Roku cannot run a VPN app directly. The most reliable solution is to connect Roku to a VPN-enabled router; ExpressVPN is the easiest permanent choice because it documents dedicated and manually configured routers plus a virtual-router method. NordVPN delivered the fastest retained speed in the cited computer test, Proton VPN suits users comfortable with manual router configuration, and Private Internet Access is the budget-oriented alternative in this shortlist.

Gizmodo’s September 4, 2026 comparison tested five VPN services with a Roku Ultra across router, hotspot and casting-style methods. Its computer baseline was 190.36 Mbps, and every measured service exceeded the 15–25 Mbps range the article identifies as typical for 4K streaming. Those figures are not direct Roku-through-router measurements, so router hardware, server distance and Wi-Fi quality matter more than a headline app speed.

Can you install a VPN app on Roku?

No. Roku OS does not support native VPN applications, and Roku provides no device-level DNS setting for configuring a VPN or Smart DNS service. A VPN must run on a device upstream from Roku, then Roku connects through that protected network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NordVPN’s support documentation says Roku OS is unsupported by its app and recommends a VPN-enabled router or protected hotspot. ExpressVPN gives the same guidance. In practice, you have three workable paths:

  • VPN-enabled router: the permanent whole-home option. Every device that joins the selected Wi-Fi network uses the VPN.
  • Virtual router or Windows mobile hotspot: a computer runs the VPN and shares that connection with Roku.
  • Casting or screen mirroring: a phone or computer runs the VPN and sends video to a compatible Roku model, phone and app combination.

Changing the VPN exit location changes the network location that installed Roku apps see. It does not add a channel that your Roku account or Channel Store region does not offer. Provider setup instructions also warn that changing a Roku account’s region can require a separate account and may trigger a factory reset.

Which VPN is best for Roku in 2026?

Choose ExpressVPN for the simplest permanent installation, NordVPN when measured speed is your priority, Proton VPN for advanced manual-router control, and Private Internet Access when a lower-cost alternative is the deciding factor. None can be installed on Roku itself.

Priority Recommended service Why it fits Roku Important limitation
Easiest permanent setup ExpressVPN Supports a dedicated VPN router, router app, manual router configuration and virtual-router sharing. Its documentation specifically describes using a computer or phone hotspot with Roku. Roku still connects indirectly; you must configure the router or hotspot first.
Speed-oriented choice NordVPN Retained the most speed in the cited computer test and supports router and VPN-hotspot approaches. The app cannot run on Roku, and computer results do not equal throughput from your router.
Advanced manual-router users Proton VPN Included in the Roku comparison and suitable for readers who want to manage router configuration themselves. The cited material does not establish a dedicated Roku app or a one-click router setup.
Budget alternative Private Internet Access Included in the same test and usable through the same upstream-router or hotspot model. Confirm current router support, simultaneous-device terms and US price before subscribing.

Top10VPN separately tested Roku Streaming Stick 4K and Roku Ultra LT with AirPlay, Android screen mirroring, Windows mobile hotspot, Smart DNS and VPN-router methods. It ranked ExpressVPN first for Roku with a 9.8/10 Roku rating in testing dated September 2026. That rating evaluates a broader Roku test set than the Roku Ultra comparison, so treat it as corroborating setup evidence rather than a direct speed ranking.

What speeds did the Roku Ultra comparison record?

Gizmodo measured computer speeds against a 190.36 Mbps baseline. The published retained-speed results for the four services covered in this guide were:

Service Retained speed Share of 190.36 Mbps baseline How to interpret it
NordVPN 182.47 Mbps About 95.9% Highest retained speed in the cited computer test.
Proton VPN 181.11 Mbps About 95.1% Very close to the test leader under the same computer conditions.
ExpressVPN 177.92 Mbps About 93.5% Still far above the stated 4K requirement in the test context.
Private Internet Access 169.38 Mbps About 88.9% Lowest of the four published figures, but comfortably above the stated streaming threshold.

The comparison says typical 4K streaming needs roughly 15–25 Mbps. All measured services cleared that range in its test context. A Roku does not necessarily receive those computer results: a router’s processor, VPN protocol implementation, Wi-Fi band, server distance and other household traffic can reduce actual throughput. Select a nearby server and use a router capable of handling encrypted traffic rather than choosing solely by the fastest app benchmark.

How does each recommended VPN fit a Roku setup?

ExpressVPN: easiest permanent installation

ExpressVPN documents three router routes: a dedicated VPN router, an app for supported router hardware and manual configuration. It also documents a virtual router, so a computer or phone can share the VPN connection with Roku. Its product information says one subscription supports up to 14 simultaneous devices, which is useful when the router protects a household rather than one television.

For a permanent Roku installation, use a compatible router or preconfigured hardware, connect the router to your broadband service, choose a nearby server and join that Wi-Fi network from Roku. For occasional use, the hotspot approach avoids changing your main home network.

NordVPN: best result in the cited speed test

NordVPN recorded 182.47 Mbps from the 190.36 Mbps computer baseline, the highest retained result among the four published figures. Its support guidance explicitly says Roku OS is not supported and points users to a VPN-protected router or hotspot.

That speed lead does not guarantee the fastest Roku stream. Router CPU capacity and wireless conditions can dominate performance, and the test measured a computer connection rather than Roku traffic through your router. Choose NordVPN when speed headroom matters and you are willing to configure the network outside Roku.

Proton VPN: suited to manual-router control

Proton VPN was one of the services in the Roku comparison and recorded 181.11 Mbps in the cited computer test. It is the practical fit for readers who already understand their router’s VPN settings and want to manage the installation themselves.

On the US account pricing page checked October 25, 2026, Proton VPN Plus was listed at US$2.99 per month for 24 months, charged as US$71.76 upfront before tax. A public pricing page showed a separate US$3.49-per-month two-year promotion at the time, illustrating why you should confirm the final checkout price and renewal terms before paying.

Private Internet Access: lower-cost alternative

Private Internet Access recorded 169.38 Mbps in the same computer test and can be used through the router or hotspot methods described below. The available comparison identifies it as a budget-oriented alternative, but it does not establish a current US subscription price, exact simultaneous-device limit or universal router compatibility. Check those details on the provider’s US site and verify that your specific router model is supported.

How do you put a VPN on a router for Roku?

A router installation is the most dependable method because Roku sees an ordinary Wi-Fi connection while the router handles the VPN. Exact menu names differ by firmware, so use your provider’s current router guide for the model-specific fields.

  1. Confirm compatibility. Check that the router firmware supports the provider’s documented VPN method. A preconfigured VPN router avoids manual firmware and configuration work.
  2. Install or enable the VPN. In the router administration interface, install the provider’s router app or enter the manual configuration supplied for your account and server. Save the profile and activate it.
  3. Choose a nearby server. Start with a server geographically close to your home to reduce latency. If a service or app is unavailable at that location, test another nearby location rather than jumping to a distant country.
  4. Verify the connection. Confirm the router reports an active VPN tunnel, then check the public location from a computer on that Wi-Fi network. A successful computer check confirms the router path before you troubleshoot Roku.
  5. Connect Roku. On Roku, open Settings > Network > Set up connection > Wireless, select the VPN router’s Wi-Fi name, enter its password and complete the connection test.
  6. Test the streaming app. Open an app already installed on Roku and play a title for several minutes. If playback fails, disconnect the VPN briefly to determine whether the issue is the VPN route, the app, or the broadband connection.

Some routers let you place only selected devices on the VPN. If available, assigning Roku to the VPN network while leaving latency-sensitive devices on the normal connection can prevent unnecessary slowdowns.

How do you share a VPN from Windows with Roku?

A Windows mobile hotspot is a useful temporary or travel setup. The Windows computer must stay powered on and connected while Roku streams.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install the VPN application on Windows, sign in and connect to a nearby server.
  2. Open Settings > Network & internet > Mobile hotspot.
  3. Set Share my internet connection from to the connection carrying the VPN. Turn on Mobile hotspot and note the network name and password.
  4. If Windows offers a sharing or adapter-selection control, select the VPN adapter rather than the unprotected physical connection. The exact label depends on the VPN and Windows version.
  5. On Roku, open Settings > Network > Set up connection > Wireless, select the Windows hotspot and enter its password.
  6. Keep the VPN connected and prevent the computer from sleeping. If the VPN disconnects, Windows may continue sharing an unprotected connection until you turn the hotspot off.

Hotspot performance depends on the computer’s Wi-Fi hardware and its ability to route encrypted traffic. It is convenient for one Roku, but a router is better for a television used daily.

Can you cast or mirror a VPN stream to Roku?

Sometimes. AirPlay, Android screen mirroring and Windows mirroring depend on the Roku model, sender device, operating system and streaming app. Top10VPN included these methods in its Roku testing, but compatibility is not universal.

  1. Connect the phone or computer to the VPN and confirm the VPN is active before opening the streaming app.
  2. Put the sender and Roku on the same local network. If the VPN application has a local-network blocking option, allow local devices so discovery can work.
  3. Start playback, open the device’s AirPlay or screen-mirroring control and select the Roku.
  4. If the app shows a black screen or refuses playback, try the app’s own cast control, another supported sender or the router method. Some services restrict protected-video mirroring.

Mirroring sends the picture from the sender, so the Roku is not independently running the VPN. Closing the app, locking the phone or losing the VPN connection ends or changes playback.

What can a Roku VPN change—and what can it not change?

A VPN changes the public network location presented to apps that are already available on Roku. It can help when a service checks the apparent IP location, but it is not a substitute for changing Roku’s account or Channel Store region.

  • It can: route Roku traffic through a selected VPN server, encrypt the connection between the upstream device and the VPN provider, and give installed apps a different apparent IP location.
  • It cannot: install a VPN app on Roku, add channels missing from your account region, or guarantee that a streaming service will accept every VPN server.
  • Region changes have consequences: provider instructions indicate that changing the Roku account region may require a separate Roku account and can trigger a factory reset.

Keep your normal Roku account and test the VPN with content you are entitled to watch. If an app stops working after changing servers, return to a nearby server or disconnect the VPN to isolate the cause.

What router hardware matters most for Roku VPN streaming?

Look for documented VPN-client support, enough processing capacity for encrypted traffic and reliable dual-band Wi-Fi. A router that performs well without a VPN can still become the bottleneck when encryption is enabled.

  • VPN-client support: confirm that the firmware can act as a VPN client, not merely pass VPN traffic from individual computers.
  • Processor headroom: sustained 4K traffic can expose limits that a short speed test misses. If several household devices share the tunnel, choose hardware rated for higher encrypted throughput.
  • Wireless coverage: place the router where Roku receives a strong signal, or use a wired backhaul or mesh system supported by the VPN configuration.
  • Separate networks: guest or device-specific networks can keep only Roku traffic on the VPN when the firmware supports policy-based routing.
  • Recovery access: retain the router’s normal administrator credentials and a backup configuration so you can disable the VPN if a server or profile fails.

Preconfigured hardware, including dedicated VPN routers such as ExpressVPN Aircove, reduces setup steps, while a compatible router you already own may cost less. Compare the device’s VPN throughput and firmware support, not only its maximum Wi-Fi rating.

Why is Roku buffering or refusing to play after VPN setup?

Work through the network path in order rather than changing several settings at once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Roku will not join Wi-Fi: confirm the password, reboot Roku and the router, then try the normal non-VPN network. If the normal network works, revisit the router profile or hotspot adapter selection.
  • Video starts but buffers: choose a closer VPN server, move Roku nearer the access point, stop other large downloads and test the router with the VPN disabled. A computer speed result cannot prove that the router can sustain the same rate.
  • An app reports location or playback failure: try another server in the same country, clear the app’s connection by restarting Roku and check whether the title plays without the VPN. Some services block particular VPN addresses.
  • Mirroring cannot find Roku: ensure both devices are on the same local network and allow local-device discovery in the VPN application. If discovery still fails, use a router or Windows hotspot.
  • Channels disappeared after a region change: stop changing account settings and restore the original Roku account or follow the provider’s documented account-recovery process. A factory reset may be required after an account-region change.

How much does a Roku VPN cost?

The cited material gives one current price: Proton VPN Plus at US$2.99 per month for a 24-month term, or US$71.76 charged upfront before tax, on the US account page checked October 25, 2026. A public pricing page simultaneously displayed a US$3.49-per-month two-year promotion. These are time- and page-specific offers, not guaranteed renewal rates.

No verified current US prices for ExpressVPN, NordVPN or Private Internet Access were established in the comparison. Check each provider’s own US pricing page immediately before purchase, including the total paid upfront, renewal amount, refund terms and whether router use counts toward the plan’s device limit.

Which Roku VPN setup should you choose?

Use a VPN-enabled router if Roku is a primary television or several devices need the same location. Choose a Windows hotspot when you need a temporary connection and can leave a computer running. Use casting or mirroring only when your specific Roku model, sender and streaming app are confirmed compatible.

Among the tested services, ExpressVPN is the clearest first choice for a permanent Roku installation because its documentation covers dedicated routers, router software, manual setup and virtual routers. NordVPN is the speed-led alternative based on the 182.47 Mbps computer result. Proton VPN is appropriate for technically confident manual-router users, and Private Internet Access remains a lower-cost option to investigate after confirming current pricing and router support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a separate VPN subscription for every Roku device?

Usually no when the devices use one VPN-enabled router: the router carries the connection for every Roku on that network. Check the provider’s simultaneous-device terms if you instead run separate apps or hotspots; ExpressVPN’s cited product information lists up to 14 simultaneous devices.

Will a VPN make every streaming service available on Roku?

No. Roku still shows only channels available to the account and Channel Store region, and individual streaming services may block particular VPN servers. A VPN changes the apparent network location; it does not change entitlement or catalog rules.

Can I use a phone hotspot instead of Windows?

A phone hotspot can work when the phone’s VPN application shares VPN traffic with tethered devices, but operating-system and carrier behavior varies. Confirm that the hotspot clients inherit the VPN tunnel before relying on it for Roku playback.

Why does my Roku speed test look fine while 4K still buffers?

Roku playback can be limited by the router’s encrypted-throughput capacity, Wi-Fi interference, server distance or congestion at the streaming service. Test with the Roku near the access point, a nearby VPN server and other household downloads paused to identify the limiting link.
