A CPU, RAM, SSD, or even the monitor may deserve priority when it better matches the problem you are trying to solve.
Start with the problem you want to fix
Before shopping, note the games you play, your target resolution and settings, and the frame rate you want. Then describe the problem: low frame rates, inconsistent performance, long loading times, too little install space, or a display that cannot show the resolution or refresh rate you want. These symptoms point to different upgrades.
- Check the games and their requirements. Compare your PC’s parts with the requirements for the games you care about. Intel recommends starting with game requirements and your priorities rather than choosing by component name alone (Intel’s gaming PC guidance).
- Identify the likely limitation. For low frame rates, consider whether the game is limited by graphics or processor performance. For long loads or an HDD, consider storage. For slowdowns while several apps are open, check whether memory capacity is under pressure.
- Set a budget and check the whole system. Avoid over-investing in one part if another component will prevent you from using its performance. Intel likewise advises balancing components around the gaming experience you want (Intel’s gaming PC guidance).
Which component should you upgrade first?

When a GPU is the right first upgrade
A graphics card is often the strongest candidate when your goal is better graphics performance, higher resolution, or more demanding visual settings. That does not make a GPU the automatic answer to every performance complaint: a limiting CPU, insufficient memory, power supply, case, or monitor can constrain the result.
Keep the processor and graphics card balanced. Intel’s bottleneck guidance says the CPU and GPU work closely together and advises against prioritizing one to the detriment of the other (Intel’s CPU and GPU bottleneck guide). A powerful CPU paired with an entry-level GPU may leave some processor capability unused; an unsuitable processor can also constrain a graphics upgrade.

When a CPU should come first
Consider the processor first if the games you play are CPU-limited, you are aiming for high frame rates, or you stream and run other processor-heavy software while gaming. A CPU upgrade is only practical if the motherboard supports the replacement; some systems may also need BIOS support or a suitable cooler. Check compatibility before selecting a processor.
When more RAM is worth it
Upgrade memory when capacity is the issue, not simply because a faster kit sounds better. Intel describes 16 GB as a common starting point for modern gaming systems and says 32 GB can suit gaming with several applications open. These are broad vendor recommendations, not requirements that apply to every game or workload (Intel’s gaming RAM guidance).

Check your motherboard’s supported memory generation and capacity, and whether slots are available. If your current capacity is adequate for your games and concurrent applications, a RAM upgrade may not address the slowdown you are experiencing.
When an SSD or display is the better purchase
Choose an SSD for access time or space
An SSD is a practical upgrade when the system still uses an HDD and slow storage access or loading is the concern, or when the drive cannot hold the games and software you want. Do not choose an SSD as a default way to raise frame rates. Intel calls 500 GB or more ideal in one budget-system article and describes a 500 GB primary drive as a starting point in a prebuilt-system guide; those are capacity suggestions, not universal recommendations for every current game library (Intel’s storage guidance).

Choose a monitor that fits your target
A faster graphics card cannot make a 60 Hz monitor display a higher refresh rate, and a lower-resolution screen will not show a higher-resolution target. Consider the display if it is the reason you cannot use your desired resolution or refresh rate. The upgrade only makes sense as part of a system capable of driving that target in the games you play.
Check compatibility before ordering
- CPU and motherboard: Confirm socket and processor support, and check whether a BIOS update is needed.
- GPU and case: Verify card clearance and the space available for its length and thickness.
- Power supply: Check capacity and the connectors required by the graphics card or other new parts.
- Cooling: Confirm the case and cooler can accommodate the planned CPU or GPU.
- RAM and storage: Check supported memory generation, capacity and slots, plus the drive interface and motherboard support.
- Prebuilt systems: Compact PCs may use cramped or proprietary configurations, and some prebuilts are not designed to be opened. Check the manufacturer’s upgrade restrictions and warranty terms before changing parts.
Manufacturer upgrade guidance can help identify practical checks, but it is not a substitute for confirming compatibility with your exact system (MSI’s gaming PC upgrade guide).

What to choose without your PC specifications
There is no reliable universal upgrade order without knowing your games, current parts, display, budget, and performance symptoms. If graphics or resolution is the goal, investigate the GPU first; if the workload is CPU-limited, consider the processor. Increase RAM for a demonstrated capacity need, choose an SSD for HDD-related access or space, and consider a monitor when it blocks the display target you want. Verify the full system match before spending.
