You can shrink some Windows game installs without moving files or changing their formats by using NTFS file-system compression. It is not the same as turning game files into ZIP/RAR archives or rebuilding a game’s internal asset packs. There is no reliable extension-by-extension whitelist: results depend on the game and its files, so compress one install, measure the change, and keep a way to undo it.
What “compressing a game” can mean
Before choosing files, distinguish two operations that are often called compression:

The Steam-listed Game Compressor describes its approach as transparent Windows file-system LZX compression, rather than ZIP/RAR conversion. That is a product-page description, not an independent performance test; its own listing says savings vary by game version, file structure, and files present: Game Compressor on Steam.
Which game files are reasonable to try?
There is no source-backed rule that a particular extension is always safe or worthwhile to compress. A game may already store assets in compressed form, and the same game can change between versions. Instead of deciding by filename, consider transparent NTFS compression for an installed game on an NTFS drive, then test that specific install.

- Keep the game’s files in their existing paths and formats when using NTFS compression.
- Start with one game you can restore or verify if something goes wrong, and compare its actual size on disk before and after.
- Do not assume that a good result for one title predicts the result for another.
Do not apply a blanket rule to saves, shader caches, logs, mods, anti-cheat components, or launcher metadata. The available technical guidance does not establish game-wide rules for those categories. Follow the game or mod manager’s instructions, and back up personal data before changing files that may be user-created.
Why you should leave internal asset packs alone
Valve’s SteamPipe guidance is aimed at developers packaging games, not users applying Windows compression to an installed folder. Valve generally discourages general compression of developer pack files because changes that span asset boundaries can make updates less efficient; where developers compress pack files, Valve recommends per-asset compression where possible. SteamPipe may build an updated pack alongside the old one, so updating a large pack can also require substantial temporary disk space. See Valve’s Steamworks uploading guidance.

This is a reason not to casually edit or rebuild a game’s asset archives. It does not establish that ordinary NTFS compression breaks Steam or causes every compressed game to redownload.
Check the drive and compress an install with Windows
Microsoft’s compact utility works with NTFS partitions; it cannot compress FAT or FAT32 volumes. Check the game library’s drive before proceeding: in File Explorer, right-click the drive, select Properties, and read the file-system type.

- Record the starting size. In File Explorer, right-click the game’s installation folder, choose Properties, and note Size on disk. If saves or mods are stored near the installation, back them up according to the game’s instructions.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt. Search for Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, and confirm the prompt if Windows asks.
- Compress that game folder and its existing contents. Enter
compact /C /S:"C:pathtogame", replacing the example path with the actual installation path. Microsoft documents/Cto compress and/Sto include files in the specified directory and its subdirectories. - Test the game. Launch it and check the features you use. Then revisit the folder’s Size on disk to see whether the change was useful.
- Undo compression if needed. Run
compact /U /S:"C:pathtogame"to uncompress files in the directory tree. Microsoft’s compact reference documents both switches.
A folder’s compression setting is not necessarily the same as compressing all files already inside it. Microsoft explains that setting a directory’s compression state can establish the default for files added later; use the recursive command above to apply compression to existing contents as well. A game update can replace or add files, changing the installation’s disk usage and which files are compressed. Measure again after updates rather than treating the first result as permanent. If files appear to be missing or the game crashes, Steam Support recommends verifying installed files: Verify Integrity of Game Files.

Verification checks game installation files; do not treat it as a backup of personal saves. Steam says its backup feature applies to games that completely download, install, and patch through Steam, and directs users to game-specific sources or developers for file-location information: Using the Steam Backup Feature.
