An iPhone update that seems stuck may be downloading slowly, unable to reach Apple’s update server, short on storage, or already preparing or installing rather than downloading. Check the exact status and alert first, then work through the matching fix: improve the Wi-Fi connection, check compatibility and storage, try another network, or delete and download the update again. If wireless updating still fails, back up the iPhone and use a trusted computer.
First, check which update stage the iPhone is showing
Look at the wording on the Software Update screen. Apple describes updating as separate stages: detecting an update, downloading and preparing it, and installing it. A phone that has moved on to preparing or installing is not necessarily still downloading. Identify the displayed stage and any alert before choosing a fix; do not interrupt an active installation just because it appears to be taking a while. If the screen still says it is downloading and there is no connection alert, the download may simply be slow. Apple says the time depends on the update’s size and internet speed, and does not give a universal cutoff for deciding that a download is stuck. Connect to Wi-Fi and avoid downloading other content at the same time. You can continue using the iPhone while the file downloads. Check that the iPhone can install the update
Confirm the model is supported
Not every iPhone supports every major iOS release. Check the exact model in Settings and compare it with Apple’s compatibility information for the iOS version being offered. If the model is not eligible, the update cannot be installed on that phone.

Review available storage
Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. If space is tight, Apple says the iPhone may temporarily remove app data to make room without deleting personal information. You can also offload unused apps or remove apps manually. Apple does not specify one free-storage figure that applies to every update, so use the storage screen and any on-device message rather than relying on a universal gigabyte target. Fix a network or update-server problem
If the iPhone shows an alert that it cannot connect to the internet or update server, retry on the current network. If the alert continues, connect to another usable network and try again. A VPN or proxy connection might prevent the iPhone from contacting Apple’s update servers; if you use one, check whether it is affecting the connection. Apple’s update troubleshooting guidance and Apple’s wireless update guidance identify network, VPN, and proxy issues as possible causes.

Delete the downloaded update and download it again
If the download continues to fail after you have checked the connection and tried another network, remove the update file and fetch it again:
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Find the iOS update in the storage list, tap it, and choose the option to delete it.
- Return to Settings > General > Software Update and download the update again.
Labels and menu wording can vary by iOS version. Use the labels shown on your iPhone. Apple’s update troubleshooting guidance documents the delete-and-redownload steps.

Use a Mac or PC if wireless updating still fails
Back up the iPhone before updating through a computer. For a trusted Mac running macOS Catalina or later, connect the iPhone, select it in Finder, open General, choose Check for Update, then select Download and Update. On macOS Mojave or earlier, Apple directs users to iTunes. Apple’s Finder update instructions cover the computer steps, and Apple’s update guidance describes computer updating as an option when wireless updating is unavailable or unsuccessful.

When to get further help
If a computer does not recognize the iPhone, or the phone appears stuck during installation, use Apple’s guidance for computer-update alerts and recovery mode rather than disconnecting or forcing a restart based only on elapsed time. The correct next step depends on the alert and the stage shown on the device. Apple’s update troubleshooting page links to help for those cases.
