The $0 was not a measured price. The AI coding cost measurement was killed by a 30,000-millisecond caller timeout before it finished, so the run produced no measurement record. The empty result was later rendered as zero in a calibration field and an empty cost ledger, while metrics correctly classified the ledger as no_data. In Yusuke Shiki’s report, the same agent-cost session completed successfully in 36.454 seconds when run directly; the pre-fix spec-lane adapter stopped it at 30.019 seconds. A later fix raised the default timeout to 180 seconds and added an explicit override. You should therefore treat this incident as a failed measurement, not proof that the coding task cost nothing.

What actually happened when the AI coding cost showed $0?

The apparent zero came from a missing observation, not from a transaction priced at zero dollars. The adapter gave the measurement process only 30,000 milliseconds. Because the command needed longer than that, the adapter terminated it before a protocol payload could be parsed and before a cost-ledger entry could be written.

Yusuke Shiki’s report records three relevant runs:

Run Result Wall time Evidence state
Direct agent-cost Exit 0; JSON parsed; protocol measure/v1 36.454 seconds Completed measurement
Pre-fix adapter Timeout; TelemetryImportFailed; generic “Command failed” message 30.019 seconds No measurement record
Post-fix adapter Successful completion 35.410 seconds Completed measurement

The direct run taking 36.454 seconds is the decisive clue: a 30-second ceiling can stop a valid measurement even when the underlying command works. The 30.019-second failure is consistent with a caller-side timeout, not with a command that naturally computes a $0 result.

Why does an empty result become “$0”?

A timeout can leave default values in memory even though no measured value exists. In a controlled short-timeout reproduction, the system displayed CalibrationObservation: 0 and cost_ledger: 0, but it did not produce JSON containing "cost_usd": 0. Those are different states: a zero-valued field can be a placeholder, whereas a cost record with cost_usd is an actual observation.

When emit-metrics was run against that empty ledger, it reported built 0 record(s), coverage.status=no_data. The no_data status means that no measured record exists. It does not assert that a measured record had a price of zero.

Shiki summarized the distinction as “Measurement failed != $0” and “Failing to measure something is not the same as measuring it as zero.” Use that distinction in dashboards, scripts and incident reports. A missing row should not be converted into a numeric zero merely to make a chart render.

How can a 30-second timeout interrupt a command that normally succeeds?

The pre-fix adapter set its caller budget with this.timeoutMs = opts.timeoutMs ?? 30_000;. That value governed how long the adapter waited, not how long agent-cost was guaranteed to run. A process that needs 35 to 39 seconds can therefore be healthy while still being killed by the wrapper.

What the timing shows

  • The direct command completed in 36.454 seconds, proving the workload can exceed 30 seconds while returning valid JSON.
  • The adapter stopped waiting at 30.019 seconds, just beyond its 30,000-millisecond limit.
  • The post-fix adapter completed in 35.410 seconds, which is close to the direct measurement and confirms that the timeout, rather than a protocol or parser defect, was the immediate blocker.

Timeouts are especially easy to trigger in shared CI workers, cold processes, busy disks or sessions with more token accounting. A timeout value should include headroom above the observed completion time, not match the fastest run.

How do I increase the agent-cost timeout?

PR #43 changed the default timeout to 180,000 milliseconds (180 seconds) and added an explicit --agent-cost-timeout-ms <n> option. The option is available on calibrate, emit-metrics, next and usage-import.

  1. Run the command you need with the timeout option, for example calibrate --agent-cost-timeout-ms 180000. Apply the same option to emit-metrics, next or usage-import when those commands invoke the measurement path.
  2. Keep the value in the accepted range: 1 millisecond through 3,600,000 milliseconds (one hour).
  3. For a diagnostic test, choose a deliberately short value such as --agent-cost-timeout-ms 200. The fixed implementation reports timed out after 200 ms (killed with SIGTERM), making the cause visible instead of returning only “Command failed.”
  4. After a normal run, inspect the measurement state and the persisted lane-scoped ledger. Do not infer success from a numeric field alone.

The 180-second default is a safety margin, not a guarantee that every run will finish within that period. The author also cautions that SIGTERM does not guarantee an immediate child-process exit, so a timeout message can appear before the operating-system process tree has fully disappeared.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What evidence proves that the timeout fix worked?

With the v0.10.1 CLI and the 180-second default, a reproduced historical session took 38.01 seconds, created CalibrationObservation: 1, wrote a lane-scoped cost ledger and reached emit-metrics: coverage.status=complete. A separate historical pull-request record describes roughly 39 seconds, but its raw log is unavailable; the independently reproduced 38.01-second run is stronger evidence.

This result establishes that the process can finish, return a protocol payload and persist evidence under the longer budget. It does not establish that the dollar estimate is priced correctly or that tokens were attributed to the intended task. Those are separate validation questions.

Does a completed measurement prove the cost estimate is accurate?

No. Completion proves the mechanics of measurement and persistence, not the economics. The historical and reproduced runs had different token counts, estimated costs and agent-cost versions, and the author did not investigate why they differed.

Validate the following independently:

  • Pricing catalog: confirm that the model and rate data used by the estimator match the period and account being analyzed.
  • Token accounting: compare reported input and output tokens with the session’s source logs, including retries and tool calls if those are billable in your setup.
  • Task attribution: verify that the lane or session identifier points to the intended coding task rather than a neighboring run.
  • Persistence: check that a concrete measurement record and ledger entry exist, not merely that a command returned.

A successful protocol response is necessary for a trustworthy number, but it is not sufficient. Treat “measurement completed” and “cost is correct” as separate assertions in reviews and automation.

Can exit code 0 prove that usage import worked?

No. Exit status, measurement state and persisted evidence can disagree. The documented behavior is different for the two relevant commands:

Command Failure behavior What to inspect
calibrate Exits 2 on measurement failure Exit status plus the observation and ledger
usage-import Can record measurement-incomplete and matched: false, write no ledger entry, and still exit 0 Import state, match result and ledger presence

For automation, make the success condition compound: require the expected measurement state, a matching record and a persisted ledger entry. A zero exit code should only mean that the command itself handled its control flow without an unhandled process error.

How should I diagnose a future “$0” result?

Start by classifying the state before looking at the number. The following sequence prevents an empty run from being mistaken for a free one.

  1. Check the raw measurement payload. Look for a real JSON field such as cost_usd, the measure/v1 protocol marker and the expected token fields. If no payload exists, there is no measured price.
  2. Read the timeout and process diagnostics. A message such as timed out after … (killed with SIGTERM) identifies a wrapper deadline. A generic “Command failed” from the pre-fix adapter does not explain the cause by itself.
  3. Inspect the observation count. CalibrationObservation: 0 means no observation was created in the reproduced failure case; it is not a cost value.
  4. Inspect ledger coverage. coverage.status=no_data means the metrics builder found zero records. It should not be transformed into cost_usd: 0.
  5. Check the lane or task match. For imports, confirm that the result is not matched: false and that a ledger entry was actually written.
  6. Re-run with headroom. Use the 180-second default or an explicit value appropriate for your workload, then compare elapsed time with the resulting evidence.

What changed between the pre-fix and fixed implementations?

The important changes are operational rather than cosmetic. They increase the time budget, expose a per-command override and make timeout failures more diagnosable.

The fix addresses the false-zero pathway, but it does not automatically repair historical records created before the change. Those records need to be re-measured if an actual cost is required.

Why do version labels appear inconsistent?

Issue #42 identifies the historical environment as lane 0.9.1, cca0338 on main. The report says that cca0338... is the peeled commit for the v0.10.0 tag and that package metadata at that revision reports 0.10.0, while the historical executable reported 0.9.1. The discrepancy remains unresolved.

Record the executable version, commit, lane and task identifier with every measurement. Without that metadata, two runs can look comparable while using different code or pricing behavior. Version capture is part of attribution, not an optional diagnostic extra.

What is the practical answer to “Why did my AI coding cost show $0?”

In this incident, the measurement exceeded the adapter’s 30-second budget and was terminated before it could produce evidence. The apparent $0 was therefore a data-state error. Increase the timeout, rerun the measurement, verify a real protocol payload and ledger entry, then validate pricing and task attribution separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a genuinely free coding session still report zero?

Yes, but a genuine zero must come from a completed record whose payload explicitly contains a zero cost under the applicable pricing rules. An empty ledger or a missing payload cannot distinguish a free session from a failed measurement.

What timeout should I use in continuous integration?

Start with the 180-second default and measure your own slowest normal runs, including cold starts and busy workers. Set a larger explicit value when the workload approaches that ceiling, while retaining a separate job-level limit so a hung process cannot run forever.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I repair historical runs that were stopped at 30 seconds?

Treat them as unmeasured and rerun the original session or an equivalent replay with the fixed CLI. Do not backfill a dollar value from the placeholder zero, because the missing payload contains no token or pricing evidence.

Why might two successful runs have different estimated costs?

Different token counts, pricing data, task boundaries or agent-cost versions can change the estimate even when both commands exit successfully. Compare the raw payloads and captured versions before concluding that one result is wrong.
