Start by connecting your phone directly to the car with a data-capable USB cable. A wireless adapter usually depends on the vehicle already supporting wired CarPlay or Android Auto; if direct wired projection fails, the adapter is unlikely to fix it. If wired projection works, check that the adapter is in the correct USB data port, then rebuild its Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connection.
First, check whether the car and phone support the adapter
Wireless adapters do not add CarPlay or Android Auto to every vehicle. The car’s exact year, model and infotainment system must support the relevant wired projection system, and the adapter must support that vehicle and phone platform. A USB socket alone does not establish compatibility: some ports provide power or charging but no projection data.
Connect the phone directly to the vehicle using a known data-capable cable. If wired projection does not start, troubleshoot the wired connection and vehicle compatibility before trying the adapter. Google notes that Android Auto is not available in every vehicle with a USB port; Motorola specifies factory-supplied wired Android Auto as a prerequisite for its MA1, with compatibility dependent on the automaker’s implementation. Check the [Android Auto compatibility and setup guidance] and the adapter maker’s compatibility information.
Check the USB port and data connection
Plug the adapter into the port designated for wired CarPlay, Android Auto or data in the vehicle manual. If more than one port is available, use the one that works when you connect the phone directly. An adapter that lights up may be receiving power without receiving the data connection it needs.

For direct wired troubleshooting, Google recommends a high-quality USB cable shorter than one metre, with no hub or extension. Apple recommends trying another cable and USB port when wired CarPlay is the problem. These cable checks apply to the wired data path; they do not mean every wireless adapter requires a separate cable between the phone and car.
Pair the phone and adapter again
Bluetooth pairing and the launch of CarPlay or Android Auto are separate stages. Follow the adapter maker’s first-time setup instructions and accept the prompts on both the phone and the vehicle display. If the phone is paired but projection does not appear, look for the CarPlay or Android Auto icon on the infotainment screen and select it.

For Android Auto
During initial wireless setup, turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services. Google says the first wireless connection pairs over Bluetooth; keep the car in Park and the infotainment system on while following the screen instructions. See [Google’s Android Auto setup instructions].
For wireless CarPlay
Make sure Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are on, and that Auto-Join is enabled for the CarPlay network. Siri must be enabled, and CarPlay must not be blocked by Screen Time restrictions. If it does not open automatically after pairing, select CarPlay on the vehicle display. Apple’s [CarPlay troubleshooting guide] includes these checks.

Remove stale pairings
If the phone or adapter has been used with another car or dongle, remove the old relationship on the phone and, where appropriate, delete the phone from the vehicle’s paired-device list. On iPhone, go to Settings > General > CarPlay, select the car, then tap Forget This Car. Android menus vary by phone and OS version; use Android Auto’s connected-car settings to forget previously connected cars, then follow the adapter maker’s pairing order.
If the adapter appears on the car screen but the phone cannot pair, remove the old pairing, connect to the adapter’s Bluetooth name as instructed by its maker, allow requested permissions, and wait for initialization. Timing is model-specific: Portronics says initial setup for its Tune Lite can take about 2–3 minutes, which is not a universal wait time.

Restart the phone and infotainment system
Restart the phone and the car’s infotainment system, then try the connection again. Google advises checking that Android Auto is enabled in the vehicle system and restarting that system. Apple also recommends restarting the iPhone and car. If the problem involves an aftermarket receiver, check its manufacturer’s site for firmware updates.
Use only the reset and update instructions for the exact adapter model. For example, Motorola MA1 has a model-specific button and LED reset sequence; those instructions should not be applied to other adapters. Avoid a factory reset or firmware change unless the vehicle or adapter maker’s guidance calls for it.

Identify the failure before contacting support
Note the stage where the connection stops. That detail helps distinguish a power or USB-port issue from a phone pairing or projection-launch problem.
- No power: check the USB port and adapter, and consult the vehicle manual for the correct port.
- Adapter has power but does not appear on the car display: test the port that supports direct wired projection and confirm the car’s compatibility.
- Phone cannot find or pair with the adapter: check Bluetooth, remove stale pairings, and follow the adapter’s pairing instructions.
- Bluetooth pairs but projection does not launch: check Wi-Fi and platform-specific settings, accept display prompts, and select the projection icon if needed.
- Connection starts and drops: restart the phone and infotainment system; if direct wired operation also fails, investigate its cable and USB data path.
When asking for help, provide the car and receiver models, phone model and OS version, adapter model, adapter LED state, USB port tested, and whether direct wired projection works. Contact the vehicle maker for compatibility, USB-port or infotainment faults; contact the adapter maker for its pairing, reset and firmware instructions. Google likewise directs users to the vehicle manufacturer when Android Auto connection problems persist.
If you are choosing whether to keep using a cable
Do not assume an adapter will make an incompatible vehicle work or that every adapter supports both platforms. Before buying or continuing to troubleshoot one, verify these points:
