For a wireless headset on PS5, start by choosing it as the Output Device, then decide whether the console should switch to it automatically. After that, set Output to Headphones, choose stereo or headphone 3D audio, adjust volume, and verify the microphone input. EQ presets and sidetone are optional: they change the sound or monitoring experience, but there is no universally best choice. The exact controls shown can vary with the connected headset and its connection method, so confirm that your model is supported before troubleshooting advanced settings.
Which PS5 settings should you change first for a wireless headset?
The essential changes are the output route, automatic switching, headphone output selection, volume, and microphone input. Work through them in that order so you know whether a problem is caused by routing, level, or the headset itself.
| Setting | PS5 path | What it controls | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Output Device | Settings > Sound > Audio Output | The device receiving PS5 audio | Available choices depend on the connected hardware. |
| Switch Output Device Automatically | Settings > Sound > Audio Output | Whether PS5 changes output when an audio device connects | Leave it off if you want to select the output manually. |
| Output to Headphones | Settings > Sound > Audio Output | Which audio is sent through the headset | The correct choice depends on whether you need game sound, chat, or both. |
| Headphone 3D Audio | Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones) | Stereo versus virtual 3D presentation and profile | Preference and headset response differ between listeners. |
| Headphone Volume | Settings > Sound > Volume, or Control Center > Sound | Listening level | Independent of microphone level. |
| Microphone Input Device and Level | Control Center > Mic | Which microphone is active and how strongly it registers | Sidetone support varies by headset. |
| EQ Presets | Settings > Sound > EQ Presets (supported headsets) | Sound profiles and custom modes | Not every headset exposes these controls. |
How do I select the wireless headset as the PS5 output device?
Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output, select Output Device, and choose the connected headset. Play a known game or system sound while making the change; the audio should move to the headset immediately when the device is recognized.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
In the same menu, review Switch Output Device Automatically. Turn it on if you want PS5 to move audio to the headset whenever it connects. Turn it off if you regularly use speakers or a television and prefer to choose the destination yourself. Automatic switching is convenient, but it can make the console appear to “lose” sound when a headset reconnects or when its wireless adapter is detected.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the headset is absent from the list, do not assume a menu setting will fix it. Confirm that the transmitter, USB receiver, or other connection is seated, powered, and attached to the PS5 before changing software options.
What does “Output to Headphones” do?
Output to Headphones determines which audio channels the headset receives. Check this setting when game audio is audible but chat is missing, when chat works but game sound is routed to the television, or when audio seems to be going to an unexpected destination.
There is no single option that is right for every setup. Select the option that matches what you want to hear through the headset, then test both a game and a voice-chat source. If your headset has its own game/chat mixer, make sure that control is not turned fully toward one channel after the console route is corrected.
Should I enable 3D audio for headphones?
PS5 lets you enable headphone 3D audio, create a personalized profile, or choose from five presets. Whether it sounds better is listener- and headset-dependent, so compare it with ordinary stereo using the same game and volume rather than treating 3D as a mandatory upgrade.

How to create a personalized profile
- Open Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones).
- Enable 3D audio for headphones.
- Start the personalization process and listen to the test sounds presented at different positions and angles.
- Save the profile that makes the positions easiest for you to distinguish.
The profile is based on how the sounds reach you during the setup exercise. If the result is distracting, switch to one of the five presets or disable headphone 3D audio and return to stereo.
How to choose between stereo and 3D
Use a familiar game with clear front, rear, and side cues. Stereo may sound more natural for music or games mixed primarily for two channels, while 3D may give a stronger sense of height or direction in content designed for spatial playback. Sony describes 3D audio as an immersive feature, but that description is product guidance, not independent evidence that one profile improves competitive performance for every player.
How should I set headphone volume and sidetone?
Set listening level under Settings > Sound > Volume, or open the Control Center, choose Sound, and adjust headphone volume there. Make the change while a representative game or chat session is playing so you do not compensate for a quiet source by setting the headset uncomfortably loud.
Sidetone is the level of your own voice fed back into the headset. A small amount can prevent you from speaking too loudly because the earcups block outside sound. It does not change what other players hear. Sony notes that sidetone is unavailable on some headsets; if the control is missing, the limitation is likely the headset rather than a hidden PS5 switch.

How do I configure the wireless headset microphone?
Open the Control Center, select Mic, and confirm the intended Input Device. Speak at your normal distance and adjust microphone level until the input indicator reaches the console’s Good range without consistently hitting the maximum.
Set a safer default at login
For privacy, set microphone status at login to Mute if you do not want the microphone live whenever you sign in. You can also enable Switch to Mute When Voice Chat or Broadcasting Starts when you want a muted default during those activities. Remember that a physical mute button or flip-to-mute boom can override the console state, so check both when other players cannot hear you.
Separate microphone problems from chat-routing problems
If the input meter does not react, troubleshoot the microphone, receiver, or mute control. If the meter reacts but other players still cannot hear you, check the chat application, party privacy, and whether the headset’s own mute control is engaged. Do not raise headphone volume to solve a microphone-level problem; PS5 controls those levels separately.
Which PS5 EQ preset should I use?
On supported PlayStation headsets, EQ Presets can include Standard, Bass Boost, and Shooter. The console also provides sliders for custom Audio Mode 1, Audio Mode 2, and Audio Mode 3. Treat these as sound profiles, not performance guarantees.

Use the presets as starting points
- Standard: a neutral reference for checking whether a change is actually helping.
- Bass Boost: emphasizes low frequencies; it can make effects fuller but may mask quieter details.
- Shooter: a game-oriented profile; its result depends on the game mix and the headset.
Preview a profile with the same game, then keep the one that makes dialogue, effects, or music easiest for you to follow. If none works, adjust one slider at a time in a custom mode and keep a note of the original values so you can undo the experiment. Because hearing, headset tuning, and game mixes differ, a universal “best” EQ cannot be established from the console menus alone.
Does every wireless or Bluetooth headset work with PS5?
No. “Wireless” does not mean “Bluetooth-compatible with PS5.” PlayStation’s compatibility guidance says third-party Bluetooth wireless headsets are not supported, while many USB and analog headsets are supported. The same guidance warns that not all devices work with the console and directs buyers to the headset manufacturer for model-specific information.
That guidance appears in a 2020 PlayStation FAQ, so treat it as broad official direction rather than a guarantee for every later headset or firmware revision. Before buying or troubleshooting, verify the exact model, whether it uses a PS5-compatible USB transmitter, and whether the manufacturer lists PS5 support for that connection method. A generic USB adapter is not automatically compatible with every wireless headset.
| Connection description | What to verify | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| USB wireless receiver or transmitter | Manufacturer’s PS5 compatibility statement and required USB port or adapter | That every USB wireless product will be detected. |
| Bluetooth wireless | Whether the exact headset and an approved transmitter arrangement are supported | That PS5 accepts ordinary third-party Bluetooth audio directly. |
| Analog connection | Whether the headset is connected to a supported controller or console audio jack | That an analog headset will provide every wireless-style feature, such as console-controlled sidetone. |
Why is my PS5 headset not switching audio?
Check the problem in this order:
- Reconnect or power-cycle the headset and its receiver, then confirm the receiver is detected by the PS5.
- Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and select the headset under Output Device.
- Decide whether Switch Output Device Automatically should be enabled; if it is disabled, select the headset manually after each connection.
- Inspect Output to Headphones if only game or only chat audio is present.
- Use Control Center > Sound to raise headphone volume, then use Control Center > Mic to verify the input device and microphone meter.
- Test with another supported audio source or game. If the headset never appears, consult the manufacturer’s PS5 compatibility information rather than repeatedly changing EQ or 3D settings.
Menu labels and available controls can vary with connected hardware and configuration. A missing EQ, sidetone, or chat/game option may therefore be a capability difference, not a damaged console.

What headset controls are model-specific?
Some headsets duplicate PS5 functions with physical controls. For example, the PULSE 3D manual describes dedicated controls for microphone mute, mic monitoring, and chat/game balance. Its manual also notes that some games may not support the CHAT/GAME function. This is a model-specific example, not a promise that every headset offers those controls or that every game responds to them.
When a physical control and a console control seem to disagree, test each separately: set a known PS5 value, then move the headset dial or button through its range. The control that changes the audible result identifies which layer is active.
What is a reliable setup sequence before playing?
- Connect the headset using the manufacturer’s specified PS5 method.
- Select it under Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Output Device.
- Choose whether automatic switching suits your routine.
- Set Output to Headphones for the channels you need.
- Compare stereo with headphone 3D audio and save a profile only if you prefer its presentation.
- Set a comfortable headphone volume and optional sidetone.
- Confirm the microphone input, reach the Good level, and choose your mute-at-login preference.
- Preview EQ only after routing and levels work, then keep or customize a profile by preference.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a headset’s own mute button instead of the PS5 mute setting?
Yes, when the headset provides a hardware mute control, but the physical state can override what the console menu shows. Check the button, boom position, and the Control Center microphone state together when speech is not transmitted.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why is the sidetone option missing from my PS5?
Sidetone is not available for every headset. The absence of that control generally reflects headset support, so changing 3D audio or EQ will not add it.
Should I change EQ before testing 3D audio?
No. First establish a working output route and comfortable volume, then compare stereo and 3D audio with a consistent profile. Changing EQ at the same time makes it difficult to tell which adjustment changed the sound.
What should I check on a headset listing before I buy it for PS5?
Look for explicit PS5 support for the exact model and connection method, especially if the product is described only as Bluetooth or wireless. If the manufacturer does not document compatibility, the console’s support guidance is not a guarantee that it will work.
