Set several independent limits rather than trusting one cap: a small per-transaction or per-epoch limit, a hard budget for each unattended run, and a separate rolling daily or lifetime cap. Bound hashrate to what your specific rig, cooling and power setup has demonstrated it can sustain, then stop on budget or epoch exhaustion, test-duration expiry, critical temperature or power, sustained low hashrate, chain or hardware faults, or an unknown transaction result. There is no universal numeric setting; the safe values depend on the exact deployment.

Why do autonomous miners need several independent limits?

An autonomous miner can repeat actions faster and for longer than an operator might notice. If it spends, submits work or restarts automatically, one setting rarely controls every kind of exposure. A cap on a single transaction does not necessarily constrain the total spent in a run; a run budget does not necessarily constrain several runs in a day; and a spending limit does not prevent overheating or excessive power draw.

Design the controls as separate layers, each with one job:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Per-event limit: bounds what one transaction, burn or epoch can consume.
  • Per-run budget: defines the maximum approved loss for one unattended session.
  • Rolling daily or lifetime cap: limits cumulative exposure across separate runs.
  • Hashrate ceiling: prevents the miner from exceeding the tested operating envelope.
  • Stop conditions: end work normally when a planned limit is reached and interrupt it when an unsafe or ambiguous condition occurs.

These controls should not be treated as interchangeable. For example, a lifetime cap may prevent cumulative overspend but still allow a single run to consume too much too quickly. A temperature threshold may protect hardware but does not limit fees or other spending. The purpose of layering is to make a single bug, duplicate action or missed alert less likely to become an unchecked loss.

How much should an autonomous miner be allowed to spend?

Choose a maximum loss for one unattended run first, then set smaller limits for each transaction or epoch and a separate cumulative cap across runs. The exact amounts must come from your own risk tolerance and deployment; the reviewed software documentation does not establish universal numeric defaults.

Set the per-run budget as the session’s loss ceiling

Sova documents --budget-zat as a cap for one mine run, and --lifetime-budget-zat as an optional cap across runs. The two caps apply independently. Its documented run behavior stops after the run budget or maximum-epoch condition, after handling burns that are already in flight. Treat the per-run budget as the amount you have explicitly approved the process to lose before a person reviews the result—not as a target to spend.

Before choosing a value, decide what the process is authorized to do while unattended and how long it may run before you can inspect it. The per-run cap should fit that authorization. If the task is a brief test, its cap should reflect the test’s limited scope; if the process is intended to continue across sessions, the lifetime or rolling cap should bound the cumulative amount, not merely defer the same exposure to the next run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make each transaction or epoch smaller than the run allowance

A smaller event-level limit helps contain a loop that repeatedly submits work. Do not let one event consume the entire amount authorized for a session if the miner may make several attempts or epochs. Set the event limit and run budget independently so the event cap remains useful even if the run is otherwise allowed to continue.

Where an external policy layer is available, add a rolling daily limit and a pause switch. The orbserv controls documented for this purpose include dailyLimit, maxPerTx and paused. A daily limit addresses cumulative activity over a calendar policy window; a pause control provides a way to stop further activity while investigating. Confirm how the policy layer defines its window and whether the miner can bypass it before relying on either control.

Account for spending that is outside a miner’s own budget

A miner’s internal budget may not describe total cost in dollars. APOW cautions that default x402 limits are not a complete USD loss cap: mint value, gas, swaps, exchange-rate changes and hosting are separate components. If you need a total-cost ceiling, identify which of those costs the miner can enforce and which must be constrained elsewhere. Do not assume that a token-denominated cap will remain equal to the same dollar value as exchange rates change.

Keep a reserve and use a finite test duration when the end-to-end cost controls have not been validated. APOW specifically recommends both; it also warns against promising a hard dollar stop from an untested watcher. A watcher or policy layer should be considered a protection only after its actual behavior has been checked, including what it does if it cannot determine transaction status.

What hashrate cap should you set?

Set the ceiling from supervised measurements on the exact rig and configuration you intend to run, not from a generic number. The applicable envelope includes the hardware, algorithm, firmware, power supply, cooling, and the pool or chain conditions involved.

For owned hardware, HashCore’s documented controls cover temperature, hashrate and power thresholds, along with restart on low hashrate and chain-integrity checks. Use those controls to define the tested boundary and a margin below it, rather than operating continuously at the highest observed rate. A short peak does not establish that the rig can sustain that rate safely. The numeric ceiling should reflect what the complete setup maintained under supervision, with headroom for variation.

Hashrate also depends on what kind of mining arrangement you are limiting. NiceHash describes orders with an amount to spend, a price per hash and an optional approximate maximum hashrate. For purchased capacity, constrain both money and rate: a spending allowance alone does not define how much hashing capacity is being ordered, while a rate limit alone does not define the resulting spend. Treat an approximate marketplace limit as distinct from a guaranteed exact rate.

There is no universal hashrate figure in the reviewed sources. A number that is safe for one rig, algorithm or cooling system cannot be transferred to another without measurements. Likewise, a threshold chosen for owned hardware should not be assumed to describe purchased marketplace capacity.

When should mining software stop normally?

Normal stop conditions should be planned limits, not emergencies. Configure the miner to stop when its approved budget is exhausted, its maximum epoch count is reached, or a finite test duration expires.

  • Budget exhausted: end the run once its authorized spending allowance is consumed.
  • Maximum epochs reached: end a bounded run even if budget remains.
  • Test duration elapsed: stop a test at its planned end instead of leaving it open-ended.

These give the run a defined stopping point even when no fault is detected. If the software has an in-flight operation at the stopping boundary, use its documented handling behavior; Sova says its run stops after handling burns in flight when the budget or maximum-epoch condition is met. Do not silently assume that another miner handles outstanding work the same way.

What should trigger an emergency shutdown?

Emergency stops should cover conditions that make continued operation unsafe, ineffective or impossible to assess. Configure them separately from budget and duration limits, and make sure they stop new work rather than allowing the process to retry indefinitely.

  • Critical temperature: interrupt operation when the rig reaches the temperature threshold chosen for its actual hardware and cooling.
  • Excessive power: stop if power use crosses the deployment’s safe limit.
  • Sustained low hashrate: halt or pause when performance remains below the chosen threshold, rather than treating a brief fluctuation as a reason for unlimited restarts.
  • Chain or hardware faults: stop on broken chain or board integrity, or other faults that undermine valid operation.
  • Abnormal startup or runtime state: pause when the software begins or continues in an unexpected state that the operator cannot explain.
  • Unknown transaction or payment status: pause new submissions and reconcile the result before proceeding.

HashCore’s listed controls include temperature, hashrate and power thresholds, low-hashrate restart and chain-integrity checks. A restart can be useful for a recoverable interruption, but it is not a substitute for an emergency stop: if the underlying condition persists, repeated restarts can keep the system operating in an unsafe or unproductive state. Define when the process should stop for operator review rather than restart again.

What should happen when a transaction result is unknown?

Pause and reconcile; do not send unlimited retries. If a payment or transaction may have succeeded but the software cannot confirm its state, retrying can produce duplicate spending or work. The next action should depend on establishing the prior action’s status, not on an assumption that an unanswered request failed.

This is also why a transaction cap and a retry policy belong together. The cap bounds a successful individual action, but repeated attempts can still accumulate costs unless the run and rolling limits constrain them. Set an explicit policy for ambiguous results: stop issuing new work, inspect the relevant transaction or payment state through the system’s normal process, and resume only after the state is understood. The reviewed APOW guidance specifically recommends pausing on an unknown payment or transaction result.

How can you check whether the limits work together?

Review the configuration as a control system rather than a collection of unrelated settings. For every limit, identify its scope, what event activates it, whether it can be bypassed by a restart or another process, and what happens next.

  1. Write down the authorized exposure. Record the per-event amount, per-run maximum and daily or lifetime cap, and identify which component enforces each one.
  2. Bound the hardware or purchased capacity. For a rig, use supervised measurements from the exact configuration to choose hashrate, temperature and power boundaries with headroom. For purchased capacity, constrain both spend and approximate maximum rate.
  3. Choose ordinary endpoints. Configure budget exhaustion, maximum epochs and finite test-duration expiry as normal stop conditions.
  4. Define emergency behavior. Set the critical thermal, power, sustained low-hashrate, chain-integrity and hardware-fault conditions that require a pause or stop.
  5. Specify ambiguous-state handling. Decide how an unknown payment or transaction result is reconciled before any retry or new work is allowed.
  6. Check enforcement boundaries. Determine whether limits live only inside the miner process or also in an external policy layer. Confirm that a second process, restart or separate run cannot defeat the intended cumulative limit.
  7. Start with a finite supervised test. Verify that the observed spending, rate and shutdown behavior match the policy before allowing unattended operation.

Use this as a comparison checklist when evaluating candidate configurations:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • How much can one event consume?
  • What bounds cumulative exposure per run and across runs?
  • What is the maximum tested hashrate, and what thermal and power headroom remains?
  • Which normal stop conditions are enforced?
  • Which emergency conditions trigger a pause or shutdown?
  • Does an unknown transaction state cause reconciliation or another attempt?
  • Are limits enforced outside the miner process as well as inside it?

The important distinction is not simply how many settings a tool exposes. It is whether each limit has a clear scope and whether the combined system remains bounded when a process restarts, repeats work or loses visibility into a transaction.

What can duplicate work reveal about a missing control?

A Sova project keeper reported 1,441 burns in 5.6 hours on 2026-09-27, about 1.85 TAZ per day, with 17% being doubles that sealed nothing. This is a dated example, not a universal or current burn rate. It illustrates why an operator should examine burn intervals, duplicate-work behavior and spend caps together: a loop can consume resources without producing useful results.

When assessing a similar report from your own miner, distinguish total activity from productive work. A high count alone does not show that the work succeeded; a duplicate rate, failed seals or low sustained hashrate may indicate that the system should pause for investigation. The run budget limits the possible cost while that behavior is being diagnosed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Sova say the caps are only as good as state.json?

Sova’s documentation says, “The caps are only as good as state.json.” That makes the integrity and continuity of the state used to track limits relevant: a cap cannot reliably account for prior activity if its tracking state is missing, stale or inconsistent.

Can two miners run on the same key?

Sova’s documentation warns, “The same goes for running two miners on one key.” Treat shared-key concurrency as a limit-accounting risk: separate processes may act against the same authorization without a single process seeing the other’s activity.

Does a mining budget guarantee a fixed dollar loss limit?

Not necessarily. APOW notes that mint value, gas, swaps, exchange-rate changes and hosting can sit outside default x402 limits, so a token or transaction cap alone should not be described as a complete USD ceiling.

Why can a miner spend without sealing useful work?

The Sova project keeper’s 2026-09-27 report counted doubles that sealed nothing among its burns. Duplicate work can consume resources without producing a successful result, so activity counts should be evaluated alongside whether work actually seals.
