Start with five checks: enable Find My iPhone, choose what you want iCloud to sync, review app access to personal information, adjust location access app by app, and decide whether apps can ask to track you. These are choices, not a one-size-fits-all privacy preset; settings names and availability can vary by iOS version, iPhone model, and region.
1. Enable Find My iPhone for device recovery
On most iPhones, open Settings > [your name] > Find My > Find My iPhone and check that Find My iPhone is on. Apple says Find My can help locate a device if it is lost or stolen. This is the recovery setting; it is separate from choosing which information is synced through iCloud. Apple’s iPhone setup guide covers Find My and iCloud.
2. Choose which iCloud features to use
Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud and review the available feature switches. iCloud can keep supported information in sync and make it available if you replace, lose, damage, or have a device stolen. Decide feature by feature what you want stored or synced; enabling every category is not necessary for everyone. For example, you may want a particular type of information available across devices but prefer not to sync another.
3. Review apps’ access to personal information
Open Settings > Privacy & Security, then check categories such as Contacts, Photos, Camera, and Microphone. An app generally appears under a category after it has asked for access. You can grant or revoke that access later, so the initial prompt does not have to be your final decision. Keep access that supports a feature you use; remove it when you cannot identify a clear need. 4. Set location access separately for each app
Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, then select an app to review its options. Depending on the app, choices may include Never, Ask Next Time or When I Share, While Using the App, or Always; some apps offer fewer options. Apple says apps do not use your location until they ask and you grant permission. Apple’s Location Services guidance describes these controls.
Use approximate location when precise location is unnecessary
For an app that does not need your exact position, turn off Precise Location in that app’s Location Services settings. The app then receives approximate rather than precise location. Whether that is suitable depends on what you expect the app to do.

Do not disable all Location Services by default
Turning off Location Services globally is a personal choice, but it can limit important Apple and third-party features. If your goal is to reduce location access, review individual apps first and keep the permissions needed for features you rely on.
5. Decide whether apps can ask to track you
Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking. There you can review apps that requested permission and switch off Allow Apps to Request to Track to stop future requests. Apple describes this tracking control as applying to tracking across companies’ apps and websites for advertising or sharing information with data brokers. It is distinct from Location Services: turning off tracking requests does not set an app’s location permission, and changing location access does not control tracking requests. How to prioritize the checks
There is no measured universal ranking, but the settings serve different purposes. Use this distinction to decide what to review first:
- Recovery: Find My helps with locating a lost or stolen device.
- Continuity: iCloud choices determine which supported information and features are synced or stored.
- Feature access: App and location permissions affect what apps can do.
- Privacy exposure: Information permissions and cross-company tracking controls address different kinds of access.
Menu wording and available controls can vary by iOS version and region. You can revisit these settings later as your apps and preferences change.
