There is no single best machine-learning app for Linux: choose PyTorch or TensorFlow to develop and train models, Ollama to run supported models locally, or a hosted Linux machine such as Paperspace ML-in-a-Box if you need cloud compute. You can use some machine-learning software without a GPU, but CPU work may not suit every workload; GPU acceleration depends on compatible hardware, drivers, and the software’s supported compute stack.

What counts as machine-learning software on Linux?

“Machine-learning software” can mean a framework for building models, an application for running an existing model, or a ready-to-use remote development environment. These solve different problems, so comparing them as if they were interchangeable apps can lead to the wrong installation.

  • Development and training: PyTorch and TensorFlow are frameworks for building and working with machine-learning models in Python. Their installation choices depend on the Linux system and whether you intend to use CPU or GPU compute. See the PyTorch installation guide and TensorFlow pip installation guide.
  • Local model use: Ollama provides Linux installation and service instructions for running supported models locally. It is not a substitute for every model-development framework. Consult its Linux guide.
  • Hosted development: Paperspace ML-in-a-Box is a Linux-based cloud template with a preinstalled machine-learning stack and GPU options. It gives you a hosted environment rather than installing all of that software on your own computer. See Paperspace’s ML-in-a-Box documentation.

The practical choice follows your task: write and train models, run an existing model, or obtain a prepared environment with remote compute.

Which Linux machine-learning app should you choose?

Start with the job you need done, then check the software’s current Linux, Python, and accelerator requirements before installing. The official documentation establishes installation paths and compatibility details, but the options below do not have a shared benchmark that would justify calling one universally fastest.

Option Best suited to Compute and Linux considerations
PyTorch Python model development and training Offers CPU, NVIDIA CUDA, and AMD ROCm installation choices. Check Python, glibc, and accelerator compatibility.
TensorFlow TensorFlow-based model development and deployment Check the current Python requirements and, for GPU use, the required NVIDIA software stack on its installation page.
Ollama Running supported models locally Has Linux installation and service instructions. GPU support depends on the GPU model, compute support, and drivers.
Paperspace ML-in-a-Box A hosted Linux machine-learning environment Provides a preinstalled stack and GPU options; compute is hosted rather than local.

Choose PyTorch if you need its development framework

PyTorch is a practical starting point when your goal is Python model development or training and you want to select a CPU, CUDA, or ROCm build. Its current stable-build guidance reports Linux distributions with glibc 2.28 or later and recommends Python 3.10 or later. Those are version-sensitive details: check the live page for the build you plan to install rather than treating them as permanent requirements.

Choose TensorFlow if your project uses TensorFlow

TensorFlow is the direct choice when your project or deployment is based on TensorFlow. Its Linux and GPU prerequisites are distinct from PyTorch’s, so do not assume a working installation of one framework means the other framework’s requirements are satisfied. The official pip guide is the place to verify current Python and NVIDIA software requirements before choosing an installation.

Choose Ollama for local use of supported models

Ollama is aimed at running supported models locally, not providing the same model-development workflow as a framework. Its Linux guide covers x86-64 and ARM64 installation, manual archive installation, and service setup. The separate GPU guide lists hardware support and requirements; consult that live list rather than inferring compatibility from a GPU brand or from another framework’s support.

Choose a hosted machine if local hardware is a constraint

A hosted Linux machine can provide GPU compute without requiring you to own a local accelerator. Paperspace documents ML-in-a-Box as a template with PyTorch, TensorFlow, Hugging Face Transformers, DeepSpeed, JupyterLab, and other tools, plus GPU options. It changes where compute runs; it does not eliminate the need to choose the software and environment suited to your task.

Can you run machine learning on Linux without a GPU?

Yes, some Linux machine-learning workflows can use a CPU, so a GPU is not a universal prerequisite. Whether CPU-only use is practical depends on the workload and machine; the documentation here does not provide comparable performance figures or a workload-independent speed estimate.

PyTorch explicitly offers a CPU installation path, alongside CUDA and ROCm choices. Its Linux guidance says an NVIDIA or AMD GPU is recommended, but not required, to harness the full power of CUDA or ROCm support. That recommendation is about acceleration, not a requirement to install or use PyTorch at all.

For other options, distinguish local CPU capability from GPU acceleration. TensorFlow’s pip guide specifies its GPU requirements separately, while Ollama’s GPU support depends on listed hardware and driver requirements. If your local machine lacks a suitable accelerator—or you do not want to configure one—a hosted GPU machine is an alternative, with compute running remotely rather than on your Linux desktop.

What should you check before installing?

Check the environment and compute path first; an installer that targets the wrong Python or accelerator build can turn a straightforward setup into avoidable troubleshooting. Requirements change with software releases, so use the current official pages for the version you intend to install.

  • Linux system: For the current PyTorch stable-build guidance, verify that the distribution uses glibc 2.28 or later. Do not assume this PyTorch requirement applies identically to TensorFlow or Ollama.
  • Python: PyTorch recommends Python 3.10 or later for its current stable build. TensorFlow publishes its own Python requirements; check its live installation page instead of copying PyTorch’s version guidance.
  • Compute type: Decide whether you want CPU-only use, NVIDIA CUDA, or AMD ROCm where the software supports that choice. “GPU” alone is not enough information to select a build.
  • Hardware and drivers: Confirm that the specific GPU and driver setup are supported by the software. Ollama maintains a hardware-specific GPU guide; PyTorch’s installer distinguishes accelerator builds.
  • Architecture: If installing Ollama, select instructions appropriate to your Linux architecture. Its documentation covers x86-64 and ARM64 paths.
  • Installation method: Read what an installer or service setup will change on your system, particularly when following shell-script or systemd instructions.

How do you install the right option on Linux?

Use each project’s current instructions instead of pasting a fixed command from an old tutorial. The exact package and accelerator build can change, and a command that is right for one Linux system may be wrong for another.

Install PyTorch

  1. Open the PyTorch local installation selector.
  2. Select Linux, your package choice, programming language, and compute platform. Choose CPU for a CPU-only setup; select CUDA or ROCm only when your hardware and driver setup support that path.
  3. Use the command generated for those selections, then follow the page’s current verification guidance. Check the listed Linux and Python prerequisites before running it.

Install TensorFlow

  1. Open the TensorFlow pip installation guide.
  2. Check its current Linux and Python requirements. If you want GPU support, review the required NVIDIA drivers, CUDA toolkit, and cuDNN details on that page.
  3. Follow the installation path for your intended environment, then verify the setup using the official guide. Do not substitute another framework’s GPU instructions.

Install Ollama

  1. Read the Ollama Linux guide and choose the instructions for your architecture and preferred installation method. The guide documents an install script as well as manual archive installation, including ARM64 archives.
  2. Before running an install script or configuring a service, review what the commands do. The documented systemd setup changes how Ollama runs on the machine; use it only if that service behavior suits your needs.
  3. If you want AMD acceleration, follow the guide’s optional ROCm package instructions. For GPU support generally, compare your specific hardware and driver setup with the live Ollama GPU guide.
  4. Use the guide’s driver setup and verification instructions for the selected compute path. Do not assume that a GPU supported by one framework is automatically supported by Ollama.

Start with Paperspace ML-in-a-Box

  1. Open the ML-in-a-Box documentation and review the template and available GPU options.
  2. Choose a hosted machine appropriate to your work and follow the provider’s current steps to launch it. The machine is cloud-based, so your local Linux computer is not where its GPU computation takes place.
  3. Once the environment is available, use the included stack relevant to your work rather than installing a second framework by default.

What commonly goes wrong with Linux ML installations?

Most avoidable setup problems come from a mismatch: the selected package does not match the system, Python version, GPU, or driver stack. Check the relevant project’s live documentation before changing drivers or reinstalling packages.

  • The install command fails on your distribution: Recheck the prerequisites and the selector choices. For PyTorch, verify the glibc and Python requirements shown for the current stable build.
  • The framework installs but GPU acceleration is unavailable: Confirm that you installed the CUDA or ROCm path rather than the CPU build, and that your hardware and drivers meet the project’s requirements. A framework installation alone does not establish that the accelerator is configured.
  • A GPU works in one application but not another: Check support separately for the application you are using. In particular, use Ollama’s GPU compatibility guide for Ollama rather than extrapolating from PyTorch or TensorFlow.
  • You are following an outdated tutorial: Reopen the official page and regenerate the PyTorch command with the current selector, or verify the current Python and GPU requirements in TensorFlow’s guide. Package choices and compatibility details are version-sensitive.
  • Local compute is not a good fit: Consider a hosted Linux environment with GPU options rather than treating a local GPU as mandatory for every kind of ML work.

Is there a universally fastest Linux machine-learning app?

No universal speed ranking follows from the available installation and compatibility documentation. Performance depends on the model, task, hardware, software build, and accelerator configuration, and no shared benchmark establishes that one of these options is fastest across workloads.

Choose by workflow and compatibility first. A framework for training, a local model-running application, and a hosted machine are different kinds of tools; a speed comparison is meaningful only when the same workload and comparable setups are measured.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install PyTorch and TensorFlow on the same Linux computer?

The options are presented as distinct frameworks, and the cited installation guides specify their requirements separately. Whether a particular combination fits your Python environment depends on the versions and setup you select, so verify both projects’ current requirements rather than assuming one guide covers both.

Does choosing CPU-only software stop me from using a GPU later?

A CPU installation choice selects a software build; it does not establish that a future GPU setup will be configured. If you later want acceleration, check the project’s current instructions for the compatible build, hardware, and drivers.

Is Ollama a replacement for a machine-learning framework?

Not for every task: Ollama is described as a way to run supported models locally, while PyTorch and TensorFlow are development frameworks. Pick according to whether you need to use a supported model or build and train models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use a cloud GPU from a Linux computer without installing the full ML stack locally?

Yes. A hosted environment such as Paperspace ML-in-a-Box runs on a remote Linux machine and documents a preinstalled stack with GPU options. Your local computer is not the machine doing that hosted GPU computation.
