PowerToys is a free, open-source set of Windows utilities for tasks such as arranging windows, remapping keys, launching apps, and working with files. The tools can be useful, but the available documentation does not establish that every utility was tested for a week or that any changed a particular person’s habits. Here is what the best candidates do, what to expect, and where their limits matter.
What PowerToys offers
Microsoft describes PowerToys as a collection of utilities for Windows power users and developers. Its catalog covers window management, app launching, input customization, file operations, text extraction, display and mouse tools, and workflow automation. The current catalog includes tools such as FancyZones, Keyboard Manager, PowerToys Run, Command Palette, Workspaces, PowerRename, Image Resizer, Text Extractor, and many others. Names and availability can change, so consult Microsoft’s current PowerToys overview.
It is free software, not a paid hardware bundle. That makes it reasonable to try a utility for a recurring annoyance, but the broad catalog does not mean every tool will suit every workflow.
How to install PowerToys on Windows 11 or Windows 10
Microsoft’s installation guide lists Windows 11 or Windows 10 version 2004 (20H1, build 19041) or newer, and a 64-bit x64 or ARM64 processor, as minimum requirements. The guide describes installation through Microsoft Store, GitHub, and package managers including WinGet, Chocolatey, and Scoop. Check the current PowerToys installation instructions for up-to-date requirements and steps. Microsoft says the setup bootstrapper installs the latest stable Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime if needed.

After installation, open PowerToys settings and enable only the utilities you want. General settings also include startup behavior, update controls, backup and restore, diagnostics, and a Quick Access flyout for toggling utilities. See Microsoft’s General settings documentation.
Which PowerToys utilities are useful for common tasks?
Keyboard Manager: fix a key or shortcut you use often
Keyboard Manager can remap individual keys, keyboard shortcuts, or inputs to Unicode text sequences. A practical example is changing a rarely used key to perform a frequently needed action, or creating an application-specific shortcut that suits your workflow. In Keyboard Manager, choose whether to remap a key or a shortcut, specify the original and replacement inputs, and select whether the mapping applies globally or only to a particular app. Remove or edit the mapping in the same settings page to undo it.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
PowerToys must remain running in the background for mappings to work. Windows-reserved combinations such as Win+L and Ctrl+Alt+Delete cannot be remapped, and Fn generally cannot be remapped either. Review the current Keyboard Manager documentation before relying on a mapping.
PowerToys Run: launch and calculate from the keyboard
PowerToys Run is a keyboard launcher, activated by Alt+Space by default. Its documented functions include launching apps and files, calculations, system commands, unit conversions, hashes, GUIDs, web searches, and plugins. It is most relevant if you prefer typing a command or app name over navigating menus. Like Keyboard Manager, it requires PowerToys to run in the background. Details are in the PowerToys Run documentation.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Command Palette: a separate launcher-style interface
Command Palette overlaps with Run in app- and command-launching workflows, but it is a distinct interface with a different default shortcut: Win+Alt+Space. Its overview lists app and command launching, file search, web browsing, clipboard history, Windows services and Registry access, Remote Desktop, system metrics, and PowerToys module access. Microsoft describes it as Run’s evolution toward version 2; that does not make the two interfaces identical. Check the Command Palette overview for its current status and documented features. That page was last updated August 25, 2026.
Workspaces: reopen a set of apps in saved positions
Workspaces captures an arrangement of applications and can launch them into saved positions, optionally using a shortcut. It can help when you regularly set up the same group of windows, but it is not an invisible restoration of a fully snapped desktop. Microsoft says apps may appear first and then move as Workspaces repositions them, and its FAQ says the mechanism does not include snapping capabilities. Directly pinning a workspace to the taskbar is not supported; a desktop shortcut can be pinned instead. See Microsoft’s Workspaces documentation.

How to decide what to keep enabled
Start with a repeated task, then try the utility that addresses it. Consider the trigger or shortcut, the setup required, whether PowerToys must keep running, and any limitations relevant to your Windows setup. A feature list can establish what a tool is designed to do; it cannot establish how much time it will save in your own work.
- For a key or shortcut that gets in your way, try Keyboard Manager and check whether the combination is reserved by Windows.
- For keyboard-first app launching, compare PowerToys Run and Command Palette rather than assuming they are interchangeable.
- For a recurring desktop arrangement, try Workspaces with the expectation that apps may visibly move after launch and that snapping is not included.
- Turn on only the utilities you find useful; General settings provides controls for startup and settings backup.
PowerToys is worth installing if one of its specific utilities solves a recurring Windows annoyance. The case is weaker if you expect every tool to be useful, or if a feature’s background-running requirement or behavior does not fit your workflow.
