The apparent capability gap was not a capability gap. In the reported 2026 comparison, a parent coding agent launched child agents through a custom stdio MCP server, but the children could not authenticate because the API key never reached the server in the isolated worktree run. The measurement then recorded a normal-looking orchestration result even though no child completed.
Once the key was passed explicitly in the MCP configuration, a run with instruction files completed all launched children and all tasks passed. That corrected the credential defect, but it did not prove a stable ranking between coding agents: the follow-up measurements were limited, and another run still had failures attributed to causes other than the key.
What actually failed in the coding-agent comparison?
The failure occurred in the plumbing around the agents, not in the model’s ability to solve the tasks. OpenHands CLI was used as the parent process. It called a custom server over stdio MCP, and that server launched child coding agents. Those children needed an API key to authenticate.

The setup assumed that the key would arrive through ordinary environment inheritance or through a .env file at the repository root. In the run that was later judged invalid, the parent used an isolated Git worktree. That worktree did not provide the root-level file the server expected, and the measurement script had not placed the key explicitly in the MCP server configuration. Child authentication therefore failed before the coding tasks could run.

The reporting layer hid the problem. A run-record file existed with a status of ok, and the parent script recorded a successful MCP call even when zero children had completed. The task tests themselves passed independently, so their scores did not expose the missing-child condition. For about a day, the invalid run was treated as evidence about comparative agent capability.
Matsumoto’s 2026 incident account says its conclusions were based on run records from a research repository intended for public release and on public source code checked at the time. The repository contents and exact software revisions were not independently verifiable from the available account, so the figures below describe that report rather than a universal benchmark.
How did the API key get lost?
Environment inheritance is not a contract
A child process can inherit variables from its parent, but the path from a coding-agent host to an MCP server and then to a second-generation child is an implementation detail. Different hosts can construct the server environment differently, filter variables, or use different configuration schemas. The incident report specifically warns that behavior differed among the three clients it checked; a variable that works in one host must not be assumed to work in another version.
An isolated worktree changes what files exist
A worktree is a separate checkout location. A loader that searches for .env relative to the current repository, process working directory, or project root may find a file in the main checkout but not in the worktree. The report notes that an earlier OpenHands run had one completed child and may have read .env from the main working directory, but that explanation was explicitly unconfirmed. It is not safe to use that run as proof that the original configuration was reliable.

Configuration names are client-specific
The repair used explicit configuration rather than relying on discovery. For Qwen Code and OpenHands CLI, the relevant MCP configuration field was reported as env. For OpenCode, the article says the field is environment. These names are not interchangeable instructions for every release; verify the schema and version of the host you are running.
What did the corrected measurements show?
After the key was supplied explicitly, the report described two additional OpenHands CLI measurements. They are useful diagnostic observations, not a statistically reliable completion rate or a final ranking.
| Condition | Children launched | Children completed | Tasks passed | Elapsed time | Limit and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Instruction files present | 8 | 8 | 8 of 8 | 556.1 seconds | Within the 900-second limit; one reported run |
| Instruction files absent | 16 across three run records | 1 | 8 of 8 | 761.1 seconds | Within the 900-second limit; 15 incomplete children were attributed to causes other than the API key |
The second condition is especially important to interpret correctly. The key fix removed the authentication defect, but it did not explain or resolve the other 15 incomplete children. The report does not establish those causes. The measurements therefore cannot support a claim that the key change made the overall system reliable, nor that instruction files alone guarantee completion.

- Identify the process that actually needs the key. In this architecture, the custom stdio MCP server needed to authenticate before it could launch children. Giving a key only to the parent agent is insufficient if the server starts with a filtered environment.
- Use the host’s documented MCP environment field. The incident account reports
envfor Qwen Code and OpenHands CLI, andenvironmentfor OpenCode. Put the required variable in that field rather than assuming inherited shell state will survive every process boundary. - Check the variable name as well as its value. A correctly supplied secret under the wrong name is indistinguishable from a missing secret to the child. Add a unit test for each supported client configuration; the report says its repair included tests that checked the configured environment-variable names.
- Fail before spawning children when the key is absent. The follow-up change described in the account makes a missing required key stop the MCP call before any child launch and marks the overall run as failed. This turns an authentication defect into an immediate, visible setup error.
- Limit the distribution scope. Configure the key only for the MCP server that needs it, rather than writing it into every agent’s environment. Narrow scope reduces accidental exposure and makes audits easier.
- Prefer a secure credential store or environment variable. Meta’s official Model API guidance recommends keeping keys out of committed configuration files and using a referenced credential form when both inline and referenced forms are supported. That guidance is general platform practice, not evidence that every coding-agent client implements credential references identically.
How can you detect a false-success orchestration run?
Do not treat a parent call or a run-record status as proof that child work completed. Make completion evidence part of the pass condition.
- Record the number of children requested, launched, authenticated, completed, failed, and timed out.
- Require the completed-child count to meet the experiment’s declared threshold before calculating a capability score.
- Make a missing required credential fail the run, not merely produce a warning in a child log.
- Keep orchestration status separate from task-test status. A test can pass against an existing artifact while every newly launched child has failed.
- Inspect each run record for child-level errors and exit states instead of accepting
status: okas a universal success signal. - Use a narrow diagnostic flag to identify measurement-side defects, as the account recommends, so a broken harness is not mixed with an agent’s task-solving result.
This separation also improves incident response. If authentication fails, the record should say that the measurement was invalid; if a child authenticates but crashes later, that should remain a distinct failure category.
What makes a comparison between coding-agent hosts fair?
Hold the task conditions constant, then compare host behavior that can alter whether the work is even executed. The incident shows why a benchmark needs an orchestration specification in addition to a task set.
| Comparison axis | What to hold or verify |
|---|---|
| Model and tasks | Use the same model and the same eight-task set when claiming a direct comparison. |
| Time budget | Apply the same 900-second limit and report elapsed time with the condition that produced it. |
| Environment forwarding | Verify whether the parent forwards variables to a stdio MCP server and whether the server forwards what children require. |
| Configuration schema | Check the client’s actual field name, such as env or environment, instead of assuming a shared format. |
| Missing-credential behavior | Confirm that a missing key prevents child launch and marks the run failed. |
| Run accounting | Report child completion counts separately from the parent MCP call and record status. |
| Instruction files | Declare whether agent instruction files are present, because their presence changed the reported follow-up condition. |
| Repetition | Repeat conditions sufficiently to estimate variability; two post-fix observations are not enough to establish a repeatable rate. |
The initial comparison reportedly used the same model and eight tasks, but its zero-completion OpenHands runs were invalidated by credential propagation. A fair rerun must first prove that every host can authenticate and that the harness counts child completion correctly.

What security controls should surround an explicit MCP key?
Explicit passing fixes reliability but creates a new exposure point: the secret now appears in configuration data unless handled carefully.
- Keep values out of records. The account describes masking strings that resemble API keys in run records and logs.
- Block accidental commits. A pre-commit check was added to reject a staged key value before it enters source control.
- Restrict configuration scope. Write the key only to the MCP server that requires it, not to unrelated parent or child processes.
- Use references where supported. A credential reference can avoid embedding the secret directly in a checked-in configuration, while still allowing the client to resolve it at runtime.
- Test redaction. Include a deliberately secret-shaped test value and confirm that logs, run records, and error reports contain a masked form.
- Rotate after exposure. If a real key was written to a repository, artifact, or unredacted record, treat it as compromised and replace it through the issuing service.
What can this incident prove—and what can it not prove?
It proves that benchmark validity depends on credential and process-boundary checks. A parent that reports success while launching no authenticated children can create a convincing but meaningless capability result. It also demonstrates that isolated worktrees and client-specific MCP schemas are experimental variables, not invisible implementation details.
It does not prove that one coding-agent host is inherently better than another, that instruction files universally improve completion, or that the API-key change solved all reliability problems. The post-fix account still reports incomplete children for other, unspecified reasons, and the observations are too limited to establish a stable comparative ranking.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a .env file ever be used safely with an MCP server?
It can work when the process has a defined working directory, the loader searches the intended path, and the file is protected from source control. Treat it as an explicit deployment dependency and test it in the same worktree and launch mode used by the benchmark, rather than assuming the main checkout’s file will be visible.

Should the API key be written directly into the MCP configuration?
Only when the client offers no safer reference mechanism and the file is protected. A secure credential store, environment variable, or supported credential reference keeps the value out of committed configuration; whichever method you choose, verify that the MCP server receives the expected variable at startup.
What evidence should a benchmark archive for each child?
Archive a redacted launch record containing the client version, configuration schema, worktree path, authentication result, start and end states, exit reason, and task-test result. Those fields let a reviewer distinguish a child that never authenticated from one that authenticated and later failed.
How should a team report a failed measurement to readers?
Label it invalid when a required setup condition was missing, explain the exact boundary where the failure occurred, and keep it out of capability scores. Publish corrected observations separately with their run conditions and avoid turning a small number of reruns into a general ranking.
