The Apothecary Diaries is easiest to follow when you start with Maomao. She is an apothecary forced into Inner Palace service, where Jinshi recognizes her knowledge and places her as Gyokuyo’s food taster. That job connects her to the consorts, court mysteries and Jinshi’s increasingly personal interest. Her family is deliberately more complicated: Luomen raised her, while Lakan and Fengxian are her biological parents. The guide below separates public court identities from later revelations and labels spoilers clearly. Nippon TV lists an original season-three broadcast for October 2026, so season two should not be described as the current latest season on October 30, 2026.
What is the basic relationship map?
Maomao is the center of the story. Her medical and poison knowledge makes her valuable to Jinshi, her work puts her inside Gyokuyo’s household, and her past links the palace to the Verdigris House pleasure district. The following map gives the spoiler-safe version before the identity reveals.
| Name | Palace or Verdigris role | Relationship to Maomao or Jinshi | Spoiler level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maomao | Apothecary, food taster and lady-in-waiting | Central investigator; Jinshi’s partner in palace mysteries | Opening premise |
| Jinshi | Palace administrator presented as a eunuch | Recognizes Maomao’s ability and develops feelings for her | Opening premise; deeper identity later |
| Gyokuyo | Precious Consort of the Jade Pavilion | Maomao’s employer and protector; mother of Princess Lingli | Season one |
| Luomen | Physician outside the palace hierarchy | Maomao’s adoptive father and medical teacher | Season one family context |
| Lakan and Fengxian | Military strategist and former courtesan | Maomao’s biological father and mother | Season-one family spoilers |
| Pairin, Meimei and Joka | Three Princesses of Verdigris House | Courtesans who helped raise Maomao; she treats them as older sisters | Background |
| Xiaolan | Palace servant | Maomao’s friend | Season one |
| Shisui | Cheerful, insect-loving servant persona | Friend of Maomao in season two; identity spoiler below | Season-two spoilers |
VIZ summarizes the setup this way: “Maomao’s life as an apothecary is turned upside down when she’s abducted and sold to the Inner Palace as a maid.” Jinshi then notices that the apparently ordinary maid understands medicine and poisons, turning her into an indispensable investigator. See VIZ’s series page for the publisher’s synopsis: VIZ.
How do Maomao and Jinshi work together?
Jinshi brings Maomao into problems that require knowledge rather than rank, while Maomao supplies observations that palace officials overlook. Their partnership is practical first, but Jinshi’s interest grows beyond convenience; Maomao remains reluctant and their unequal social positions prevent a simple relationship label.

Maomao’s palace position
After being taken to the Inner Palace, Maomao’s apothecary skills lead Jinshi to appoint her Gyokuyo’s food taster and lady-in-waiting. Food tasting is not ceremonial busywork: it places Maomao close to possible poisoning, medical symptoms and household politics. Her blunt priorities are survival and solving the evidence in front of her, not courtly romance.
Jinshi’s household
Gaoshun is Jinshi’s dependable attendant, and Gaoshun’s son Basen also serves him. Hongniang leads Gyokuyo’s ladies-in-waiting. These roles matter because a mystery often depends on who can enter a room, carry a message or protect a consort; they are not interchangeable versions of Jinshi or Maomao.
What their romance does—and does not—establish
Jinshi’s attraction is increasingly visible, but Maomao does not respond as a conventional court heroine. The cited character material does not establish that they are married or provide a final romance status, so descriptions should stop at a developing, constrained relationship.

Who are Maomao’s biological and adoptive parents?
Maomao has two distinct parental lines. Luomen is the adoptive father who raised and educated her; Lakan and Fengxian are her biological parents. Calling Luomen her biological father erases the central tension between the family that formed Maomao and the parents connected to her birth.
Luomen: the father who raised her
Luomen is a physician and Maomao’s mentor. He teaches the disciplined medical thinking that later makes her useful in the palace. Their relationship is parental in everyday life even though he is not her biological parent.

Lakan and Fengxian: the season-one family reveal
Season-one family spoilers: Maomao’s biological father is Lakan, a military strategist, and her biological mother is Fengxian, a former courtesan. Lakan’s attempts to approach Maomao are unwelcome; her resistance is part of their relationship, not a minor genealogy detail. Fengxian’s history connects Maomao’s birth to the Verdigris House world and explains why palace investigations can become intensely personal.
Maomao’s found family at Verdigris House
Pairin, Meimei and Joka are the Three Princesses, the senior courtesans who helped raise Maomao. She treats them like older sisters rather than distant acquaintances. Lihaku, a military officer interested in Pairin, is not Maomao’s biological relative; that distinction prevents the pleasure-district and military casts from being mistakenly merged.
Which consort is connected to Maomao?
Gyokuyo is Maomao’s employer and protector, not her mother. The other consorts have separate households, ranks and histories, so a medical incident involving one woman can carry consequences for the entire rear palace.
| Consort | Position and family | Connection to Maomao |
|---|---|---|
| Gyokuyo | Precious Consort of the Jade Pavilion; mother of Princess Lingli | Employs Maomao as food taster and protects her |
| Lihua | Wise Consort; her infant son dies after exposure to poisonous makeup | Maomao helps identify the cause and later supports her recovery |
| Lishu | Much younger Virtuous Consort | Some attendants treat her poorly; Ah-Duo cares for her |
| Ah-Duo | Former Pure Consort | Her past is tied to the deeper imperial-family reveal |
| Loulan | New Pure Consort after Ah-Duo; daughter of politician Shishou | Her household becomes central to season-two identity mysteries |
Gyokuyo, Lihua, Lishu, Ah-Duo and Loulan are different women. Their titles describe rank and household position, not alternate names for one consort. A useful character guide from Crunchyroll sets out these consort roles: Crunchyroll’s character guide.
What are the important friendships outside the Inner Palace?
Maomao’s support network spans the palace, Verdigris House and her childhood. Xiaolan is her palace friend, while Pairin, Meimei and Joka provide the older-sister relationship she has with the pleasure district. Season two adds Shisui to the circle, but that name requires a later spoiler warning.

Who is Jinshi really?
Deeper identity spoilers: Jinshi has a public identity and a separate biological parentage. Official material identifies him as Ka Zuigetsu and presents him publicly as the current emperor’s younger brother. A later baby-swap account says Ah-Duo gave birth to the current emperor’s son and exchanged that infant with the imperial brother. Under that account, Jinshi is the emperor’s biological son while occupying the younger-brother position publicly.

The public court story is the identity most people must use. The biological account is a concealed explanation, not information every character possesses. The official film character profile supports the public identity: official character profile. Crunchyroll’s guide describes the swap, while the character reference at Wikipedia helps distinguish legal position from parentage. Keep those layers separate when explaining Jinshi.
Are Loulan, Shisui, Suirei and Suiren the same person?
No. Loulan disguises herself as the cheerful servant Shisui; Suirei is a separate woman identified as Loulan’s half-sister; and Suiren, spelled with an n, is Jinshi’s attendant. Similar romanization makes these names easy to confuse, but they belong to different characters and plotlines.
Loulan and Shisui
Season-two/deeper identity spoilers: Loulan is the Pure Consort who succeeds Ah-Duo and the daughter of politician Shishou. Her insect-loving servant identity is Shisui. Treat “Loulan” and “Shisui” as two roles used by one person, not two unrelated women.
Suirei
Suirei is a separate court lady and Loulan’s half-sister. She is not Loulan’s servant disguise and should not be used as an alternate spelling of Shisui.

Suiren
Suiren, with a final n, is Jinshi’s attendant. She is unrelated to the Suirei identity confusion. A reader discussion specifically flags the “Suirei” versus “Suiren” mix-up, but the plot distinction comes from the character references rather than from fan terminology: reader discussion.
How should newcomers handle the story’s different versions?
The light novels, the Nekokurage-illustrated Square Enix manga adaptation and Minoji Kurata’s Maomao’s Notes on the Inner Palace manga are related works, not one interchangeable publication. Check which adaptation a character description refers to before assuming that every release reveals information at the same point.
For physical readers, VIZ lists Maomao’s Notes on the Inner Palace, Vol. 1 as a paperback with ISBN 978-1-9747-6871-4 and an October 20, 2026 release date: VIZ volume page. That subtitle identifies Kurata’s adaptation and distinguishes it from the other manga line.
Why do these relationships matter to the mysteries?
The palace is organized by rank, household access and presumed parentage. A poisoned cosmetic can affect an imperial child; a consort’s attendants can determine which explanation reaches the emperor; and Maomao’s family history links court strategy to Verdigris House. The plot therefore asks two questions at once: what happened medically, and who has the authority or motive to control the story?
- Medical expertise: Maomao can identify toxins, symptoms and inconsistencies that rank alone cannot resolve.
- Household politics: Consorts have separate loyalties and attendants, so evidence can become a political threat.
- Access: Jinshi, Gaoshun, Hongniang and the ladies-in-waiting determine who can move information through the palace.
- Hidden parentage: Lakan, Fengxian, Luomen, Ah-Duo and Jinshi’s birth exchange show why public identity cannot always be treated as biological fact.
What is the current anime status?
Nippon TV’s English series information lists season three with an original broadcast in October 2026. Because the article date is October 30, 2026, season two is not the latest season to cite; availability and episode timing can still vary by territory and platform. The character relationships above are organized by spoiler depth rather than by a claim that every market has the same release schedule: Nippon TV series information.

How we picked the relationships in this guide
The map prioritizes characters who explain Maomao’s palace job, Jinshi’s role, the consort households, Maomao’s two family lines and the identity names most often confused. Minor courtiers are omitted unless their connection clarifies a central relationship. Public status, biological parentage and spoiler timing are kept separate wherever the cited character material distinguishes them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is The Apothecary Diaries set in a real Chinese dynasty?
No. The rear-palace court is a fictional setting that draws on historical court conventions; it should not be presented as a factual account of a named Chinese dynasty. Titles and customs help establish the world, but they do not identify a specific historical emperor or dynasty.
Does Maomao become Gyokuyo’s daughter?
No. Gyokuyo is Maomao’s employer and protector, and Maomao serves in the Jade Pavilion household. Their trust can feel familial, but the story does not replace Maomao’s adoptive relationship with Luomen or her biological parentage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy does Jinshi keep using a eunuch presentation?
His palace presentation protects the public role and access expected of an administrator in the Inner Palace. The deeper birth-swap information is secret, so his public persona and biological identity cannot be treated as the same thing.
Where can I start reading the manga?
VIZ lists Minoji Kurata’s Maomao’s Notes on the Inner Palace, Vol. 1 as a paperback released October 20, 2026, ISBN 978-1-9747-6871-4. That is a distinct adaptation, so check the subtitle and illustrator when choosing between manga editions.
Is Shisui a nickname for Suirei?
No. Shisui is Loulan’s servant persona, while Suirei is a separate woman and Loulan’s half-sister. Suiren, with an “n,” is Jinshi’s attendant, creating a third, unrelated name.
