AI can make an individual task faster without lifting a company’s earnings immediately. A faster draft, code suggestion or search result becomes a financial gain only when many employees adopt it, connected workflows are redesigned, customers buy the additional output or costs actually fall, and accounting measures capture the improvement. Training, data preparation, software, review and management changes can absorb early savings. Some quality gains are difficult to measure, while benefits may flow to customers or workers instead of appearing as profit.
That is why apparently conflicting evidence can all be valid: a controlled task study, a firm-level productivity estimate, a national statistic and a modeled ten-year forecast measure different things. The evidence supports neither “AI has already transformed every income statement” nor “AI has no value.” It shows a conditional path from task improvement to firm productivity and, only sometimes, to earnings.
What is the difference between an AI task gain, productivity and earnings?
A task gain is a change in the time or effort needed for one activity. Productivity is output relative to inputs across a worker, team, firm or economy. Earnings are an accounting result that remains after revenue, labor, technology, financing and other expenses are counted. These measures are related, but none can stand in for the others.
If an assistant cuts the minutes required to prepare a report, the company has not automatically produced more saleable reports. The saved time may be used for checking errors, waiting for approval, serving existing customers better or doing work for which there is no immediate demand. Labour productivity can rise without higher earnings if prices fall, employees receive the benefit, or implementation costs are still being paid.

Multifactor, or total-factor, productivity measures output not explained by measured inputs such as labor and capital. A firm-level productivity result therefore is not a profit study. The sources used here primarily examine adoption, productivity and measurement; they do not establish a universal causal path from generative AI to company earnings.
Why doesn’t a successful AI pilot scale across the whole company?
Adoption is uneven. A strong result in one pilot can coexist with limited use elsewhere, especially when data, permissions, security or skills differ between departments.
Large and digitally advanced firms often move first
The International Labour Organization’s 6 May 2026 research brief says emerging evidence shows task-level productivity gains of roughly 10% to 70%, with the strongest effects for less-experienced workers and well-defined, text-intensive tasks. The brief also says firm-level evidence is more mixed and that adoption remains uneven, with many businesses reporting little measurable impact beyond pilots. Read the range as a summary of selected task evidence, not as a forecast of earnings for every employee or industry. ILO, 2026

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The OECD’s 2026 Compendium similarly identifies uneven adoption across industries and firms as part of the aggregate disconnect. An enterprise may have an impressive coding or service experiment while procurement, legal review, sales, operations and support continue using older processes. The company-wide average then reflects both the improved work and the untouched work.
Connected work can dilute a local speed-up
Most business processes are chains. A model can accelerate drafting while approval queues, customer demand, data access, compliance checks, integration work or downstream capacity remain unchanged. The IMF explains that AI changes interdependent tasks and workflows, so system productivity depends on connected processes rather than one assisted activity. A faster first step does not guarantee faster completion of the entire chain. IMF, 2026
What complementary investment comes before an AI payoff?
AI usually needs an operating environment. Usable data, software integration, training, redesigned workflows, new skills, governance and management attention all consume resources before a durable benefit appears.
The productivity J-curve
Economists describe this pattern as a productivity J-curve: measured performance can be flat or worse during an investment and adjustment period, then improve after complementary intangible assets are in place. The OECD discusses under-recorded intangible investment and this J-curve mechanism; it is an interpretation of how gains may emerge, not a guaranteed timetable for any particular firm. Costs can include cleaning proprietary data, connecting systems, defining approval rules, teaching staff to verify outputs, paying for inference and storage, and redesigning incentives. Employees may initially spend more time checking a system than they previously spent doing the task manually. Until the new process stabilizes, the income statement records these expenses even if future capacity is higher.
Organization capital can take time to accumulate
A working paper by Tania Babina, Alex X. He and Renhao Jiang reports that AI-skilled employment investment is associated with productivity growth in recent years through organization capital—firm-specific knowledge accumulated through learning by doing. The paper reports no such association over the prior decade. That finding depends on the paper’s measure and sample and is an association, not proof that AI causes earnings growth. NBER Working Paper 35684, 2026
Can a company become more productive without becoming more profitable?
Yes. Productivity improves the relationship between output and inputs; profitability depends on prices, demand, costs and how the resulting value is distributed.
More output may not be saleable
If AI lets a team produce more proposals but the sales pipeline, customer budget or production capacity is fixed, additional work may not create revenue. A company can instead use the capacity for shorter waits, richer service or quality improvements that protect retention without raising this quarter’s sales.
Prices and bargaining determine who gets the benefit
Competition can pass efficiency gains to customers through lower prices. Employers may share gains through wages, hiring or reduced workload. Suppliers can capture value through software fees, cloud capacity or data services. These are plausible accounting channels for an earnings gap, but the reviewed sources do not quantify their relative contribution across firms.
New expenses can offset gross savings
Ongoing model usage, integration, cybersecurity, error correction, human review and compliance can reduce net savings. A workflow that saves labor time but adds expensive review may improve service quality while leaving operating income unchanged.
How much of the apparent AI effect is hidden by measurement?
Standard productivity statistics do not observe every input or every quality change. The OECD notes that training, software and process redesign are intangible investments that are imperfectly captured in firm balance sheets and national accounts. During a build-out, measured inputs can rise before the eventual output benefit is recorded. OECD Compendium of Productivity Indicators 2026

Services can improve without a larger measured quantity
The IMF’s 2026 analysis says AI may improve service quality, scope or effectiveness without changing measured output. Some nonmarket services use a sum-of-costs approach that ties measured output to inputs. In market services, price indexes may understate quality improvements when they do not adjust adequately. The IMF’s “true output” concept is a conceptual benchmark, not a directly observed statistic, so it should not be treated as a measured AI gain. IMF, 2026

This measurement issue cuts both ways. It can hide a real quality improvement, but it can also make a weakly controlled claim look impressive if output quality, rework and total input are not counted.
What do the latest productivity figures actually show?
The figures below answer different questions. They should not be combined into a single “AI earnings increase.”
| Source and scope | Reported result | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| ILO research brief, 6 May 2026 | 10%–70% task-level productivity gains in emerging evidence | Selected tasks, strongest for less-experienced workers and well-defined, text-intensive work |
| OECD Compendium, 2026 | Labour productivity grew 1.2% in 2024, versus 0.6% in 2023 | Overall productivity; OECD says any emerging AI contribution is tentative and not conclusive |
| European Investment Bank study, released 15 January 2026 | AI adoption was associated with a 4% higher level of labour productivity | Matched data for more than 12,000 non-financial firms in the EU and United States; gains attributed to capital deepening and concentrated in medium and large firms |
| OECD model, 2024 | 0.25–0.6 percentage points of annual aggregate total-factor productivity growth and 0.4–0.9 percentage points of annual labour-productivity growth over a ten-year horizon | Model-based projections, dependent on assumptions about adoption and complementary investment |
| Acemoglu estimate reported by the IMF, 2026 | At most a 0.66% total-factor productivity increase over ten years | Model estimate under stated assumptions, not an observed company result |
| OECD range reported by the IMF, 2026 | 0.2–1.3 percentage points added to annual G7 labour-productivity growth over the next decade | Modeled range that varies with adoption and complementary investment |
The EIB result is a firm-level association for a defined sample, not a guaranteed return and not an earnings increase. The OECD and Acemoglu numbers are projections with different outcomes, horizons and assumptions. A national productivity statistic is not a direct estimate of AI’s causal effect.
Why do studies reach apparently conflicting conclusions?
Many disagreements disappear when you compare the level, outcome, scope, inputs, time horizon, method and distribution of value.
- Level: task, worker, team, company, sector or economy.
- Outcome: minutes saved, labour productivity, multifactor productivity, revenue, margin or earnings.
- Scope: a controlled pilot, broad deployment, particular industries or selected firm sizes.
- Inputs: whether training, software, data, capital, review and implementation are counted.
- Time: immediate performance, a transition period or a longer-run estimate. The reviewed evidence does not establish a universal earnings lag.
- Method: task experiment, matched firm data, survey, accounting measure or model-based projection.
- Distribution: whether gains accrue to the firm, employees, customers or suppliers.
The 2017 NBER working paper by Erik Brynjolfsson, Daniel Rock and Chad Syverson framed the modern productivity paradox as a clash between expectations and statistics. It lists “false hopes, mismeasurement, redistribution, and implementation lags” as possible explanations and argues that implementation lags were likely the largest contributor in its analysis. That is a scholarly interpretation from a working paper, not a settled rule for every AI deployment. NBER Working Paper 24001
The authors’ discussion echoes Robert Solow’s 1987 observation, quoted by the OECD: “You can see the computer age everywhere but in the productivity statistics.” Solow was discussing computers, not making a statement about generative AI, so the line is historical context rather than evidence about current earnings. How should a company test whether AI is improving earnings?
Track the complete workflow and financial outcome, not only the time spent on a single task.
- Define the economic outcome. Choose a measurable target such as completed orders, error-adjusted cases, revenue per employee, contribution margin or cycle time with quality held constant.
- Measure the baseline. Record labor, software, data, review, rework, support and capital costs before deployment. Include the volume and quality of completed work.
- Map the full process. Identify approvals, handoffs, customer demand, system integrations and compliance checks that could become bottlenecks after one task accelerates.
- Run a comparable rollout. Compare teams, time periods or use cases with similar workloads. Separate assisted work from unrelated changes in staffing, prices, demand and process.
- Count complementary investment. Attribute training hours, implementation labor, governance, infrastructure, model usage and human verification to the initiative.
- Check distribution. Determine whether the benefit appears as more output, lower prices, higher wages, better retention or supplier revenue rather than immediate operating profit.
- Reassess over time. Distinguish transition costs from recurring economics. Do not assume a universal schedule; the evidence supports possible delays, not a fixed payback date.
What should executives and investors conclude?
AI productivity gains are real in some tasks and settings, but the earnings line is a higher bar. Broad adoption, redesigned complementary work, sufficient demand, reliable quality and favorable value capture must occur together. A company can therefore report impressive local efficiency while aggregate earnings remain unchanged, especially during investment and learning.

Frequently asked questions
Does a 70% AI productivity gain mean a company can cut 70% of its staff?
No. The ILO’s 10%–70% range describes emerging task-level evidence, not a headcount forecast. Demand, quality control, connected tasks, legal obligations and how the freed capacity is used determine staffing effects.
Why might revenue rise while earnings stay flat after AI adoption?
Revenue can be accompanied by higher model, integration, review, support and training costs. Price competition or investment in additional capacity can also absorb the incremental sales before profit improves.
Are the OECD’s AI productivity numbers forecasts or historical measurements?
The 2024 OECD figures are model-based ten-year estimates built from assumptions about adoption and complementary investment. The 2026 Compendium’s 1.2% and 0.6% figures are observed aggregate labour-productivity growth rates, with no conclusive attribution to AI.
