For most console buyers who might move between generations, choose Digital Cross-Gen. It covers both consoles in one family. On PC, buy the Standard Edition in the storefront you actually use. Choose Vault (the premium edition) only when you will use its operators, weapon blueprints, BlackCell or Battle Pass benefits. Choose a physical copy after confirming that your console has a disc drive and that the package includes the generation you need.
Call of Duty editions at a glance
“Standard,” “Cross-Gen” and “Vault” describe different combinations of game access and digital extras. They are not interchangeable labels: a Cross-Gen licence addresses console-generation compatibility, while Vault mainly adds premium content. Physical packages add another variable because the disc, rather than only your account, controls where the game can run.

What Standard, Cross-Gen and Vault actually mean
Standard Edition
Standard is the core purchase: the game itself without the premium reward bundle. It is the usual PC label, sold digitally through Xbox on PC, Battle.net or Steam. For a current-generation-only release such as Modern Warfare 4, Digital Standard is offered on the listed platforms and Physical Standard is available on supported consoles.

Digital Cross-Gen Edition
Activision defines a Digital Cross-Gen Edition as the base game playable on both generations within one console family: Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, or PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. It is a digital entitlement, so the licence is attached to the purchasing account rather than a removable disc.
On Xbox, a supported Play Anywhere purchase can extend to Xbox on PC as well as Xbox consoles. That benefit is specific to qualifying Xbox titles; a PlayStation Cross-Gen purchase does not become an Xbox or PC licence. Cross-Gen is therefore the practical choice for someone who owns a PS5 and still uses a PS4, or an Xbox Series console and an Xbox One, and wants one purchase to follow that transition.
Vault or other premium editions
Vault is the digital premium tier for Black Ops 7. Activision describes it as containing “the most content in any edition of the game.” The listed Black Ops 7 rewards are the Operator Collection, five Mastercraft weapon blueprints, the Guild Override Weapon Camo, Reznov Challenge Pack content and one season of BlackCell Battle Pass benefits.

Those items change by game. Modern Warfare 4 Vault includes the digital game, Open Beta early access, the Hunter Killer Operator Skin, Hostile Alliance Operator Pack, Special Forces Operator Pack, Signature Weapon Collection, one season of BlackCell and a DMZ Deployment Bonus. Treat the product page for the specific title as authoritative rather than assuming that a Vault bundle has identical contents every year.

What is included in the Cross-Gen/Standard package
The Black Ops 7 purchase page groups the Cross-Gen and Standard offer with a set of launch and seasonal benefits: the game, one season of BlackCell, Guild Override Weapon Camo, an Operator Collection, a Mastercraft Weapon Collection, an Ultra GobbleGum Pack for Zombies and a Permanent Unlock Token. BlackCell and Battle Pass benefits become accessible when the Season 1 Battle Pass is available in-game.

Because the exact platform determines whether the package is called Standard or Cross-Gen, read the platform selector carefully. On a console, Cross-Gen is the relevant label when two generations are included; on PC, Standard is the normal digital edition name.
Black Ops 7 Vault price and upgrade route
Activision listed the Black Ops 7 Vault Edition at a $99.99 U.S. suggested retail price in 2025. A buyer who first purchased the Digital Cross-Gen or Standard package could upgrade to Vault on the same platform for a $30 U.S. suggested retail price, also documented in 2025. The upgrade does not turn a PlayStation purchase into an Xbox licence, and it does not change a physical disc into a digital copy.

This creates a useful two-stage strategy: buy the base edition if you are uncertain, then add Vault content later if you begin using the operators, blueprints or seasonal benefits. Confirm the upgrade button in the same store and account before buying, because cross-platform purchases and physical editions do not share this path automatically.
Physical-edition traps that can make a “cheap” copy unusable
Xbox packages
Black Ops 7 physical Xbox Cross-Gen is playable on Xbox Series X and Xbox One. It is not a disc-free solution for Xbox Series S: Activision states that physical editions will not operate on Xbox Series S. A Series S owner needs a digital edition or an eligible subscription instead.
PlayStation packages
The physical Black Ops 7 PS5 edition is PS5-only. The PS4 Cross-Gen package includes a code for the PS5 digital version, but the PS4 disc remains required whenever you play that PS5 version. A PS4 disc is therefore not an independent digital licence.

Physical editions also will not operate on a digital-only PS5. A console without a disc drive cannot authenticate a PS5 or PS4 disc, even if the game is otherwise compatible. Likewise, a PS5 disc cannot be used in a digital-only PS5; there is no optical drive to read it.

Checklist before ordering a disc
- Identify the exact console model: Xbox Series X, Series S, PS5 with a drive, digital-only PS5, Xbox One or PS4.
- Read whether the listing says Standard, Cross-Gen or includes a separate-generation code.
- Check whether the code is redeemable in your account’s country or region.
- Confirm the seller, stock status and current price; marketplace listings can use a different region or omit a code.
- Keep the disc if the package uses it as the licence for the upgraded-generation version.
PC buyers: storefront choice matters more than the edition label
For PC, buy Standard through the storefront you intend to use: Xbox on PC, Battle.net or Steam. A licence purchased on one PC storefront does not automatically appear in another. Select the platform before checkout and install through that same service.
Xbox on PC is the exception to the usual single-platform rule when Xbox Play Anywhere is offered. For a supported title, one digital purchase can provide access on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Xbox on PC. Check that the product page displays the Play Anywhere designation; do not infer it from the word “digital” alone.
Can Game Pass replace a purchase?
Activision says Black Ops 7 is available with Game Pass Ultimate on Xbox, Xbox on PC and cloud, and with Game Pass PC on PC. This can be cheaper than buying the game if you expect to play during an active subscription period.
Subscription access is conditional, not ownership. If Game Pass ends and you have not bought the game, access is removed until you resubscribe or purchase it outright. Downloading the game while subscribed does not create a permanent licence. Keep this distinction in mind when comparing a one-time Standard price with several months of subscription fees.

Modern Warfare 4 changes the generation decision
Modern Warfare 4 is listed for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC storefronts and a later Nintendo Switch 2 release. Activision says it will not be available on Xbox One or PlayStation 4. There is therefore no previous-generation Cross-Gen choice for this title: buyers choose among Digital Vault, Digital Standard and Physical Standard on supported platforms.
Xbox Play Anywhere allows one qualifying purchase across Xbox Series X|S and PC. If you still use an Xbox One or PS4, that hardware cannot run Modern Warfare 4, so a Cross-Gen label from an older Call of Duty should not influence this purchase.
Modern Warfare 4 Vault contents and upgrade
The Modern Warfare 4 Vault bundle adds Open Beta early access, three named operator packages or skins (Hunter Killer, Hostile Alliance and Special Forces), a Signature Weapon Collection, one season of BlackCell and a DMZ Deployment Bonus to the digital game.
Modern Warfare 4 Digital Standard can be upgraded to Vault on the same platform for a $30 U.S. suggested retail price, according to Activision’s 2026 edition information. Physical editions cannot be upgraded through that digital route, and the Vault Edition is digital-only. If you may want Vault extras later, starting with Digital Standard preserves the documented upgrade option; buying a disc does not.
Modern Warfare 4 loyalty discount
Activision documents a 10% Vault Edition loyalty discount for qualifying preorders made by owners who digitally or physically owned and played a premium Call of Duty title released from Modern Warfare (2019) through Black Ops 7. The offer is subject to Activision’s stated conditions and is available until October 23, 2026. On October 20, 2026, that deadline is still in the future, but eligibility should be verified on the account and preorder page before payment.

Is Vault worth the extra money?
Vault is worthwhile when you will use the included content, not simply because it is the “complete” label. Operators and weapon blueprints are cosmetic or loadout-focused additions; BlackCell and Battle Pass benefits matter most to players who regularly progress through seasons. Open Beta access and other bonuses have value only if you plan to participate during the relevant window.
Standard is the better fit when you mainly want campaign and core multiplayer, rarely buy cosmetics, or are unsure which platform you will keep. For Black Ops 7, the documented $30 upgrade gives undecided buyers a way to defer the premium decision on a digital purchase. For Modern Warfare 4, the same-platform $30 upgrade is available from Digital Standard, but not from a physical copy.
A practical decision process
- Choose the game and hardware first. Black Ops 7 supports the generation combinations described above; Modern Warfare 4 does not run on Xbox One or PS4.
- Decide whether you need two generations. If yes, choose Digital Cross-Gen within one console family. If no, Standard is usually sufficient.
- Decide between disc and digital. Select physical only if your console has a drive and you accept the disc or code requirements. Choose digital for Series S, digital-only PS5 or a frictionless account licence.
- Price the premium content against your play habits. List the operators, blueprints, BlackCell, Battle Pass and event bonuses you will actually use; ignore extras that would remain unused.
- Check upgrade and subscription alternatives. A same-platform digital Standard purchase may be upgraded for $30 U.S. SRP on the documented titles. Game Pass can provide temporary access, but it ends when the subscription ends.
- Confirm region, storefront and account. Codes, Play Anywhere rights and upgrades must match the platform and account shown at checkout.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
Buying a PS4 disc for a digital-only PS5
Symptom: the console has no disc drive and cannot install or verify the game. Fix: return it if possible and buy the digital edition, or use a PS5 model with a compatible drive.
Assuming every Cross-Gen package includes PC
Symptom: a PlayStation Cross-Gen purchase does not appear on a PC launcher. Fix: check for Xbox Play Anywhere; only qualifying Xbox purchases extend to Xbox on PC.
Expecting a disc to become a digital licence
Symptom: a physical copy cannot be upgraded through the store’s Vault option. Fix: use the disc-specific edition you bought, or purchase the digital Standard/Vault edition separately.
Confusing subscription access with ownership
Symptom: the game is locked after Game Pass expires. Fix: renew the eligible plan or buy the game outright; an installed subscription copy does not grant permanent access.
Which edition should you buy?
- Most console buyers moving between generations: Digital Cross-Gen for the same console family.
- Single-platform console players who want only the game: Digital Standard, or Physical Standard when a disc is practical.
- PC players: Standard in the storefront you actually use; choose Xbox on PC when Play Anywhere access to Xbox consoles matters.
- Seasonal players who will use premium rewards: Vault, after checking the title-specific contents and price.
- Xbox Series S and digital-only PS5 owners: digital only.
- Game Pass subscribers: use the subscription while active, then buy if you want uninterrupted access after it ends.
The safest purchase is the least expensive edition that matches your hardware and expected play period. Cross-Gen solves a generation-compatibility problem; Vault solves a content-preference problem. Keeping those decisions separate prevents paying for premium extras you will not use or buying a disc your console cannot read.
