The reason is that DDR5 moves voltage regulation onto each memory module, adding power-management hardware to the stick. That does not mean every DDR5 kit runs hotter than DDR4 or needs a dedicated fan.
Why DDR5 puts voltage regulation on the memory module
On desktop DDR4 systems, the motherboard handles memory voltage regulation. With DDR5, a power-management integrated circuit (PMIC) on each module manages voltage instead. Corsair says this enables per-module voltage regulation, but it also places power-management components on the memory stick itself. Those components can contribute heat that the module’s design must dissipate. Corsair’s DDR5 Primer describes the change.
The standard DRAM voltage comparison is not, by itself, proof that DDR5 must run hotter: Corsair’s primer lists DDR4 Vdd at 1.2 V and DDR5 Vdd at 1.1 V. Those figures refer to standard DRAM IC voltage, not total module heat or every overclocked memory profile. Enthusiast kits may use higher-than-standard voltage, which can increase the thermal demands on both the memory chips and the on-module power circuitry.
What Corsair’s 2021 warning actually said
On August 6, 2021, Tom’s Hardware reported Corsair DIY marketing director George Makris saying DDR5 “conceivably could run much hotter than DDR4” because voltage regulation had moved from the motherboard onto the module. The important word is could: he described a possibility, especially relevant to enthusiast-grade, higher-voltage configurations—not a measured result for every DDR5 stick. Tom’s Hardware’s report and HotHardware’s contemporaneous coverage both note that the increase had not been quantified as a universal DDR5-versus-DDR4 temperature difference.

Temperature depends on factors such as voltage, memory speed, module construction and system conditions. There is no supported, general temperature delta that can be applied to all DDR5 and DDR4 kits.
Does DDR5 RAM need a fan or liquid cooling?
No blanket active-cooling recommendation follows from Corsair’s warning. Corsair’s support FAQ lists DDR5’s operating-temperature range as 0–95 °C; that is a stated operating range, not a recommended target temperature. The FAQ does not say ordinary DDR5 builds need a RAM fan or liquid cooling. Corsair’s RAM FAQ is the source for that range.

- [Efficient Heat Dissipation] Equipped with a high-performance dual-fan configuration, with a maximum speed of up to 3200 RPM ±10%, delivering a powerful airflow of 16.17 CFM to rapidly remove heat from the memory surface, significantly reducing memory temperature under high loads.
- [Low-Noise Operation] Despite a speed of up to 3200 RPM, thanks to noise reduction design, the maximum operating noise is only 20.17 dBA, providing strong static pressure while maintaining quiet operation, without affecting gaming immersion.
- [Vibrant ARGB Lighting Effects] The front and sides feature wrap-around RGB light strips, with a 3-pin 5V ARGB connector for ARGB daisy-chain control, enabling synchronization with most mainstream motherboard lighting software for immersive RGB atmosphere.
- [Intelligent PWM Temperature Control] Equipped with a 4-pin PWM intelligent temperature control interface, allowing the motherboard to automatically adjust fan speed based on actual memory temperature—maintaining low noise at idle and automatically accelerating during high-frequency read/write operations.
- [Easy Installation] No complex tools or skills required—simply secure the clips on both sides to the memory module. Suitable for DDR/DDR2/DDR3/DDR4/DDR5 and various memory types, providing additional active cooling protection and enhancing overclocking potential. Compatible with memory modules up to 55mm in height.
For a specific system, follow the memory maker’s operating guidance and assess the actual configuration, including any high-voltage profile and airflow around the modules. A one-off temperature reading from another system cannot establish the needs of your kit.
Heat spreaders vary by DDR5 product
DDR5 modules do not all use the same cooling hardware. Corsair describes Vengeance DDR5 as a mainstream design with a standard-height PCB and heat spreader, while Dominator Platinum RGB DDR5 uses DHX cooling and a larger heat spreader. A larger or more elaborate design is a product feature, not evidence that every DDR5 module needs additional active cooling. Corsair also describes DHX design in its Dominator Titanium overview.

- Check the memory’s rated speed and operating profile; higher-voltage enthusiast settings may create different thermal demands from standard settings.
- Check the physical height of the heat spreader against CPU cooler and case clearances. A larger spreader may not fit every build.
- Choose capacity and kit configuration for your workload and what your platform supports; a heat-spreader design does not determine compatibility.
Check compatibility before buying DDR5
DDR4 and DDR5 use different pin layouts and are not interchangeable. Confirm that your motherboard and processor platform support DDR5 before choosing a kit, and verify the motherboard’s memory specifications and the kit’s physical fit. Corsair’s FAQ discusses the difference between DDR4 and DDR5 modules: RAM: FAQ.
If you are already choosing a compatible DDR5 kit, compare its rated profile, capacity, heat-spreader dimensions and fit with your other components. Do not buy a separate RAM fan solely because DDR5 has a PMIC.

What reported temperature readings can—and cannot—show
Tom’s Hardware reported readings from a particular MSI demonstration: a PMIC reached 56 °C, and DDR5 ICs reached 50–51 °C at 1.35 V. These are observations from that stated setup, not a controlled, like-for-like DDR4-versus-DDR5 comparison and not a universal temperature specification. The report on the demonstration does not establish that typical DDR5 systems need liquid-cooled memory.
