Final Fantasy XIV is the best choice for a mixed-platform group. Square Enix officially supports Windows, Mac, Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2, and its Lodestone manual says players who share a Home World can play together regardless of platform. The Elder Scrolls Online supports PC/Mac, PlayStation and Xbox, but places each platform family on a separate megaserver, so those communities cannot play together. World of Warcraft is documented in the reviewed Blizzard materials as a Windows-and-macOS game installed through Battle.net, with no native console version identified. That makes WoW suitable when everyone uses a computer, ESO suitable when everyone uses the same console family or PC/Mac, and FFXIV the practical answer when friends are divided among PC, PlayStation and Xbox.

Which game lets PC and console players play together?
Final Fantasy XIV is the only clear choice among these three for a group that needs native PC-to-console play. Its official manual explicitly allows players sharing a Home World to play together regardless of the platform running the game.
Final Fantasy XIV: one game world across supported platforms
FFXIV’s cross-platform model is built around a shared service rather than isolated console editions. A Windows player, a Steam player, a PlayStation player and an Xbox Series player can join one another when they are on the same Home World. The Nintendo Switch 2 is also included in Square Enix’s current platform list, extending that mixed-platform option to Nintendo’s hardware.
“Cross-platform” still has boundaries. Characters belong to Home Worlds, and players on different Home Worlds may need World Visit or Data Center Travel to meet. Those systems operate within documented logical and physical data-center rules, so a group should choose its Home World deliberately instead of assuming every world and travel action is interchangeable.

The Elder Scrolls Online: multiple platforms, separate populations
ESO has versions for PC/Mac, Xbox and PlayStation, but those versions do not share a live player population. Official support describes a PC/Mac megaserver, an Xbox megaserver and a PlayStation megaserver. PC/Mac players cannot interact with console players, and PlayStation and Xbox players cannot interact with one another.
That means an ESO group must agree on a platform family before creating characters. Owning the game on two systems does not place those systems in the same social space; the megaserver boundary is the deciding factor.
World of Warcraft: computer-focused in the documented materials
Blizzard’s current system-requirements and account guides identify Windows and macOS environments and direct players to the Battle.net desktop app for Windows or Mac. They require broadband internet and a keyboard and mouse. The reviewed official materials do not identify a PlayStation or Xbox version, so WoW cannot be recommended for a group that requires a native console client.
What platforms does each MMO officially support?
The platform lists answer a different question from cross-play: a game can be sold on several systems without connecting those systems to one shared community.
World of Warcraft platforms and access
- Operating systems: Windows and macOS are listed in Blizzard’s current system requirements.
- Installation: Blizzard’s returning-player guidance sends Windows and Mac users to the Battle.net desktop app, where World of Warcraft is installed.
- Connection and controls: Blizzard specifies a broadband connection and a keyboard and mouse.
- Access: A current Blizzard article says WoW: Forever is accessed through Battle.net on Windows or Mac and is included with an active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time.
Because no console edition is identified in those sources, there is no documented PC-to-console community to compare with FFXIV’s or ESO’s.
Final Fantasy XIV platforms and account conditions
Square Enix’s support FAQ lists PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Nintendo Switch 2, Windows, Mac and Steam. This is the broadest platform footprint in the comparison.
The official product information also lists platform-specific access conditions. Xbox access requires an active Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate plan. Nintendo Switch 2 users who already subscribe on another platform can receive a discounted Nintendo Switch 2 subscription. Those terms can vary by region and may change, so check the current Square Enix and Xbox listings before purchasing.

Playing across systems also depends on linking the required platform licenses to the appropriate Square Enix service account. Buying a second copy on another system is not, by itself, a guarantee that a character or subscription will be available there.
The Elder Scrolls Online platforms and megaservers
ESO supports PC/Mac, PlayStation and Xbox. Each platform family has its own megaserver, which is why the game can be called multi-platform while still denying cross-play between those families. The platform choice is therefore part of the group’s server choice, not merely a graphics or control preference.
What happens to characters and progress when you change platforms?
FFXIV’s linked service-account model is designed for supported platform access, while ESO explicitly does not share characters or progress between platforms. WoW has no documented native console edition in the reviewed materials, so a PC-to-console progression question does not arise for the versions covered here.
FFXIV: link the required licenses before expecting continuity
FFXIV supports the same service-account and platform model when the required platform licenses are linked. The practical check is whether the account owns the edition or access entitlement for each system you plan to use. Home World placement, rather than the hardware itself, determines where the character plays with friends.
ESO: account access is not character migration
ESO’s official support makes a sharp distinction between an account and its contents. One ESO account can be used across supported platform environments, but characters and progress are not shared between platforms. A character created on PC/Mac does not appear on PlayStation or Xbox, and a console character does not become a PC/Mac character simply because the same account credentials are used.
Customer service cannot transfer characters, gear, gold, crowns or items between platforms. If you move from PlayStation to Xbox, from console to PC, or in the opposite direction, plan on separate progression rather than a migration service.
WoW: no documented console progression path
Blizzard’s cited materials describe Battle.net access on Windows and Mac only. They therefore establish a computer-based account path, not a cross-save arrangement between PC and a console edition.

Are guilds and communities shared between platforms?
FFXIV can bring mixed-platform players into the same Home World community. ESO cannot unify PC/Mac, PlayStation and Xbox communities, and WoW’s documented ecosystem is limited to Windows and Mac.

FFXIV’s Home World rule
The Lodestone manual’s rule is unusually direct: players sharing a Home World can play together regardless of platform. That covers the central social activities a mixed group is trying to coordinate, while World Visit and Data Center Travel provide ways to meet players on other Home Worlds subject to their documented restrictions.
When creating characters, ask which Home World the group will use. The hardware question is settled by FFXIV’s cross-platform support; the remaining coordination question is world selection.
ESO’s megaserver boundaries
ESO’s three platform megaservers are separate communities. A PC/Mac guild cannot simply recruit an Xbox player into the same platform population, and PlayStation and Xbox players cannot interact with each other. The restriction affects more than dungeon matchmaking: it also determines who can share the same social environment and platform-specific economy.
WoW’s realm rules are a separate issue
WoW players remain within the desktop ecosystem described by Blizzard. Cross-platform console play is not documented, so the relevant planning question is which Windows or Mac players can join the same realm and activity rules, rather than how to bridge a console megaserver.
Are updates and content released at the same time?
ESO’s content is intended to match across platforms, but PC/Mac receives updates first. That creates a temporary patch gap in which console players may still be on the previous version. The reviewed material does not establish a cross-platform patch schedule for FFXIV or WoW, so no broader parity claim should be inferred.
What the ESO delay means for a group
When PC/Mac receives an update first, new features or content can be unavailable to console players until their platform patch arrives. The underlying game content is intended to be the same; the difference is timing, not a permanently different catalog. Groups that schedule around a launch should confirm that every member’s platform has received the required update.

Why patch parity is separate from cross-play
A game can support several platforms yet still release patches at different times, and a game can have synchronized patches without allowing those platforms to interact. Treat platform support, server population and update timing as three separate checks when planning a group.
What licenses or subscriptions should a mixed-platform group check?
Do not assume that buying the game once covers every system. FFXIV’s official product information calls out Xbox Game Pass and Nintendo Switch 2 subscription conditions, while WoW access is tied to an active subscription or Game Time through Battle.net. ESO requires a copy of the game for each platform you use, even though the account itself can be used across environments.

FFXIV purchase checks
- Confirm that the Square Enix service account has the required platform license for each system.
- For Xbox, verify that the account has an active Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate plan as specified by the product listing.
- For Nintendo Switch 2, check the current subscription terms, including any discounted rate for users who already subscribe on another platform.
- Verify regional availability and current terms before checkout; these commercial conditions are more volatile than the basic platform list.
ESO purchase checks
- Buy the appropriate game copy for every platform on which you intend to play.
- Do not treat account linking as a transfer of characters, items or currencies.
- Choose the platform family that contains the friends, guilds and communities you want to join.
WoW purchase checks
- Install through Battle.net on Windows or Mac.
- Maintain the active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time required for access.
- Plan around keyboard-and-mouse requirements and a broadband connection listed by Blizzard.
Which game should your group choose?
Use the platform decision first, then consider progression and patch timing. The following scenarios map the documented features to common groups.
Choose FFXIV when the group is split across PC, PlayStation and Xbox
FFXIV is the strongest fit when even one member plays on a different platform family. Its Home World rule explicitly supports mixed-platform play, and its official platform list is broader than either competitor’s. It also includes Nintendo Switch 2 in the current support information.
Before anyone creates a character, agree on a Home World and confirm the required licenses and platform subscriptions. That avoids a preventable situation in which everyone owns a supported copy but characters are scattered across worlds or an account lacks the entitlement for a second system.
Choose ESO when everyone is on PC/Mac, everyone is on Xbox, or everyone is on PlayStation
ESO works well for a single-platform-family group and offers the same intended game content across platforms. It is the wrong choice when the group expects PC/Mac, Xbox and PlayStation players to share one megaserver, or when a player needs a console character to follow them to PC.

Choose WoW when everyone is using Windows or Mac
WoW is the straightforward option for a computer-only group that wants Blizzard’s Battle.net ecosystem. The official materials reviewed here establish Windows and macOS support, broadband connectivity and keyboard-and-mouse input, but not a native console client. A console-based friend therefore needs a different game rather than a special WoW cross-play setting.
How we compared WoW, FFXIV and ESO
The ranking uses the factors that determine whether friends can actually play together:
- Platform coverage: Which operating systems and consoles have an official client?
- Cross-play: Can players on those systems enter the same world and interact?
- Progress portability: Does a character follow the player to another platform?
- Community structure: Are servers, guilds and social populations shared or separated?
- Patch parity: Do platform-specific release delays affect group access?
- Access conditions: Which licenses, subscriptions and account links are required?
On those criteria, FFXIV ranks first for mixed-platform groups, ESO ranks second for groups that stay within one platform family, and WoW ranks third for this particular cross-platform question because the cited official materials document only Windows and Mac.

Can FFXIV players on different Home Worlds meet without changing characters?
Yes. World Visit and Data Center Travel are the documented mechanisms for visiting players on other Home Worlds, although each system has its own restrictions. For the least friction, create the group’s characters on one agreed Home World from the start.
If I buy ESO on another platform, can customer service copy my character?
No. ESO support says characters, gear, gold, crowns and items cannot be transferred between platforms. The same account login does not merge the separate platform progress.
Will ESO console players eventually receive the same content as PC players?
ESO says the in-game content is intended to match on all platforms. PC/Mac patches arrive first, so consoles can temporarily remain on the previous version before their update is available.
Does World of Warcraft support playing with a gamepad on console?
The Blizzard requirements cited for WoW specify a keyboard and mouse and describe installation on Windows or Mac. They do not document a PlayStation or Xbox client in the materials covered here.
