Scheduled tasks and ChatGPT Work’s cloud browser can run remotely; a Work step that uses files or tools on your connected computer depends on that computer staying online. First identify where the task is running, then check whether it is waiting for you or missing access.
These distinctions reflect OpenAI Help Center documentation checked on October 3, 2026. Features and availability can vary by account, app version, plan, region, rollout, and workspace permissions.
Does a ChatGPT task keep running after you close the app?
It depends on the task type:

OpenAI says scheduled team tasks run in the cloud, while its cloud-browser tasks run remotely. Those claims do not apply to every ordinary chat or to steps that rely on your computer. Local work sync also requires workspace enablement and access to both local and cloud Work.
How to troubleshoot a task that did not finish

Identify the task mode
Work out whether the task is scheduled, using Work’s cloud browser, or using files or tools on a connected computer. The execution location determines whether your computer needs to remain available.

Check the status and previous runs
Open Scheduled and select Previous runs to inspect the result and any error. A schedule marked Completed means no future runs are scheduled; it does not, by itself, show that a particular run succeeded. See OpenAI’s task management guidance.

Verify the schedule or trigger
Check the saved date, time, time zone, recurrence, or event conditions. A trigger only works for supported events and an eligible task configuration. The task guide explains how to manage schedules: Scheduled tasks in ChatGPT.

Look for a pause that needs your input
Return to the task conversation and check for a request for information, sign-in, confirmation, or takeover. A cloud-browser task may not proceed until you respond. Consequential steps such as booking or payment require confirmation. See OpenAI’s cloud-browser guidance.

Restore app access and permissions
If the error concerns an app connection, check that the right account is connected and has the permissions the task needs. In a managed workspace, confirm that you are using the appropriate workspace and team; ask an administrator to check missing task or app permissions if necessary. Connected apps can only expose information and actions allowed by their configured account and permissions. See the scheduled task guide.

Bring the computer back online for local work
If the task uses local files or tools, reconnect and sign in to the correct account and workspace on that computer. A disconnected machine cannot supply its local resources to a running local turn. OpenAI says the turn will not automatically migrate to cloud execution: Agent Security and local work sync in ChatGPT.

Check for a completed action before retrying
Inspect the run history and the destination before rerunning a task that sends a message or changes a file. The action may have happened even if you did not see the completion. OpenAI’s task controls cover future runs; do not assume pausing or deleting a schedule stops a run already in progress. See the task management guidance.

Why a task can remain unfinished even when it runs remotely
- It is waiting for you: A cloud task can pause for missing information, secure sign-in, confirmation, or a user takeover.
- The site restricts automation: A website that works in your usual browser may block automated access. Some sign-in or transaction steps may not be supported, so you may need to take over or complete the final step. OpenAI’s cloud-browser documentation covers these limitations.
- The connected account lacks access: A task can only use the information and actions permitted by its account and configured app permissions. See OpenAI’s task guide.
- The feature is unavailable in your setup: Availability can depend on your account, app version, plan, region, rollout, and workspace permissions. Local work sync, for example, requires workspace enablement and access to local and cloud Work. Check your current app and workspace controls rather than assuming a feature is enabled. OpenAI’s local work sync guidance describes its requirements.
- The scheduled task needs renewed attention: Scheduled tasks may pause when inactive, when more action is required, or when their associated chat is deleted. Check the task guide for current behavior.
How to prevent the same problem next time
- For scheduled or cloud-browser tasks, make sure the required account connections and permissions are in place before leaving the task.
- For local steps, keep the connected computer online and signed in to the correct account and workspace while the step uses it.
- Check the task conversation for requests that need information, sign-in, confirmation, or takeover.
- Before retrying a task that can send or modify something, inspect both its run history and the destination.
