For routine storage cleanup, use Windows’ Storage settings or Disk Cleanup and review each category before removing it. Leave the system file cache and Delivery Optimization cache to Windows. Clear the Windows Update, Microsoft Store, or DNS cache only when troubleshooting the specific problem each one addresses. Treat “Previous Windows installation(s)” as a rollback option, not ordinary temporary data.
Quick guide: what to clear and what to leave alone
| Item | Best use | Recommendation | Consequence to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Temporary files and thumbnails shown in Windows cleanup tools | Freeing disk space | Review the categories and the space Windows estimates, then remove only what you understand. | Some files may be useful to an app or for offline access; “temporary” does not guarantee that every file is disposable at that moment. |
| Delivery Optimization files | Freeing disk space | Normally leave them alone; Windows clears this cache automatically. If needed, select the category in Disk Cleanup. | Windows may need to download content again. |
| Windows Update cache | Troubleshooting failed updates or suspected corrupt update files | Clear only as part of the documented repair sequence: stop Windows Update, remove the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, then start the service again. |
It is a troubleshooting action, not routine maintenance. |
| Microsoft Store cache | A specific Store-related Temp-folder problem | Use the symptom-specific steps described below, including wsreset.exe. |
Do not treat it as a general PC-cleaning step. |
| DNS resolver cache | Troubleshooting stale or failed name lookups | Inspect with ipconfig /displaydns; clear with ipconfig /flushdns when appropriate. |
It does not meaningfully free disk space. |
| System file cache / standby memory | Windows’ normal file and memory management | Leave it under Windows management. | Forcibly emptying it is not a supported routine speed-up strategy. |
| Previous Windows installation(s) / Windows.old | Recovering space after an upgrade | Remove only if you accept losing the option to roll back to the previous Windows version. | Deleting it removes rollback files, and the deletion cannot be undone to restore that option. |
How to free storage safely
Start with Windows’ built-in cleanup tools rather than manually deleting unfamiliar folders. Windows displays categories and, in relevant views, an estimate of the space each can recover. Disk Cleanup also describes the categories it offers; check the selections instead of accepting them blindly, since some items, such as thumbnails, may already be selected.
- In File Explorer, open This PC and check the available space on the drive.
- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Choose Cleanup recommendations or Temporary files. Review the category names and the space Windows says may be recovered.
- Leave Previous Windows installation(s) unselected if you may need to return to the previous Windows version. Review any offline-file category if you need network files available while disconnected.
- Select only the categories you understand and use the on-screen cleanup action, such as Clean up or Remove files. You can also use Disk Cleanup and review its category descriptions before confirming.
- Check available space again in This PC before moving on to personal files or troubleshooting a particular feature.
Windows’ “temporary files” label is not a guarantee that every file is safe to remove without checking. Programs may keep temporary information in a Temp folder while they are running. Offline Files, meanwhile, are local copies of network files intended to remain available without a connection. Microsoft describes these categories in its Windows drive-space guidance and Disk Cleanup reference.
Which caches should usually stay under Windows management?
System file cache and standby memory
Windows caches data read from disks in system memory and also uses a write-back cache for file writes. Cached pages may remain in the cache working set or move to the standby list, where they count as available memory. Windows manages this system file cache continuously; for routine maintenance, leave it alone rather than using a utility or command that promises a speed boost by emptying memory caches. See Microsoft’s Cache Manager documentation.

Delivery Optimization cache
Delivery Optimization helps supply content from Windows Update, Microsoft Store, and other Microsoft services. Its cache normally clears itself after a short time or when cached content is taking too much disk space. If you need the space sooner, Microsoft documents selecting Delivery Optimization Files in Disk Cleanup; there is no need to hunt down and erase its folder manually. See Delivery Optimization in Windows.
When to clear a cache to fix a specific problem
Windows Update: only for update troubleshooting
Corrupt cached update files can cause update errors. If you are troubleshooting that kind of failure, Microsoft’s sequence is to stop the Windows Update service, delete the contents inside C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, and then start the service again. Do not delete the folder as routine cleanup. Microsoft also recommends running the Windows Update troubleshooter where relevant. Follow the steps in Troubleshoot problems updating Windows.

Microsoft Store: when its Temp-folder files keep returning
This is a specific case, not a general recommendation to reset the Store whenever you clean a PC: Microsoft’s low-storage guidance addresses a Temp folder that quickly fills with application package files used by Microsoft Store after cleanup recommendations have been used. For that issue, the documented path is to reset Microsoft Store, run wsreset.exe to clear its cache, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, and restart the computer. See Microsoft’s free-up-drive-space guidance.
DNS: when a name lookup is stale or failing
The DNS Client resolver cache holds entries loaded from the local Hosts file and DNS records recently obtained from configured servers. Windows can use those entries to resolve frequently queried names without first asking a DNS server. In Command Prompt, ipconfig /displaydns displays the cache and ipconfig /flushdns clears and resets it. Use the latter when troubleshooting name resolution, not to reclaim drive space. Microsoft documents both commands in ipconfig.

Two cleanup choices that affect access or recovery
Previous Windows installation(s)
Windows ordinarily deletes the prior installation ten days after an upgrade. Before then, removing Previous Windows installation(s) can reclaim space, but it deletes the files needed to go back to the earlier Windows version. Microsoft says that removal cannot be undone to restore the rollback option. Keep it if you are not ready to give up that recovery path. Details are in Free up drive space in Windows.
Offline Files
If you use network files while disconnected, check before removing any offline-file copies offered by Disk Cleanup. Those local copies are what make the files available without a network connection. Microsoft explains the category in its Disk Cleanup reference.

- Low storage, no specific error: Review Temporary files or Cleanup recommendations in Storage settings, or use Disk Cleanup.
- Windows Update errors: Run the relevant troubleshooter; clear the update cache only with the documented service-stop and restart sequence.
- Microsoft Store-related Temp folder fills again: Follow the Store-specific reset,
wsreset.exe, troubleshooter, and restart path. - A website or device name will not resolve correctly: Inspect or flush the DNS resolver cache as a network troubleshooting step.
