ChatGPT may not know your startup because its name is rarely present in the independent, crawlable references that language models learn from. A young company can therefore fail a direct “What is this brand?” question while still appearing when someone asks for the best tools in its category. In a 2026 test of 48 products, only four were correctly described by name without live web access, yet 28 appeared in a search-grounded category query. The practical fix is not to chase a guaranteed ranking: make your category and audience explicit in served HTML, keep that wording consistent across legitimate third-party sources, and measure name recall separately from category discovery.
Why doesn’t ChatGPT know my startup?
ChatGPT’s answer about a startup depends on which information is available to the model at that moment. A model without live search can only draw on patterns in its training data; a search-capable model can retrieve pages that describe a product even when the brand name was never learned as a distinct entity. New companies often have too little independent coverage, an unclear or generic name, or a site whose useful text appears only after JavaScript runs.
Training data contains references, not a live company directory
Brand recognition is built from repeated mentions in material such as reviews, business directories, community discussions, press coverage and other sites. A startup that has launched recently may have an excellent product but only a handful of references for a model to associate with its name. Francisco Ferreira of Tabkeel describes the mechanism this way: “ChatGPT doesn’t know your startup because name recall comes from training data, and a young product has few of the third-party mentions (G2, Crunchbase, Reddit, press) that models learn names from.”
Four forces make name recall especially fragile
- Few independent mentions: a homepage written by the company is only one source. Without reviews, directory entries, discussions or reporting, the model sees little corroboration.
- Training cutoffs: a product launched or substantially changed after a model’s cutoff may not be represented at all.
- Generic names: a word that is also a surname, noun or common phrase can collide with unrelated text, so the model cannot reliably bind it to one company.
- JavaScript-only content: if the category description is inserted in the browser after the initial page is served, crawlers may receive little readable text to index.
These are discoverability conditions, not a judgment about product quality. A correct answer can be impossible for a model that has neither the name in memory nor a retrievable page explaining what the company does.

What did the 48-startup test actually measure?
The 2026 Tabkeel experiment separated two questions that are often treated as one. The first prompt supplied the brand name to a model without live web access. The second withheld the name and asked a search-grounded model to find the best tools for the product’s function.
| Signal | Prompt style | Access condition | Observed result | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Name recall | What is [brand]? |
No live web access | 4 of 48 products correctly described (8%); 44 of 48 unknown by name | Whether the model has learned the startup as an entity |
| Category discovery | What are the best tools for [the thing this product does]? |
Search-grounded model, brand omitted | 28 of 48 ranked (58%) | Whether pages about the product are retrievable by function |
| Unknown by name, visible by function | Both tests compared | Different conditions | 24 of 48 products (50% of the full sample) | Name failure and category visibility can coexist |
| Top placement | Category query | Search-grounded | 19 products reportedly reached first place | Function-based retrieval can be strong even without name recall |
The sample came from a first-party experiment by a tool vendor, so it is narrower than a peer-reviewed benchmark. Its value is the distinction between entity memory and retrieval, not a promise that any startup will obtain a particular position.
How is name recall different from category discovery?
Name recall asks, “Does the model already associate this string with a company?” Category discovery asks, “Can a search system find pages that satisfy this need and include the company among the options?” They use different evidence and can produce opposite outcomes for the same startup.

| Brand supplied? | Yes | No |
| Most important weakness | Few mentions, cutoff date or ambiguous name | Missing, inconsistent or inaccessible category language |
| Useful outcome to record | Correct description and entity disambiguation | Appearance, rank and the reason the product was selected |
That is why an answer such as “I’m not familiar with that company” does not prove that the startup is absent from AI recommendations. It only proves that the tested model did not retrieve or remember the entity in that particular setup.
Why can a product rank by function when its name is unknown?
Category language gives a retrieval system more ways to match a page than a bare brand name does. A page that plainly says what the product automates, who it serves and which problem it solves can satisfy a functional query even if the model has never seen the brand in training.
The 48-product test reported this pattern for products including Decagon in AI customer-service automation, Lindy in AI automation platforms and Granola in AI meeting notetaking. In each case, the category query supplied the semantic context that the name-only prompt lacked. Ferreira summarized the result as: “Half the sample was invisible by name and visible by function at the same time.”

Do not read a category appearance as proof of universal awareness. The test also recorded 11 cases in which the model produced no category list at all. When there is no list, you cannot tell whether the product was judged and rejected, or whether the retrieval step failed before ranking began.
What does the independent 112-startup study add?
An arXiv preprint by Amit Prakash Sharma examined 112 Product Hunt startups across 2,240 queries. It reported a striking split: ChatGPT recognized names in 99.4% of name-oriented queries, but succeeded in only 3.32% of discovery-style queries such as “What are the best AI tools launched this year?” Perplexity’s corresponding discovery rate was 8.29%.
| Measure reported in the preprint | Result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Startups tested | 112 | A broader sample than the 48-product experiment, limited to Product Hunt launches |
| Total queries | 2,240 | Multiple queries per startup |
| ChatGPT name recognition | 99.4% | Recognition when the startup name was supplied |
| ChatGPT discovery-query success | 3.32% | Success on broad, recommendation-style queries |
| Perplexity discovery-query success | 8.29% | Higher than ChatGPT in that study’s discovery setup |
The preprint found that referring domains and cleaned community presence correlated with Perplexity visibility. Its GEO score did not correlate with discovery rates. Those are correlations, not proof that a particular directory listing, community post or optimization tactic causes a ranking. The study is also a preprint rather than a settled industry benchmark, so use it to choose what to measure, not to promise an outcome.
How do I check whether AI can find my SaaS?
Run two separate tests and keep the conditions visible in your notes. A single “Does ChatGPT know us?” prompt mixes memory, search access and wording into one uninterpretable result.
- Test entity recall. Use a model or session without live web access where possible and ask
What is [your exact startup name]?Save the complete answer, including uncertainty, mistaken identities and the date. - Test category retrieval. In a search-capable model, omit your brand and ask
What are the best tools for [your specific job to be done]?Use the wording a prospective buyer would actually type, not an internal product slogan. - Vary the category carefully. Run several close descriptions that differ by audience, workflow and industry. This shows whether visibility depends on one unusually favorable phrase.
- Record rank and evidence. Note whether the product appears, its position, the description the model gives, and which page or source supplied the information. A mention without a usable explanation may not help a buyer.
- Separate visibility from business impact. Track referral clicks, qualified inquiries and revenue independently. Neither the 48-product test nor the arXiv study establishes that a ranking produces clicks or sales.
Repeat the same prompts after substantial site or reference changes, keeping the old results so you can see whether the change affected recall, discovery or neither. Treat an empty category response as unresolved evidence, not as proof that no relevant products exist.

Put a literal category sentence in served HTML
Place a one-sentence description near the top of the HTML response, before client-side rendering. It should state the product category, the primary user and the job performed. For example:
<p>Acme is a workflow automation platform for dental practices that schedules patients and sends reminders.</p>
Ferreira’s guidance is direct: “Say what you are in a sentence a machine can file, and put it where the crawler reads first, in the served HTML, so it is there before any JavaScript runs.” The sentence should be factual and specific rather than a string of broad adjectives.
Use the same category wording across first-party pages
Keep the core description aligned on the homepage, product page, documentation, directory profiles and press materials. Small variations are natural, but switching between “AI assistant,” “workflow platform” and an unrelated invented category makes entity matching harder. Consistency also helps a reviewer or journalist describe the company accurately.

Earn legitimate independent references
Build profiles, reviews, relevant press and community participation because they give models corroborating descriptions. The independent study’s referring-domain and community correlations support measuring this footprint; they do not justify spam, fabricated reviews or mass-produced posts. Favor sources whose editorial purpose is to evaluate or explain products.
Disambiguate a generic name
If the brand is also a common word or surname, pair it with a stable descriptor in headings and references, such as “Acme, the dental-practice scheduling platform.” This gives retrieval systems an association that the bare word cannot provide.
Should I worry if ChatGPT is unknown by name?
Not automatically. If the product appears for the right category queries, a buyer can still encounter it without first knowing the brand. The urgent problem is when both tests fail, the category description is wrong, or the product is consistently confused with another entity.

|---|---|---|
| Name fails; category succeeds | Retrieval works, but entity memory is weak | Strengthen consistent third-party references and monitor name accuracy |
| Name succeeds; category fails | The brand is known, but functional language or retrieval coverage is weak | Rewrite served HTML and category pages around the buyer’s job to be done |
| Both fail | Insufficient accessible evidence or a severe ambiguity problem | Fix crawlable copy, disambiguation and legitimate reference coverage before judging demand |
| Product appears with wrong description | Sources disagree or the model merged entities | Align the canonical description and correct inaccurate public profiles |
Visibility is an intermediate signal. The available studies report recognition, appearance and rank; they do not establish a guaranteed ranking, click-through rate or revenue effect. Make those downstream measures part of your own evaluation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What is generative engine optimization (GEO) in this context?
GEO is a practical label for improving the chance that generative search systems can retrieve, interpret and cite a company for relevant questions. In this context it means clear category language, crawlable pages and credible independent references—not a secret score or a guaranteed placement.
The arXiv study’s finding that its GEO score did not correlate with discovery rates is a useful warning. A high internal optimization score cannot substitute for pages that explain the product or for independent sources that confirm the explanation. Evaluate GEO work by the two visibility tests and by business outcomes, not by a score alone.
Is OpenAI Company Knowledge the same as public ChatGPT awareness?
No. Company Knowledge is a workspace feature that uses supported connected apps and custom MCP sources to answer organization-specific questions. Availability depends on the plan, workspace settings, authorization and each user’s permissions, and the feature respects existing access controls.
That private workspace context does not make a startup universally known in public ChatGPT conversations. OpenAI states that Business, Enterprise and Edu workspace data is not used to train models by default, so treat Company Knowledge as an authorized internal retrieval path rather than a public-discoverability tactic.

| Symptom | Check | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| The homepage source contains no category sentence | View the initial served HTML, not only the rendered screen | Add a concise category-and-audience sentence before JavaScript runs |
| Different sites describe different products | Compare directory, review, press and community wording | Standardize the factual description and correct stale profiles |
| The name returns unrelated meanings | Search the name with its category and audience | Use a stable descriptor alongside the brand |
| Category queries return no list | Repeat with close functional wording and another search-capable model | Record the result as unresolved; do not infer a definitive absence |
| The product ranks but the description is inaccurate | Inspect the source passage the model used | Publish clearer first-party copy and seek corrections in authoritative references |
A sensible sequence is to fix served-HTML clarity first, align descriptions second, build legitimate references third, and then rerun both tests. That order makes it easier to attribute any change to a specific improvement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I submit my startup directly to ChatGPT so it remembers the name?
Public responses are not an editable company directory. Your practical levers are making accurate information available in crawlable pages and reputable independent references, while recognizing that training timing and retrieval access remain outside your control.
Does appearing first in an AI category list guarantee customers?
No. The documented experiments measured whether products appeared and where they ranked, not clicks, qualified leads or revenue. Connect visibility checks to your own analytics before treating a ranking as a business result.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if another company uses the same startup name?
Add a consistent functional and audience descriptor wherever the name appears, including the first sentence of the page. This gives models and readers an extra signal for separating your entity from unrelated meanings.
Will connecting private company documents make the startup publicly discoverable?
No. Workspace knowledge features answer authorized users through connected sources and permissions. They provide an internal retrieval path and do not automatically change what public ChatGPT users see.
