Requiring a page visitor to fetch a stylesheet, font, script, or icon is not proof that the visitor is human. In OfirbAgent’s 2026 account, a rendering fleet behind residential proxies fetched the expected assets, passed the filter, and still produced highly repetitive traffic. Grouping visits by browser string, referrer status, visit count, timing, and network relationships reduced 487 apparent visitors to 7 over 28 days, and cut a second sample from 113 apparent browsers to 56 after one coordinated cluster was removed. The practical answer is to treat asset loading as one weak signal, cluster suspicious visits, test the rules with synthetic controls, and report likely fleets separately instead of silently deleting every unusual reader.

What happened when the stylesheet requirement was bypassed?

The filter used a simple behavioral gate: count a visitor as a real browser only when a page request was followed by a request for a static asset such as CSS, a font, JavaScript, or an icon. That raised the cost of a basic scraper, but it did not distinguish a person using a browser from an automated system capable of rendering pages.

OfirbAgent’s 28-day analysis shows how sharply the result changed once one-request visits were grouped rather than judged individually:

Traffic sample Initial count After grouping What changed
All apparent visitors 487 7 480 one-request visits were grouped across 429 different /24 networks.
/radar/ apparent real browsers 113 56 A 57-visit fleet cluster was removed from the count.
Homepage visits 198 128 The same grouping rule changed the total by 70 visits.
Desktop Linux visits with a google.com referrer 26 26 They remained counted because no second signal confirmed automation.

The 57-visit cluster on /radar/ had an identical browser string, described as Windows with Chrome 152.0.0.0, no referrer, exactly one visit per address, and asset requests completed within the same second. Its 36 /16 network ranges overlapped ranges used by a separate scraper. A smaller group of 13 addresses on Tencent Cloud ranges appeared on the homepage. Those patterns are more informative together than any one address or request.

The 26 desktop-Linux visits with a Google referrer represented about 46% of referred traffic in that sample. The author compared that informally with a roughly 4% real-world search-engine share, but retained the visits because the available evidence did not establish that they were bots. This is a site-specific observation, not a population estimate.

Why does fetching CSS fail as a human test?

A stylesheet request proves only that the sender was willing and able to request an asset. A headless browser, a full browser controlled remotely, or a rendering service can perform the same sequence as a person. Once an operator decides that passing the gate is worth the bandwidth and compute cost, the test becomes an economic hurdle rather than an identity check.

Every request field remains a claim controlled by the sender. User-agent strings can be copied, referrers can be supplied, and an automated client can request assets in the expected order. The important distinction is between capability and independent evidence:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Asset fetch: shows that the client requested a resource after the page.
  • Browser string: reports what software the client claims to use.
  • Referrer: reports the navigation source supplied with the request.
  • Network address: identifies an egress point, not necessarily a person or device.
  • Timing and repetition: can reveal coordination when many otherwise separate visits behave identically.

Calling the stylesheet test a “bot detector” therefore overstates what it measures. It is better described as a low-cost filter for clients that do not bother to load assets.

How can I group suspicious visits across IPs and browser signatures?

Start with a visit-level record, then compare groups of visits that share several fields. Do not decide from one address in isolation: a single person may appear on a changing mobile address, while a fleet may deliberately distribute requests across hundreds of addresses.

1. Normalize the fields you will compare

For each page request, retain the timestamp, requested path, response status, user-agent, referrer presence and value, client address, and the times of subsequent static-asset requests. Derive a visit identifier using your normal session or time-window rule, and record the number of page visits associated with it. Preserve enough precision to see whether assets arrived in the same second.

2. Build a shared signature

A useful signature combines identical user-agent text, referrer status, visit count, and network characteristics. For example, “same browser string + no referrer + one visit + asset completion within one second” is more actionable than “address came from a proxy.” Keep the original values attached so an analyst can inspect the group rather than trusting a score with no explanation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Compare network prefixes, not only complete addresses

A /24 groups addresses sharing the first 24 bits of an IPv4 address; a /16 is a broader prefix sharing the first 16 bits. A fleet can rotate individual addresses while remaining concentrated in a set of prefixes. In the reported case, 480 one-request visits appeared across 429 /24 networks, while the smaller /radar/ fleet overlapped 36 /16 ranges associated with another scraper. Prefix overlap is a clue to coordination, not proof by itself.

4. Apply the explicit cluster rule

Flag a group when at least 10 distinct addresses share the same one-visit, no-referrer signature. Print that group separately with the shared signature, the address count, the relevant prefixes, and the asset timing. The threshold is a transparent operating rule from this case, not a universal definition of a bot.

5. Inspect exceptions instead of forcing them into a verdict

Visits with a referrer, multiple page views, different browser strings, or slower and less synchronized asset timing should remain in a review category unless other evidence links them to a fleet. This prevents a broad network rule from erasing legitimate one-time readers.

Which signals should a practical filter combine?

No single signal is reliable against a fleet that is willing to spend money. Combining signals improves the cost of evasion, but also increases the chance of excluding an unusual real visitor. The following comparison keeps those trade-offs visible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Approach Signals required Sender’s evasion cost False-positive risk Recommended treatment
Asset-only gate Page request followed by CSS, font, script, or icon Low; a renderer can fetch the same assets Low for blocking, but it misclassifies capable bots as browsers Use as a weak screening signal, never as proof of a person.
Referrer check Presence or value of a referrer Low; the field can be supplied or omitted Medium; privacy settings and direct visits remove legitimate referrers Use for context and segmentation.
User-agent and network clustering Identical browser text, visit count, timing, /24 or /16 relationships Higher; the fleet must vary behavior and distribution Medium to high if used as an automatic block Flag and report groups, then investigate.
Combined, report-separately model Assets plus referrer, signature, timing, and network patterns Highest among these basic methods Lower when suspicious groups are not silently deleted Keep ordinary traffic and publish a separate suspected-fleet count.

How do I implement the analysis without losing legitimate readers?

Use a two-output model: one count for traffic that meets your ordinary inclusion rules and another for traffic that matches a documented suspicious-fleet rule. That preserves the raw evidence and makes later corrections possible.

  1. Capture raw events first. Store page and asset requests before applying exclusions. Include the exact user-agent and referrer values, not only a parsed browser name.
  2. Define a visit window. Decide how page and asset requests are associated with one visit, document the timeout, and apply it consistently across paths.
  3. Generate signatures. Combine browser string, referrer status, visit count, asset timing, and network prefixes. Keep a human-readable representation alongside any hashed key.
  4. Count distinct addresses per signature. Separate groups with fewer than 10 addresses from groups meeting the 10-or-more review threshold. Do not silently discard the smaller groups.
  5. Check cross-path and cross-day overlap. A signature that appears on several paths or overlaps another scraper’s prefixes is stronger evidence of a fleet than a one-page anomaly.
  6. Publish both totals. Report included traffic, suspected fleet traffic, and the rule that produced the second number. Keep the raw records available for reclassification.

For an operations dashboard, show the signature, distinct-address count, prefix count, first and last timestamps, page paths, referrer status, and proportion of asset-complete visits. Analysts can then see whether a spike is caused by one coordinated group or many unrelated readers.

How should I test the threshold and avoid overfitting?

Use synthetic positive and negative controls whenever you change the grouping logic. The documented control set is deliberately small and tests the boundary conditions that are easiest to break.

  • A synthetic fleet of 10 distinct addresses with the same one-visit, no-referrer signature should be flagged.
  • A group of 9 with the same signature should not be excluded by that specific rule.
  • The same 10-address group with a referrer should not be excluded by the no-referrer rule alone.

Run these controls against the same pipeline that processes production logs, including address normalization and visit assignment. If a code change causes the controls to fail, stop using the resulting count until the rule is corrected. Keep a dated record of the threshold and the fields used so that a future analyst can reproduce why a group was separated.

Should suspicious traffic be blocked or reported separately?

For measurement, reporting separately is safer than deleting. A suspected fleet can be shown as its own category while ordinary analytics retain visits that lack enough evidence for exclusion. This approach also lets you revise the classification if the group later proves to be a monitoring service, a legitimate accessibility tool, or a real audience behind a shared network.

Blocking may be appropriate for abuse prevention, but the evidence needed to deny access is stronger than the evidence needed to annotate a report. A shared proxy, cloud range, or repeated browser string can identify a pattern without identifying an individual attacker. Keep enforcement decisions separate from audience measurement and document the operational reason for any block.

What can the remaining traffic tell me about “real humans”?

Very little with certainty. After the fleet cluster was removed, 56 /radar/ visits remained, but the method does not prove that those visitors were human. The retained 26 desktop-Linux visits with a Google referrer illustrate the correct posture: when the available signals conflict or are incomplete, label the traffic as unconfirmed rather than upgrading it to verified humans.

A more capable fleet could vary browser strings, add plausible referrers, spread requests over longer intervals, and use a wider range of networks. That would raise its operating cost, which is useful, but it would not make the filter an airtight measurement. Treat the rules as an evolving economic hurdle and watch for changes in the patterns that made the original cluster visible.

What are the main failure modes and fixes?

  • Failure: counting every asset-complete visit as human. Fix: retain asset completion as one feature and add clustering, timing, and network context.
  • Failure: blocking an entire hosting or proxy range. Fix: use range overlap as an investigation clue; require corroborating behavior before exclusion.
  • Failure: treating a missing referrer as malicious. Fix: keep direct, privacy-protected, and copied-link visits in the ordinary pool unless another signal links them to a coordinated group.
  • Failure: hiding the removed traffic. Fix: publish the suspected-fleet count and the exact grouping rule next to the included count.
  • Failure: never testing the boundary. Fix: run the 10-address, 9-address, and referrer-bearing synthetic controls after every rule change.

What is the defensible conclusion from this case?

Loading a stylesheet is useful for filtering unsophisticated clients, but it cannot establish that a visitor is human. The stronger method is transparent clustering: combine sender-controlled fields with repetition, timing, and network relationships; separate suspicious groups from ordinary traffic; and verify the rule with positive and negative controls. The OfirbAgent figures demonstrate the scale of the correction on one site over 28 days, not a universal bot prevalence rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an automated client fetch CSS without running a full browser?

Yes. A script can request the stylesheet directly, while a headless or remote browser can execute the page and retrieve every referenced asset. Asset completion therefore measures a client’s behavior, not whether a person is watching the page.

Does a Google referrer prove that a visit came from a search user?

No. The referrer is a request field supplied by the client and can be absent because of privacy controls, direct navigation, or copied links. It is useful as supporting context, but it should not be treated as identity evidence.

Are residential-proxy addresses always signs of a bot fleet?

No. Residential networks can carry ordinary households, mobile users, corporate traffic, or privacy tools. A coordinated signature across many addresses is more informative than the network category alone.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I preserve for an audit of a bot classification?

Keep the raw request timestamp, path, status, user-agent, referrer value or absence, client address, asset timing, derived visit identifier, and the rule version that classified it. Protect access to those records because the combination can reveal browsing patterns even when individual fields look harmless.
