For PS5 emulation, start by checking that your CPU supports the emulator’s required instruction set and core configuration, then confirm your GPU supports Vulkan and plan for about 16 GB of dual-channel RAM. Those are compatibility starting points from emulator projects, not a proven ranking of what delivers the highest frame rate. Emulator maturity and whether a particular game works can matter more than upgrading any one part.
Is there one PC component that matters most?
No dependable, universal CPU-versus-GPU ranking is established for PS5 emulation. The published requirements from shadPS5 and RPCS5 specify supported features and hardware baselines, but neither provides controlled comparisons showing how particular components affect performance. Treat the guidance as a way to check whether a PC meets a project’s stated requirements—not as a frame-rate guarantee.
For a prospective build or upgrade, compare hardware against the exact emulator you intend to use, then check that project’s game compatibility information. A powerful PC cannot make a game playable if the emulator does not yet support it.
Which PC hardware should you check?
CPU: check instruction support and core guidance
The shadPS5 FAQ names an AVX2-capable CPU. RPCS5 lists an x64 Intel or AMD 8-core processor as its minimum and recommends 8 cores/16 threads or more, with newer Intel and AMD generations. Its system guide says most PS5 x86-64 guest code can execute natively on x86-64 host CPUs. These are project-specific requirements and explanations; they do not establish that a given processor will hit a particular frame rate.

GPU: Vulkan support comes before a performance-tier guess
Vulkan-compatible graphics are specified by both projects. shadPS5 gives the GTX 1060 and RX 560 as examples of a minimum GPU, while noting that its estimates may change. RPCS5 lists older and newer GPU families for its minimum and recommended tiers. These are not controlled comparisons between graphics cards, and the cited guidance does not promise that a card at a listed tier will run a specific game well.
For shadPS5, see its hardware FAQ; for RPCS5, consult its system requirements. SharpEmu’s reported graphics-translation work likewise does not establish a general GPU buying tier.

RAM: use 16 GB as a baseline, not a guarantee
shadPS5 specifies 16 GB of RAM. RPCS5 calls 8 GB its absolute minimum and recommends 16 GB or more in a dual-channel configuration. RPCS5’s system guide describes the PS5’s 16 GB of GDDR6 as shared by the CPU and GPU; that does not mean adding host RAM by itself will improve compatibility or frame rate.
Storage: relevant to setup, but not shown to be the main bottleneck
RPCS5 recommends an SSD for the emulator and allows an SSD or HDD for games. Its system-settings guidance says to enable the decompression cache when the emulator is on an SSD, and warns that the cache can worsen streaming hitches on a mechanical drive. These are project-specific setup recommendations, not comparative evidence that storage is the leading performance constraint.

What should you compare before choosing or upgrading parts?

Why game compatibility can outweigh a hardware upgrade
Emulator development remains a major constraint. The shadPS5 FAQ says games are not yet playable on that project, and RPCS5 warns that its early-stage state may cause improper operation or prevent games from booting. These statements apply to those named projects, not every PS5 emulator.
In a report dated September 27, 2026, Tom’s Hardware said 12 of 55 titles tested with SharpEmu reached gameplay, and six were designated playable at 60 FPS. The report also cautioned that those six had not been tested from start to finish. That snapshot describes SharpEmu’s reported results at that time; it is not a universal PS5-emulation benchmark or proof of performance on other projects.

Accordingly, check the emulator’s current game-specific status before spending money on an upgrade. SharpEmu is described in the report as an experimental project intended for research and educational purposes, rather than a guarantee of broad game support.

A practical order for checking a PC
- Pick the emulator and game. Look up the project’s current compatibility information for the title you want to run.
- Verify the CPU. Check whether it supports the required instruction set, such as AVX2 where specified, and compare its core configuration with that project’s guidance.
- Verify the GPU API. Confirm Vulkan support first; treat named minimum cards as project estimates, not performance promises.
- Check memory capacity and channels. Use 16 GB as the common published target and, for RPCS5, note its dual-channel recommendation.
- Consider storage after compatibility. Follow the emulator’s SSD and cache instructions for your drive type rather than assuming a storage upgrade will solve game-specific problems.
