Product mix and currency translation can also lift reported revenue. So sales growth alone does not show that consumers bought more product.
Sales and volume measure different things
Net sales measure revenue; unit volume measures a physical quantity. As a simplified model, revenue depends on the number of units sold multiplied by the realized value per unit. In actual company reporting, net sales can also reflect currency translation and changes in the business portfolio.
Companies often report “price/mix” as a combined contribution. Price realization captures changes in the amount received, while mix reflects which products, packages, customers, or channels make up sales. A shift toward higher-value items can raise average revenue even if the company does not increase prices on every product. When a filing combines price and mix, it does not establish how much of the contribution came from price alone.
How reported sales can rise while volume falls
Price realization and mix can offset fewer units
If average realized revenue per unit increases sufficiently, total revenue can grow despite fewer units sold. The increase may reflect price, a more valuable sales mix, or both. The company’s reported measure matters: a stated net-price-and-mix contribution should not be described as a pure price increase.

Currency translation can raise reported revenue
When a company sells in several currencies, converting those results into its reporting currency can increase reported revenue if exchange rates move favorably. That translation effect does not mean local-currency sales or physical volume increased.
Portfolio changes can alter the reported comparison
Acquisitions, divestitures, and other changes in what a company owns can affect reported sales. Organic sales measures typically exclude some such effects under company-defined rules, so they may tell a different story from reported net sales.

What company filings show
PepsiCo LatAm Foods, first quarter 2026
PepsiCo reported that LatAm Foods net revenue increased 16% in the first quarter of 2026, while unit volume declined 2%, primarily reflecting Mexico. The company attributed the revenue increase to a 13-percentage-point favorable foreign-exchange impact, primarily from the strengthening Mexican peso, and effective net pricing; lower organic volume partly offset those factors. General Mills, fiscal 2026
General Mills’ consolidated net sales declined 5% in fiscal 2026. Its reported bridge showed a negative 8-percentage-point contribution from volume growth, a positive 2 points from net price realization and mix, and a positive 1 point from foreign exchange. In other words, favorable price/mix and currency contributions were not large enough to offset the volume decline. Organic net sales declined 2%; organic volume and organic net price realization/mix each contributed negative 1 point. PepsiCo EMEA, fiscal 2025
In fiscal 2025, PepsiCo reported EMEA net revenue growth of 8%, primarily reflecting effective net pricing and a 2.5-percentage-point favorable foreign-exchange impact, partly offset by organic volume decline. Convenient-food unit volume declined 5%. This is another example of revenue rising while a reported volume measure fell, with both pricing and currency contributing. PepsiCo’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K.

- Confirm the scope and period. Check whether the figure covers a company, segment, or geography, and note the fiscal period. Do not treat results from different scopes as directly comparable.
- Check what “volume” means. A company may measure units, cases, weight, or another physical quantity. General Mills says its volume-growth contributions are measured in tons based on the stated weight of product shipments. General Mills’ annual reports.
- Separate price/mix from pure pricing. If the company reports one combined contribution, the figure does not reveal how much came from price versus a shift in products or channels.
- Identify currency effects. Determine whether reported revenue includes favorable or unfavorable translation from foreign currencies.
- Check for portfolio changes. Acquisitions, divestitures, and other listed items can affect reported sales and the comparison with organic results.
- Compare the contributions. Revenue rises only when favorable effects outweigh the negative volume contribution and any other offsets in the reported bridge.
These checks help distinguish revenue growth from demand or physical growth: sales can increase without more units being sold, and a reported volume decline does not by itself show why consumers bought less.
