An SSD can start a large copy quickly and then slow down because its early speed may come from a fast write buffer or Windows memory caching, neither of which guarantees the drive can sustain that rate. Heat, the source drive, the connection, and the type of files being copied can also limit progress. The speed drop alone does not identify the cause; use the checks below to narrow it down before changing settings.

Why SSD copy speed drops

The SSD’s fast write buffer fills

Many SSDs use a faster write buffer to absorb incoming data. Samsung’s TurboWrite white paper describes how consecutive writes without idle time can fill that buffer. Afterward, the drive continues through its remaining internal storage path, and its sustained speed depends on the specific model, capacity, firmware, and workload. The drop may be abrupt or gradual.

Buffer size and post-buffer speed are not universal SSD specifications. The figures in Samsung’s older white paper apply to the products covered by that document, not to all current drives.

Windows is buffering writes

Windows can write file data to its system file cache and flush it to storage later. Microsoft explains this behavior in its file-caching documentation and guidance on flushing cached data to disk. As a result, the initial copy display may reflect data accepted into memory, followed by slower progress as cached writes reach the SSD. Timing depends on the operating system and copy method.

Sandisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 1050MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2, IP65 Water and Dust Resistance, Updated Firmware, External Solid State Drive, SDSSDE61-2T00-G25
  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

Do not treat the early displayed rate as proof of the drive’s sustained speed. Disabling Windows write caching or changing buffer-flushing policies is not a routine fix: these settings can affect reliability as well as performance, and are not established as a general cure.

The SSD is hot

Samsung says that in rare high-workload cases involving transfers of several hundred GB, performance may be suppressed to protect the SSD using Dynamic Thermal Throttling. This is a conditional explanation, not a diagnosis of every slowdown. If the speed drop coincides with an elevated drive temperature, check that model’s temperature readings and vendor guidance.

The source, connection, or file mix is limiting the copy

The destination SSD is only one part of a transfer. A slower source drive, USB link, network, host, copy utility, or background task may set the pace. One large file and many small files also create different workloads. Microsoft’s SMB transfer guidance notes that many small files can copy slowly and that an SMB transfer may slow after cache capacity is reached. That guidance concerns network copies; it does not prove the same cause for every local transfer.

How to find the cause safely

  1. Record the setup. Note the SSD model and capacity, operating system, source and destination, and whether the copy is internal, over USB, or over a network. Without these details, the cause cannot be assigned confidently.
  2. Watch when the slowdown begins. Record whether the rate drops after a repeatable amount of data or after sustained activity. Compare copying one large file with copying a folder of many small files. The pattern is a clue, not proof.
  3. Check temperature and drive health during the slowdown. Use the SSD maker’s supported utility or operating-system reporting, then compare readings with guidance for that exact model. Samsung documents thermal throttling for some heavy workloads.
  4. Check the source and connection. Confirm the source can read quickly enough and that you are using the intended port, cable, and link. For an SMB transfer, consult Microsoft’s guidance on cache behavior and small-file overhead.
  5. Check drive maintenance and operating-system status. Follow manufacturer documentation rather than applying generic registry or cache tweaks. Kingston explains that TRIM and garbage collection help SSDs manage previously used blocks; these mechanisms are relevant to performance maintenance, but there is no universal setting change that fixes every slowdown.
  6. Act on a critical storage warning first. If Windows reports a critical warning, back up important data and contact support, as Microsoft advises.

Match the fix to the cause

If the write buffer is probably filling

If the drive maker describes background buffer management, allow idle time between sustained writes. For frequent large transfers, plan around the drive’s documented sustained performance rather than its peak sequential-write figure. When comparing replacement drives for this workload, look for sustained-write testing on the same capacity and a comparable workload; peak figures alone do not show performance throughout a very large copy. The cited sources do not establish a ranking of current models.

SSK Portable SSD 500GB External Solid State Hard Drive USB C Up to 1050MB/s
  • Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
  • 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
  • Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
  • USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
  • Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity

If temperature is the issue

After confirming elevated temperature, improve airflow or consider a compatible M.2 NVMe SSD heatsink if the drive is an M.2 model. Check physical clearance and the SSD maker’s advice first. A heatsink may help some installations, but it will not resolve a filled write buffer, a slow source, or every thermal problem.

If many small files or a network path are involved

Try a large-file copy as a comparison, inspect the source and network path, and follow documentation for the relevant operating system and transfer method. Microsoft’s small-file and cache observations apply specifically to SMB transfers, not automatically to local copies.
