There is no single best wife in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. The right choice depends on whether you want a spouse who can keep adventuring, a convenient home-based partner, a particular prerequisite, or a role-playing fit. For a traveling companion, start with Aela the Huntress, Jenassa, Lydia, or Mjoll the Lioness. For a settlement-focused marriage, Ysolda or Camilla Valerius are straightforward alternatives.
This guide explains what each example requires, how the marriage quest works, what benefits are actually reported, where your spouse can live, and which mistakes can permanently limit your options.
How should you choose a wife in Skyrim?
Choose by function first, then by personality and story. A follower-capable spouse can continue traveling with you after the wedding; a non-follower spouse remains tied to a home or settlement. The most important decision is therefore whether marriage should add a combat companion or mainly provide a home, income, and role-playing relationship.
| Decision factor | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Follower availability | Is the candidate marked as a follower or hireling before marriage? | Only a follower-capable spouse can continue adventuring with you. |
| Prerequisite | What quest, purchase, favor, or fee unlocks the marriage dialogue? | A short favor can be convenient; a faction questline takes substantially longer. |
| Home and move-in plan | Which purchased home or settlement will be used? | The selected home affects where the spouse, and any children, stay. |
| Utility | Does the candidate offer combat help, training, or a merchant role? | Some spouses add practical value beyond the general marriage benefits. |
| Role-playing fit | Consider faction, race, personality, appearance, and story. | Marriage cannot normally be undone, so the character should fit your playthrough. |
| DLC or edition | Confirm whether an add-on candidate is available in your edition. | The cited candidate guides do not establish add-on requirements for every possible spouse. |
Community guides published in 2026 count 66 marriage candidates in total, including 30 women. That is a guide-reported count, not an official Bethesda ranking or endorsement of any candidate.

Which Skyrim wives can become followers?
Aela, Jenassa, Lydia, and Mjoll are strong examples when you want your spouse to remain useful on the road. Their unlock conditions differ considerably, so the fastest option is not necessarily the strongest role-playing choice.
Aela the Huntress
Aela is based in Whiterun and is associated with the Companions. You must complete the Companions questline before she becomes available for marriage. The candidate tables also associate her with archery training, making her a natural fit for an archer-themed or Companions-centered character.
Choose Aela when you want a spouse whose identity is closely tied to a major faction and who can accompany you after the ceremony. Her route is longer than a simple hireling favor because it requires completion of the Companions storyline.

Jenassa
Jenassa is a Whiterun hireling. Her marriage route is comparatively quick if you already have 500 gold: hire her at least once, then pursue the normal Amulet of Mara proposal process. Because she is follower-capable, she can remain an adventuring companion after marriage.
Jenassa is the practical choice for a player who wants a follower spouse without committing to a lengthy faction questline. Her requirement is a payment and a hiring interaction rather than a multi-stage story arc.
Lydia
Lydia is the Whiterun housecarl. Her marriage prerequisites are completing Dragon Rising and purchasing Breezehome. Once unlocked, she is follower-capable and can travel with you as a spouse.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Lydia suits a character whose story is centered on Whiterun and an early owned home. Because Breezehome is part of the requirement, she is less convenient if you have not yet completed the early Whiterun progression or do not intend to use that house.
Mjoll the Lioness
Mjoll is based in Riften. To unlock her, complete Grimsever’s Return. The follower reference describes her as essential, and the marriage tables list her as follower-capable.
Mjoll is a strong choice when survivability and a Riften-centered story matter. Her prerequisite is a dedicated retrieval quest, so she is not the fastest candidate, but it provides a clear objective rather than requiring an entire faction campaign.
Which non-follower wives are easiest to make part of a home?
Ysolda and Camilla Valerius illustrate the home-oriented route. They do not continue as traveling followers, but they can still provide the standard household benefits once the marriage is complete.
Ysolda
Ysolda can be found in the Whiterun market. Her prerequisite is to bring her one mammoth tusk. This is a compact favor compared with a faction questline, making her attractive when you want a Whiterun-based spouse and do not need another combat companion.

Camilla lives in Riverwood and is tied to the Riverwood Trader. Complete The Golden Claw to unlock her marriage path. She is a non-follower option, so plan on her remaining at a home or settlement rather than joining dungeon runs.

Camilla fits a Riverwood or trade-oriented role-play. Her location also makes her a natural choice for a character who wants a quieter domestic arrangement instead of a spouse drawn from a warrior faction.
How do you get married in Skyrim?
The ceremony follows a fixed sequence. Completing a candidate’s favor is not enough by itself, and wearing an Amulet of Mara without first speaking with Maramal will not unlock the proposal dialogue.
- Speak with Maramal. Talk to Maramal about marriage before attempting to propose. This conversation activates the marriage system.
- Obtain an Amulet of Mara. You need the amulet for the proposal step. Simply finding or wearing one before the Maramal conversation does not replace that conversation.
- Complete your chosen candidate’s prerequisite. Examples include the Companions questline for Aela, hiring Jenassa, completing Dragon Rising and buying Breezehome for Lydia, completing Grimsever’s Return for Mjoll, bringing a mammoth tusk to Ysolda, or completing The Golden Claw for Camilla.
- Wear the Amulet of Mara and speak to the candidate. With the prerequisite complete and the amulet equipped, the marriage dialogue should become available. If it does not, check that you completed the required favor and that Maramal’s introductory conversation is finished.
- Arrange the ceremony. Accept the proposal and follow the resulting instructions for the wedding ceremony.
- Attend the ceremony. The marriage is finalized when you attend. Afterward, decide where the spouse will live and whether you want the spouse to accompany you as a follower.
The exact prerequisite is candidate-specific, but the Maramal–amulet–favor–proposal–ceremony sequence is the standard process described by current community guides.

Marriage provides a shared domestic base and several recurring benefits. The commonly reported mechanics are the same regardless of whether the spouse is a follower or a home-based character.
- Home-cooked meal: Your spouse can provide a daily home-cooked meal.
- Spouse income: Guides report approximately 100 gold or more in spouse income. Treat that figure as a community-guide report rather than an official fixed Bethesda amount.
- Lover’s Comfort: Sleeping where your spouse is present grants Lover’s Comfort, described by the guides as 15% faster skill improvement for eight hours.
- Household presence: Your spouse can move into a purchased home, subject to the home arrangement you choose.
- Companion potential: If the spouse is follower-capable, the marriage does not remove that adventuring role.
Lover’s Comfort depends on sleeping where the spouse is present, so placing the spouse in a different home changes where you need to rest to receive that effect. A non-follower spouse still provides household benefits; the difference is that the spouse remains at home rather than joining your party.
Where should your spouse live?
Decide on the home before or immediately after the wedding. A spouse can move into a purchased home, but the selected arrangement determines where the spouse and any children stay. The most convenient house is not always the best role-playing location, and a home in one hold may be inconvenient if you spend most of your time elsewhere.

Use the house you visit most
If you want regular access to meals, income, and Lover’s Comfort, place the spouse in the property you use as your main base. A follower spouse can still be asked to travel later, but the home remains the reference point for household benefits.
Plan around children and multiple homes
The guides note that the home arrangement affects both spouse and children. Choose deliberately rather than assuming every owned property will function as an interchangeable family residence. If your character owns several homes, identify one primary household before completing the ceremony.
Match the home to the character
Whiterun candidates such as Aela, Jenassa, Lydia, and Ysolda support a Whiterun-centered story, while Mjoll naturally fits a Riften setting and Camilla a Riverwood one. This is a role-playing choice, not a universal mechanical ranking.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the main marriage mistakes and how do you avoid them?
Trying to propose before speaking with Maramal
The Amulet of Mara is not a substitute for the introductory conversation. If the proposal option is missing, return to Maramal, complete the marriage discussion, verify the candidate’s favor, and wear the amulet again.
Assuming every spouse can follow you
Confirm follower status before you commit. Aela, Jenassa, Lydia, and Mjoll are follower-capable examples; Ysolda and Camilla are home-based examples. A non-follower spouse will not become a dungeon companion simply because the wedding is complete.

Bethesda Support documents a vendor bug affecting a spouse who is also a follower: selling items through that spouse can produce no gold and make the items disappear. Bethesda’s actionable warning is: “To avoid this, do not use your spouse’s vendor functionality when they are a follower.” Use another merchant for sales instead of risking valuable equipment.

Choosing casually because you expect a divorce
The current guides report that normal Skyrim marriage cannot be undone and cannot be followed by another marriage. Choose the candidate, home, and role-playing relationship as a permanent decision for that character.
Assuming guide-reported numbers are official rankings
The 66-candidate count, the approximate spouse-income figure, and the benefit descriptions come from community guides. Bethesda has not published an official “best wife” ranking, so treat the recommendations here as decision guidance rather than a canonical tier list.

Recommended Free Tools
- You want your spouse in the party: Choose among Aela, Jenassa, Lydia, and Mjoll. Pick Jenassa for the shortest stated unlock route, Lydia for a Whiterun-and-Breezehome playthrough, Aela for a Companions or archery identity, or Mjoll for a Riften-centered character and an essential follower.
- You want a home and a simple favor: Choose Ysolda after bringing the mammoth tusk, or Camilla after completing The Golden Claw.
- You want faction role-play more than speed: Aela’s Companions route gives the marriage a strong story connection, while Mjoll’s Riften quest creates a distinct local identity.
- You already use Breezehome as your base: Lydia is the natural match because purchasing Breezehome is part of her requirement.
- You do not want another combat companion: A non-follower candidate such as Ysolda or Camilla keeps the relationship home-oriented.
- You are unsure: Delay the proposal until you have selected a home and confirmed the candidate’s follower status. The reported inability to divorce or remarry makes that pause worthwhile.
Is there an objectively best wife in Skyrim?
No. The strongest recommendation changes with the player’s priorities. Aela, Jenassa, Lydia, and Mjoll are better answers for a traveling Dragonborn; Ysolda and Camilla are better answers for a domestic or settlement-focused story. The game’s mechanics provide shared marriage benefits, but they do not establish one spouse as universally superior.
For most players, the practical shortlist is Jenassa for speed, Lydia for an early Whiterun home, Aela for Companions role-play, and Mjoll for a Riften-based essential follower. If none of those stories fit, choose Ysolda or Camilla for a simpler home arrangement and let the character’s personality, location, and prerequisite decide the final match.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I sell items to my spouse after marriage?
Avoid doing so when the spouse is also following you. Bethesda Support reports that this vendor interaction can award no gold and make the sold items disappear; use an unrelated merchant for sales instead.
Does wearing an Amulet of Mara by itself unlock marriage dialogue?
No. The marriage system must first be activated by speaking with Maramal, and the chosen candidate’s prerequisite must also be complete. Only then should you equip the amulet and propose.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow many female marriage candidates are in Skyrim?
A 2026 community guide counts 66 candidates overall, including 30 women. That is a guide-reported count, not an official Bethesda ranking or guarantee that every edition exposes the same add-on roster.
Should I choose a spouse before buying a house?
Choose a primary home before the ceremony whenever possible. The home arrangement determines where the spouse and any children stay, and it also determines where you need to sleep to receive Lover’s Comfort.
