For a group starting from scratch, Roll20 is the strongest place to begin: it offers a hosted browser-based free tier with maps, character sheets and chat, so the game master does not have to run a server. Choose D&D Beyond Maps if your group already has D&D content in its digital library; Foundry VTT if the game master wants host control and customization; Fantasy Grounds if connected combat automation and prepared adventures matter most; or Owlbear Rodeo for a simple shared battle map. These are use-case recommendations based on the providers’ documented features, not comparative performance or usability test results.

Which virtual tabletop should a D&D group choose?

Start with what your group already owns and how it wants to play, not with a feature checklist. A VTT can handle everything from a shared map to connected character and combat workflows, and those differences affect both the game master’s preparation and the players’ setup.

  • Choose Roll20 if you want a hosted browser-first starting point with tabletop and character tools and no GM-run server.
  • Choose D&D Beyond Maps if your group already uses D&D Beyond’s digital library and wants maps and tokens connected to it.
  • Choose Foundry VTT if the GM is comfortable arranging hosting and wants control over an extensible setup.
  • Choose Fantasy Grounds if connected D&D combat automation and officially licensed converted adventures justify installing a desktop application.
  • Choose Owlbear Rodeo if the immediate need is a map, tokens and fog, and you prefer to keep character and rules workflows separate.

Before committing, ask four questions: Does the group already own digital D&D content, does it want combat automation, can players install desktop software, and is the GM willing to manage hosting? Those answers narrow the field faster than comparing every add-on.

What should you compare before choosing?

Two platforms can both support an online D&D session while handling different parts of it. Compare access, content ownership, automation and the total setup the GM must maintain.

Browser access or desktop installation

Roll20 and Owlbear Rodeo are browser-first. Foundry’s GM runs or arranges the host, while players connect through a browser. Fantasy Grounds requires its installed application on supported desktop systems, so check that every player can use it before building a campaign around it.

Maps versus a broader rules workflow

Owlbear Rodeo’s documented workflow focuses on maps, tokens, fog and drawing, with dice available through an optional extension. It can work well alongside separate character sheets or rules references. Fantasy Grounds documents a more connected combat sequence, including targeting, attacks, saves, damage and conditions. Foundry’s official D&D fifth-edition system documents character sheets, advancement and requested rolls. These are different scopes of automation, not interchangeable feature lists.

Digital books and content ownership

Do not assume a D&D purchase transfers between platforms. D&D Beyond Maps uses material in the D&D Beyond library; Roll20 offers compendium sharing for purchased content; Foundry and Fantasy Grounds describe their own official content modules. Check the exact title’s availability, entitlements and sharing rules on the platform where the group intends to use it.

A physical rulebook is a separate purchase from a platform entitlement. Wizards of the Coast lists the 2024 Player’s Handbook (5.5e) as a 384-page physical book, but buying that book does not itself establish a digital copy or license in any VTT.

Is Roll20 a good place to start?

Yes, for a group that wants to launch a hosted game without asking the GM to run a server. Roll20’s free Base tier includes tabletop and character tools, maps and chat, with integrated voice and video also documented by the provider.

The free tier has limits. Roll20’s plan comparison lists 100 MB of Base upload storage. Dynamic Lighting begins at Plus, while Mods are listed for Pro/Elite. If your campaign depends on uploading substantial custom art or using those advanced features, check the current plan comparison before organizing the game around them. The plan page shows monthly versus annual billing; any quoted price needs to specify which billing basis applies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Roll20 also has a marketplace and purchased compendium sharing. That can be useful when the group wants digital material inside the platform, but sharing and access depend on the specific purchase and plan rules. Confirm the title and who can access it rather than treating a book bought elsewhere as transferable.

When does D&D Beyond Maps make the most sense?

D&D Beyond Maps is the natural candidate when the group already keeps its D&D digital library in D&D Beyond and wants browser-based maps and tokens that use that library. Its convenience depends on the group’s existing content and on which Maps features it needs.

Maps remains in beta. D&D Beyond’s support documentation says, “Maps is in Beta, so we’ll be adding and refining features as the tool progresses.” That is the provider’s status statement, not a guarantee of a release date or a particular future feature.

What is available without a subscription?

A registered D&D Beyond user can host a basic Maps game without a subscription. In February 2026, the provider described nine basic maps and nine animated counterparts as available to registered accounts. That count describes the free Maps offering at that time; it is not a count of every map available for purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Custom map uploads are a Master Tier feature, according to the official support page. The same provider documentation lists 10 GB of Master Tier storage. Check the current feature and sharing requirements before a campaign relies on uploaded maps or paid features; do not assume every player needs the same subscription without checking the applicable rule for the feature in question.

Is Foundry VTT worth the host setup?

Foundry is a good fit when the GM values control and extensibility enough to take responsibility for hosting or arrange hosting elsewhere. Its official D&D fifth-edition system is free and documents sheets, character advancement and requested rolls, while the host can build a more customized setup around the system.

Foundry Gaming lists a perpetual host license at $50 USD. Its FAQ says only the host needs to buy a license; players join through a browser and do not need separate Foundry licenses. Checkout calculates tax and the local-currency total, so the displayed USD price is not necessarily the final amount in another region.

The trade-off is responsibility: the GM must run or arrange the server and manage the chosen system and modules. Check module and game-system compatibility with the Foundry version before updating or adding components. Official digital content may cost extra, and a Foundry license does not imply that books bought on another service are included.

What does Fantasy Grounds offer for automated D&D combat?

Fantasy Grounds is the clearest fit in this group for a table that wants a connected combat workflow. Its D&D documentation describes character sheets, targeting, attacks, saving throws, damage and conditions; its catalog also includes officially licensed converted adventures.

The application is free to install, so a group can examine the workflow before buying a platform-specific adventure. The cost of a paid module is separate, and module contents vary. Buy a converted adventure only if the prepared material and rules handling help the GM; catalog totals are not a useful measure of whether a particular title suits the campaign.

The main access trade-off is installation. Fantasy Grounds requires its supported desktop application, unlike the browser-first choices here. Check operating-system support and make sure the players are willing and able to install it before investing in campaign content.

Is Owlbear Rodeo enough for a D&D game?

It can be enough if the group mainly needs a shared tactical map and is happy to handle character sheets and rules elsewhere. Owlbear’s documented core workflow includes browser battle maps, tokens, fog and drawing, and players normally join through a link without creating an account. Its Dice extension can add dice when the group wants that function in the same environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This lighter map-first approach can reduce setup for players, but it is not the same as a connected rules platform. Decide where character information, campaign notes and combat procedures will live. The available official documentation does not establish a reliable current plan price or storage allowance, so check Owlbear’s live plan terms if either is important to your choice.

How can you choose without buying the wrong books?

Run a small practice session before purchasing platform-specific adventures or building out a campaign. The goal is to identify friction for the actual group—not to assume that an advertised feature will fit its preferred way to play.

  1. Inventory the group’s digital content. List which books and adventures are owned, where they were purchased, and which players need access. Check each platform’s rules for the exact title and sharing arrangement.
  2. Decide how much automation matters. If players want targeting, attack resolution, saves, damage and conditions connected, compare the documented workflow in Fantasy Grounds with the sheets and requested rolls described for Foundry. If maps are enough, consider Owlbear or a broader hosted option.
  3. Check everyone’s access. Confirm browser availability for browser-based choices and desktop compatibility if considering Fantasy Grounds. For Foundry, decide who will host or arrange hosting.
  4. Create a free game or use a free application where available. Invite one player, load a map, place tokens and open a character sheet. For Owlbear, the provider’s getting-started guide describes room creation, starter maps, tokens, the optional Dice extension and link invitations.
  5. Resolve one practice combat round. Have the player make a check or attack, then see whether the platform’s tools match the group’s preferred pace and the GM’s desired level of automation.
  6. Only then buy platform-specific content. For Fantasy Grounds, try the free application before purchasing a converted adventure. For any platform, verify that the content you want is sold there and that the intended players can access it.

This sequence is a decision method based on the providers’ documented capabilities; it is not a claim that a comparative walkthrough or performance test was conducted.

How were these options selected?

The recommendations prioritize the practical differences that determine whether a group can start and sustain an online D&D game: access requirements, free entry, the GM’s hosting burden, rules automation, and how existing digital purchases are handled. Each option is tied to a specific use case rather than declared a universal winner. Provider feature descriptions and prices are treated as vendor statements, not independent evaluations; no comparative performance, uptime or usability testing is established.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a physical D&D book give me a digital copy for a virtual tabletop?

No digital entitlement follows from the physical purchase alone. Wizards of the Coast’s listing for the 2024 Player’s Handbook describes a 384-page physical book; confirm separately whether the platform you use sells a digital version and what access terms apply.

Do all players need a subscription to use paid D&D Beyond Maps features?

The answer depends on the specific feature and its sharing rules, so check the current D&D Beyond support guidance for the feature your group plans to use. A registered user can host a basic Maps game without a subscription, but that does not mean every paid capability is available on the free tier.

Can I move a D&D adventure I bought on one platform to another?

Do not count on it. The available platform descriptions establish separate content libraries and official modules, not a general cross-platform transfer entitlement; verify the exact title with both sellers before buying it twice or planning to migrate.

What does D&D Beyond mean when it calls Maps a beta?

D&D Beyond’s support documentation says Maps is in beta and that features will be added and refined as the tool progresses. That signals the provider may change the feature set; it does not specify when beta will end.
