
Accelerated servers can concentrate substantial computing capacity and power demand into a relatively small footprint. The size of a building alone is therefore not a reliable guide to the electrical capacity it needs.
Are AI data centers powered entirely by renewable electricity?
No such general claim is supported by the IEA projection cited here. It projects renewables to supply nearly half of additional data-center electricity demand through 2030, with natural gas and coal together supplying over 40%, and nuclear becoming more important after 2030.
