That makes China a defensible candidate for Apple’s biggest foldable battleground—not a proven number-one market by a uniform global ranking.
Why China matters to Apple’s foldable strategy
China combines a powerful incumbent with a sizeable forecast opportunity. IDC estimates Huawei held 79.4% of China’s foldable-phone unit shipments and 82.2% of the market’s value in the second quarter of 2026. Those are quarterly estimates, not full-year figures. Huawei’s established product range, consumer familiarity and channel strength make it a formidable competitor for a first-generation Apple device. IDC
At the same time, IDC forecasts China’s iOS foldable segment will grow from 2.0 million units and $4.9 billion in value in 2026 to 4.4 million units and $10.3 billion in 2030. Its forecast for Apple’s share of China’s foldable market by 2030 is 39.7% by units and 50.8% by value. The higher projected value share than unit share points to a premium product mix; neither figure is an achieved result.
“Biggest” is therefore an editorial framing based on China’s incumbent challenge and potential value, not a formal ranking: the available figures do not compare every country using one consistent measure.

What Apple would have to overcome
Huawei’s head start
Huawei’s estimated share gives Apple a steep entry challenge. Brand recognition, an established foldable range and distribution relationships can influence buyers independently of the new device’s specifications. Apple would need to persuade customers to choose a first-generation foldable against a familiar local rival.
Price and the value-versus-volume test
Axios reported that the iPhone Duo was announced at a starting price of $1,999 for 256GB. A high price can support a large share of market value without producing the same share of unit sales, which is consistent with IDC’s higher 2030 value-share forecast. Design, durability and software
IDC describes the Duo as having a 7.6-inch internal display, a 5.4-inch external display and a custom titanium hinge. Its software is intended to support app continuity, side-by-side use and paired workflows. These descriptions establish the announced design and features, not independent performance results.
IDC identifies long-term hinge and display durability, crease visibility and added weight as open questions. TrendForce also describes thinner and lighter designs, crease reduction and long-term reliability as increasingly important areas of foldable-phone competition. The product’s practical appeal will depend not just on screen size, but on whether the folded device is comfortable to carry, holds up over time and makes multitasking useful.

What the launch timing means
Axios reported that Apple debuted the iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026. As of October 3, 2026, preorders were scheduled to begin October 16, with shipping scheduled for October 23. Those dates were still in the future at that point, so there were no post-launch sales results or realized China market-share figures established in the cited material.

TrendForce separately forecasts approximately 20.2 million foldable-phone shipments worldwide in 2026, including about 5 million iPhone Duo units. That is a distinct shipment estimate from a different research firm, not a figure that should be combined with or treated as a reconciliation of IDC’s forecast. TrendForce
Together, the forecasts suggest analysts see substantial room for Apple in foldables, but they do not settle whether the company can convert projections into purchases in China. The clearest near-term test is whether Apple can make its price, hardware and software compelling against Huawei’s entrenched position.
