Buy a new VPS with root or sudo access, a supported Ubuntu release, at least 2 GB of RAM, and public access to ports 80 and 443. That is the installation floor for Easypanel. For a production application that also builds code, runs a database, stores logs, and keeps backups, starting with more memory and CPU is safer. You can install Easypanel yourself on a standard VPS or deploy a provider’s marketplace image; the VPS bill and any Easypanel subscription are separate.
This guide explains what to purchase, how to install the panel, how to estimate the real monthly cost, and which operating responsibilities remain yours after the dashboard is running.

The baseline is a fresh Ubuntu server with at least 2 GB of RAM and free ports 80 and 443. Easypanel’s installer also needs root or sudo privileges, a public IP address, and a server that is not already running another web service on those ports.
| Requirement | What to buy or configure | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Fresh, supported Ubuntu installation; Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is specified for Akamai’s one-click deployment. | The installation scripts and marketplace images target supported Linux distributions. |
| Memory | 2 GB RAM minimum; more for applications, databases, builds, and monitoring. | The minimum allows installation, but application workloads compete with Docker and panel services. |
| Privileges | Root login or a sudo-capable administrator account. | The installer installs Docker, initializes Docker Swarm, and creates system services. |
| Network ports | Inbound ports 80 and 443 available; allow 3000 temporarily if your provider’s setup requires panel access there. | HTTP, HTTPS, routing, and certificate issuance depend on 80 and 443. A marketplace deployment may expose the panel on 3000 initially. |
| Storage | SSD or NVMe with capacity for the operating system, container images, persistent volumes, logs, and backups. | Disk consumption grows as you deploy services and retain data. |
| Public networking | Static or persistent public IPv4/IPv6, firewall controls, and reverse-DNS options if available. | Domains, TLS certificates, administration, and reliable service access require predictable networking. |
Do not reuse a server that already hosts Nginx, Apache, Caddy, another control panel, or containers you cannot remove. Competing processes can bind the web ports or alter Docker configuration, producing failures that are harder to diagnose than a clean rebuild.

Should you use a generic VPS or a one-click Easypanel image?
Both approaches run the same panel. A generic VPS gives you control over the installation and operating system; a marketplace image saves setup time but may apply provider-specific defaults that you still need to review.
| Purchase path | Best for | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Generic VPS plus manual installation | Administrators who want a clean, repeatable build. | Choose the Ubuntu version, disk layout, firewall, region, and recovery plan yourself. The official installer is transparent and can be rerun on a rebuilt server. | You must harden the host, configure DNS, and validate Docker and firewall settings. |
| Provider marketplace image | People who prefer a guided deployment. | The image can preconfigure Easypanel and its dependencies. A provider may expose an initial panel URL immediately after creation. | Image versions and network rules vary. You still own updates, credentials, backups, and application configuration. |
| Easypanel-focused VPS listing | Buyers who want a plan marketed specifically for the panel. | Resources are presented in panel-oriented sizes, making comparison easier. | The panel may not be preinstalled, and the software license remains a separate charge. |
Providers with marketplace or preconfigured options include DigitalOcean, AWS, Vultr, Linode, Kamatera, Cloudzy, and LetsCloud, among others in Easypanel’s provider directory. Availability, image version, regions, and pricing change, so verify the deployment screen before paying.

How much RAM, CPU, storage, and bandwidth should you choose?
Use 2 GB only as an installation floor. Size the server for everything that will run beside Easypanel, not for the panel alone.
2 GB RAM: installation and very light use
A 2 GB instance can install the panel and host a small, low-traffic service when builds and databases are modest. Leave headroom for Docker, system updates, temporary build layers, and log rotation. If memory pressure causes the kernel to kill containers, adding swap may prevent abrupt failures, but swap is not a substitute for adequate RAM.
4 GB RAM: a practical small-production starting point
When one VPS builds application images, runs an application and database, and performs backups, 4 GB is a more comfortable starting point than the minimum. One vendor example lists 4 GB RAM with 2 vCPUs as its next tier; treat that as a product offering, not a universal capacity guarantee. Actual capacity depends on language runtime, database size, concurrency, and build behavior.

8 GB and above: multiple services or heavier databases
Move to 8 GB or more when you expect several always-on services, background workers, search indexes, staging environments, or frequent concurrent builds. Separate a database onto its own instance when its memory needs or recovery requirements could affect the web workloads.
Choosing CPU, disk, and transfer
- CPU: vCPUs affect image builds, compression, compilation, and request throughput. A fast single-threaded workload may benefit more from higher per-core performance than from many cores.
- NVMe or SSD: choose enough space for images, persistent volumes, database growth, logs, and at least one local recovery copy. Local disk is not an off-server backup.
- Bandwidth: estimate visitor traffic, container image pulls, backups, and software updates. Check whether the provider limits transfer or charges overages.
- Region: place the VPS near most users and any external database or API dependencies. Latency often matters more than a small difference in monthly price.
How do you install Easypanel on a self-managed VPS?
On a clean Ubuntu server, the documented installation is a short root command. The script installs Docker when needed, initializes Docker Swarm, and starts Easypanel.
- Create the server: select a supported Ubuntu image, allocate at least 2 GB RAM, attach a public IP, and record the provider’s recovery and console access.
- Connect securely: sign in over SSH with your administrator account. Prefer SSH keys, disable password login after testing the key, and avoid sharing the root password.
- Confirm the host is clean: check that no existing web server or control panel is listening on ports 80 or 443. Remove conflicting software or rebuild the instance.
- Update the operating system: apply the provider’s current Ubuntu security updates and reboot if the kernel requires it.
- Open only required firewall rules: allow SSH from your administration addresses and allow 80 and 443 for web traffic. If your marketplace workflow requires port 3000 for first access, restrict it to your own address and close it after setup.
- Run the installer as root: switch to a root shell with
sudo -i, then runcurl -sSL https://get.easypanel.io | sh. Review the terminal output for errors instead of disconnecting while packages and Docker are configured. - Finish the first-run setup: open the address shown by the installer, create the administrator account, and set a unique password. If the provider supplied a temporary panel URL or port, follow its handoff instructions and then put the panel behind your intended access controls.
- Point DNS and issue TLS: create the required A or AAAA records for your application domain, wait for propagation, and use Easypanel’s domain and certificate controls. Keep 80 and 443 reachable so certificate validation and renewals work.
- Deploy a test service: launch a small container, verify logs, health status, domain routing, and HTTPS renewal behavior, then remove the test if it is not needed.
Easypanel also documents a Docker-first installation path. If Docker is already installed, confirm that its version and daemon configuration are supported before running the panel installer; an unusual existing Docker setup can be more difficult to repair than a fresh host.
Is Easypanel included with the VPS?
Usually not. A marketplace image may bundle the installation workflow, but the infrastructure provider still bills the VPS and Easypanel licenses one server at a time.
| Easypanel plan | Published price | Notable limits or additions |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 forever | Up to 3 projects, unlimited services and deployments, and basic monitoring; no credit card required. |
| Hobby | $10.9 per server/month | Unlimited projects, advanced monitoring, notifications, database backups, and a custom service domain. |
| Growth | $16.9 per server/month | Adds multiple users and access control. |
| Business | $29.9 per server/month | Adds cluster support (alpha), white-labeling, and priority support. |
One license covers one server, whether that server is a virtual machine, node, or instance. Running a second VPS for staging, failover, or a separate database generally requires another license if you use a paid plan there. Confirm current prices and plan terms at purchase time because software pricing can change independently of VPS rates.

What does a realistic monthly budget look like?
Calculate infrastructure and panel fees separately, then add backups and any paid traffic or support. As a concrete vendor example, LightNode lists a 2 GB RAM, 1 vCPU, 50 GB NVMe, 1 TB bandwidth plan at $7.71 per month; its page says buyers install Easypanel themselves and pay panel licenses separately.
- Infrastructure: VPS compute, storage, public IP, transfer, snapshots, and provider backups.
- Panel: $0 for the Free plan or the applicable per-server Hobby, Growth, or Business fee.
- Operations: off-server backup storage, monitoring, transactional email, DNS services, and occasional recovery testing.
- Overages: additional transfer, block storage, snapshot retention, or support charges under the provider’s terms.
Hourly billing can be useful for testing and short-lived environments, while monthly reservations may reduce cost for an always-on production server. Compare the total at the same resource size and region rather than comparing headline CPU prices alone.
Which provider factors matter beyond the advertised price?
Choose the provider that gives you a recoverable, supportable server, not merely the lowest monthly number.
- Installation method: verify whether you receive a clean image, a maintained marketplace image, or a managed service with restrictions.
- Root and firewall control: confirm that you can administer Ubuntu, configure security groups, and open or restrict 80, 443, and SSH.
- Recovery tools: check snapshot consistency, image restoration, console access, and the time required to rebuild in another region.
- Backup model: determine whether backups are provider-managed, how long they are retained, and whether you can download or replicate them off-site.
- Network quality: compare region, IPv4 availability, latency to users, transfer limits, and any egress pricing.
- Support coverage: identify whether support handles only the hypervisor and network or also the operating system and marketplace image.
- Billing: compare hourly and monthly rates, storage add-ons, taxes, renewal pricing, and cancellation rules.
What remains your responsibility after installation?
“Self-managed” means Easypanel simplifies deployments, domains, SSL, logs, monitoring, and service management, but you operate the underlying host and applications.
Security and access
- Apply Ubuntu and Docker security updates on a schedule.
- Use SSH keys, least-privilege accounts, and a restricted firewall; expose only services that must be public.
- Store panel credentials and recovery codes in a password manager.
- Treat Easypanel API keys as administrative secrets. They can modify or delete resources allowed to the key’s user; revoke any key that may have been exposed.
Data protection
- Back up databases and persistent volumes to storage outside the VPS account or region.
- Encrypt backup data and test restoration on a separate instance.
- Define retention periods so logs and backups do not silently consume the application disk.
Operations
- Monitor memory, CPU, disk, inode usage, container health, certificate expiry, and backup success.
- Document DNS records, environment variables, deployment steps, and emergency contacts.
- Prepare a rebuild procedure: provider console access, Ubuntu image selection, Easypanel installation, DNS changes, and data restoration.
What common installation problems occur, and how do you fix them?
The installer reports insufficient memory
Verify the VPS’s actual RAM rather than its advertised burst amount. Stop unnecessary services, add memory, or rebuild at a larger size; swap can reduce short spikes but will not make a severely undersized server reliable.

Port 80 or 443 is already in use
Identify the process listening on the port, remove the conflicting web server, or rebuild from a clean image. Do not leave two reverse proxies competing for the same address.
The panel is unreachable
Check the provider firewall, the Ubuntu firewall, the server’s public IP, and DNS separately. A marketplace deployment may initially use port 3000, while normal application routing uses 80 and 443; restrict temporary access and then follow the provider’s completion steps.
HTTPS certificates fail
Confirm that DNS resolves to the VPS, port 80 is reachable from the internet, and no proxy or security group blocks the certificate authority. Wait for DNS propagation before repeatedly requesting certificates.
Containers restart or builds fail
Inspect service logs and host memory and disk metrics. Frequent out-of-memory events indicate that the workload needs more RAM or fewer concurrent services; failed image builds often need additional CPU, temporary disk space, or a corrected build configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When is a marketplace image the better choice?
Choose a marketplace image when speed and a provider-supported path matter more than controlling every installation detail. Choose manual installation when you need a documented, repeatable build, a specific Ubuntu version, or a standard configuration that can be recreated across providers.

How do you decide which plan to buy today?
For a first experiment, a 2 GB VPS and Easypanel Free satisfy the documented installation requirements. For a small production app with a database and backups on the same machine, start above the minimum—4 GB is a reasonable vendor example—and budget for off-server backups and a paid panel plan only if its features are needed. Move to more CPU, memory, storage, or a second server when monitoring shows a sustained bottleneck or when separating failure domains is more valuable than keeping costs low.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I move Easypanel to another VPS later?
Yes, but migration is an operations project rather than a simple account transfer. Provision a clean destination, install the panel, recreate services and domains, copy persistent data, lower DNS TTL ahead of the move, test the restored application, and switch records only after validation.
Does Easypanel replace Ubuntu system administration?
No. It manages many container and deployment tasks, but you still patch the host, secure SSH and firewalls, monitor disk and memory, manage provider snapshots, and recover the server when the operating system or network fails.
Do I need a domain name before installing Easypanel?
No. You can complete installation and access the panel through its initial address, then connect domains when you are ready to publish applications. A domain becomes necessary for convenient named access and normal automated TLS certificates.
Can one Easypanel server host staging and production?
It can, provided the server has enough resources and you isolate projects, credentials, databases, and deployment workflows. Separate servers are safer when staging experiments could consume resources or when production needs an independent failure and recovery boundary.
