Children leave school or stop attending for many reasons, and often several pressures combine: household costs, work, conflict, distance, disability-related barriers, language, safety, or a school environment that is not meeting a child’s needs. The most useful first step is to find out what is making attendance or learning difficult for this child, then seek support that addresses that barrier while keeping a route back to recognized schooling open.

How many children are out of school?

UNESCO’s Global Education Monitoring Report estimated that 273 million children, adolescents, and youth were out of school in 2024 (reported in 2026). UNESCO cautions that the figure may undercount children in conflict-affected settings when supplementary humanitarian information is considered. It describes a global measure, not the circumstances of any one child.

Other figures measure different things. UNESCO reported in 2022 that 132 million boys of primary and secondary school age were out of school; this boys-specific estimate should not be added to or treated as directly comparable with the 2024 all-gender figure. UNESCO’s 2024 monitoring page also reported that 650 million leave school without a secondary school certificate. That is a measure of leaving without a credential, not a count of children currently out of school.

Why might a child leave school or stop attending?

There is no single explanation that applies everywhere. A child may be enrolled but miss classes, fall behind, or become disconnected before leaving altogether. Ask what is happening in the child’s particular situation rather than assuming that absence means a lack of interest.

Household costs and pressure to work

Even when tuition is free, families may struggle with costs such as uniforms, books, meals, or transport. A child’s work can also seem necessary to meet immediate household needs, while time spent working competes with school. UNESCO identifies child work as a dropout pressure, particularly for boys in its overview; that does not mean boys everywhere face the same risk or that work is the only factor.

Conflict, displacement, and emergencies

Conflict and other emergencies can close schools, disrupt transport, separate children from familiar routines, or force families to move. Once disrupted, attendance may remain difficult even after a school reopens or a family reaches a new place. UNICEF describes temporary learning spaces and alternative pathways among education responses for children affected by displacement or conflict.

Disability and barriers in the learning environment

A disability does not by itself explain why a child is excluded. Barriers can include inaccessible buildings, stigma, too few trained teachers, and learning materials that are not suitable for the child. UNICEF also emphasizes foundational reading and numeracy skills. If a child cannot access lessons or materials, simply urging them to attend may not address the problem.

Distance, language, and social exclusion

Long or unsafe journeys, lack of instruction in a language a child understands, and discrimination linked to ethnicity or other aspects of identity can all make schooling harder to reach or continue. UNICEF identifies poverty, geography, disability, ethnicity, language, gender, and recurrent emergencies as barriers in Asia and the Pacific. Their combination and importance vary by place.

School climate and unequal risks

A child may disengage when school feels unsafe, unwelcoming, or unresponsive to learning needs. The wider pattern is not identical for every gender: UNESCO reports that girls still face substantial access barriers in many contexts, while boys in many countries are more at risk of repeating grades, failing to progress, or having weaker learning outcomes. These observations are not universal rules about individual children.

What can families do when a child is missing school?

Start with a calm, respectful conversation with the child. If it is safe and appropriate, include someone at the school who can help. The aim is to understand what is happening, not to blame the child or family. Several barriers may be operating at once.

  1. Ask what makes attendance or learning hard right now. Give the child room to talk about practical problems, safety, relationships, lessons, health, or responsibilities outside school.
  2. Identify the main obstacle, without treating this as a diagnosis. Consider cost, distance or transport, safety, disability access, language, learning difficulty, school climate, caregiving or work duties, displacement, or a combination.
  3. Contact the school or local education authority. Ask about attendance support, catch-up teaching, inclusive accommodations, and how a child can return after a long absence. UNICEF describes re-enrolment support and alternative pathways, but what exists depends on location.
  4. Ask whether practical family assistance is available. A school, social service, or community organization may know of help with fees, uniforms, textbooks, food, transport, or other essential materials. UNICEF describes family assistance that enabled school-material purchases in its Asia-Pacific overview; availability and eligibility are local.
  5. Agree on a manageable next step and follow up. Clarify who will do what, when the child can reconnect with learning, and whom to contact if the arrangement is not working. Keep communication open as the child’s needs change.

What support may fit different situations?

Situation to address Support to ask about What to check
Cost or lack of essential materials Help with fees, uniforms, textbooks, food, or transport through a school, social service, or community organization Eligibility, cost to the family, how long help lasts, and whether it removes the actual obstacle
Disability-related access barriers Accessible facilities, trained staff, appropriate learning materials, and a way for the family to participate in learning support Whether accommodations are usable in practice and fit the child’s needs
Learning gaps or prolonged absence Catch-up teaching, attendance support, re-enrolment, or an alternative learning pathway How the child reconnects with recognized schooling and what learning support is provided
Displacement or emergency disruption Temporary learning spaces, community-based schooling, or remote options where suitable and accessible Safety, reliable access, language, continuity, and whether the option is practical for the child

When comparing options, prioritize whether they address the child’s actual barrier. Also consider language and accessibility, safety and travel burden, cost and continuity, and whether the option restores a connection to recognized schooling or offers a credible learning pathway. The available options depend on the country and community.

Can a workbook help a child catch up at home?

A children’s reading or math practice workbook can provide optional extra practice, particularly when foundational skills need attention. Choose material that fits the child’s age, current skill level, language, and accessibility needs; a caregiver or teacher may need to help the child use it effectively.

A workbook is a supplement, not a substitute for safe access to school, trained teaching, disability accommodations, or help with poverty and other barriers. If a child has stopped attending, address the reason and ask about a learning pathway rather than relying on home practice alone.

Finding support in your area

Education services and family assistance vary by location, and there is no single worldwide contact list that can establish what is currently available to a particular family. Start with the child’s school, local education authority, social services, or a trusted community organization. Before relying on a program, confirm its current availability, eligibility rules, cost, contact details, and safeguarding arrangements.
