For a first watch, begin with Buffy the Vampire Slayer seasons 1–3, then follow the overlapping Buffy season/Angel season years from Buffy 4 and Angel 1 through Buffy 7 and Angel 4. Finish with Angel season 5. That route preserves the important crossovers without making you maintain a night-by-night broadcast spreadsheet.
The 1992 Buffy the Vampire Slayer film is optional and non-canonical to the television continuity. The unaired pilots, animated pilot, DVD extras and the 2023 audio series are also extras, not replacements for the 254-episode television story.
What is the correct Buffy the Vampire Slayer watch order?
The shared television story has a clear shape: watch all of Buffy seasons 1–3 first, interleave Buffy season 4 with Angel season 1, and continue pairing later Buffy and Angel seasons through Buffy 7 and Angel 4. Watch Angel season 5 last; it is the final television season in the universe.
There are 144 aired Buffy episodes across seven seasons and 110 Angel episodes across five seasons, for 254 television episodes in total. The shows normally run 42–51 minutes per episode, so the complete television journey is a substantial commitment. A full-series DVD box set contains all 144 Buffy episodes on 39 discs; Angel was also issued in season sets and complete collections.

How long does the core order take?
Buffy season 1 has 12 episodes (10 March–2 June 1997). Seasons 2–7 each have 22 episodes, giving 144 episodes overall. Every Angel season has 22 episodes, broadcast from 5 October 1999 through 19 May 2004. Add the 86-minute 1992 film only if you want the franchise’s source material; JustWatch lists a slightly different 85-minute runtime.
Should I watch Buffy or Angel first?
Watch Buffy first. Angel is introduced in Buffy and leaves Sunnydale at the end of Buffy season 3, which is the narrative launch point for his Los Angeles series. Starting with Angel can spoil Buffy developments and assumes relationships, history and supernatural rules that Buffy establishes earlier.
Do not start Angel until you have finished Buffy season 3. The first Angel episode, “City Of,” and Buffy season 4 opener, “The Freshman,” premiered on 5 October 1999 and are designed as companion launches.

How do I interleave Buffy and Angel without getting lost?
The most satisfying method is to alternate episodes within paired seasons, while giving specific crossover pairs priority. You do not need to reproduce every original broadcast night: production and story order is more coherent, especially around Buffy season 3’s delayed “Earshot.”
- Watch Buffy seasons 1 and 2 in episode order.
- Watch Buffy season 3 in story order. Place “Earshot” before “Choices”; although “Earshot” aired later than the “Graduation Day” two-parter, it belongs earlier in the season’s narrative sequence.
- For seasons 4–7 of Buffy and seasons 1–4 of Angel, alternate episodes roughly one show at a time. When a named crossover is listed below, watch the Buffy episode first if both shows are named, then the Angel episode.
- After Buffy season 7 and Angel season 4, watch all of Angel season 5 in order.
If alternating every episode feels too fussy, finish each Buffy season block and then the corresponding Angel season, using the crossover checklist to avoid a misplaced guest appearance. That is simpler and preserves the major continuity beats.

Buffy season 6 and Angel season 3
There are no official on-screen crossovers after Buffy moved from The WB to UPN. Buffy season 6 episode 4 includes an unseen phone conversation with Angel, and Angel 3×04 “Carpe Noctem” includes an unseen call from Willow. Treat those as continuity references, not visual crossover episodes.

Use season blocks if you value convenience over perfectly timed crossovers: Buffy 1, Buffy 2, Buffy 3, Buffy 4, Angel 1, Buffy 5, Angel 2, Buffy 6, Angel 3, Buffy 7, Angel 4, Angel 5. Insert the named crossover episodes in Buffy-then-Angel order when a plot clearly moves between shows.
This approach avoids a spreadsheet and still delivers the major story. It is preferable to an original-airing recreation for a first viewing because the network schedule changed, Buffy season 3’s “Earshot” was delayed, and later UPN/WB scheduling did not consistently preserve paired broadcast nights.
Do I need to watch the 1992 Buffy movie?
No. The film is optional, non-canonical to the television continuity and best treated as a curiosity or an early version of the concept. Watch it before Buffy season 1 if you want to see the franchise’s source material, or save it until after the series so its differences do not confuse the show’s rules.

Fran Rubel Kuzui directed the 1992 film from Joss Whedon’s screenplay. Kristy Swanson plays a Los Angeles high-school senior called by Watcher Merrick to fight Lothos. It is an 86-minute, PG-13 comedy-horror film released in the United States on 31 July 1992. Its reported budget was $7 million and its North American box office was $16,624,456. Rotten Tomatoes’ figures reported by Wikipedia are 36% from 56 reviews, with a 4.4/10 average; Metacritic reports 48/100 from 17 critics; CinemaScore gave it a B+ average grade.
The continuity differences are substantial: film-Buffy is called as a senior rather than the series’ sophomore, movie vampires die like humans while series vampires dust and reveal demonic faces, and movie Merrick’s reincarnation concept does not match the television Watchers. The series retains selected backstory, including Buffy’s burning of the Hemery gym, while treating the finished movie as a separate production. Whedon described the film as “not quite her,” although he later endorsed Dark Horse’s three-issue The Origin comic as a near-canonical bridge combining the original script with series continuity.
Are there Buffy specials, pilots or sequels that replace episodes?
No. There is no aired holiday special or theatrical sequel that belongs in the main order. “Once More, with Feeling” is Buffy season 6 episode 7, a regular episode that should be watched in sequence, not as a separate special.
Unaired Buffy pilot
The original live-action pilot was used to sell the series and differs from the released version. It is an optional DVD extra; watch it after season 1 if you are interested in production history, or skip it.
Angel pitch tape

Animated pilot
A four-minute Buffy the Animated Series pilot was developed between 2001 and 2004, set during season 1 with David Boreanaz voicing Angel. The series was never picked up, so the clip is an optional curiosity.
Slayers: A Buffyverse Story
Slayers: A Buffyverse Story is a nine-episode Audible audio production released in October 2023. It is explicitly non-canon, features returning voices including James Marsters, Charisma Carpenter, Juliet Landau, Anthony Head, Amber Benson and Emma Caulfield, and does not continue the television order. Listen after the shows if you want an alternate audio adventure.
What comes after Angel season 5?
Angel season 5 is the endpoint for television. Optional continuation media includes Dark Horse’s canonical comic run from Buffy Season Eight (2007–2011) through Season Twelve (2018), IDW’s Angel: After the Fall, and related series such as Angel & Faith and Spike. Boom Studios’ 2019–2023 comics are an alternate reboot continuity rather than a continuation of the television ending. Novels, games and role-playing products are generally non-canon.

A March 2026 report placed both television series on Hulu and Disney+ in the United States; streaming catalogs can change by region and date. The 1992 film’s 29 October 2026 JustWatch listing showed it on Prime Video and Prime Video with Ads, with digital rental or purchase through Amazon Video, Apple TV Store and Fandango at Home. That listing showed no free U.S. streaming option on that date. Physical DVD and Blu-ray listings for the film were also available, while the television series is commonly sold in complete DVD collections.
Because availability moves, check your local catalog immediately before starting. The television show has no documented Region 1 complete-series Blu-ray in the cited listings; the film did receive a Blu-ray release in 2011.

Which order should I choose?
- Best continuity: interleave Buffy and Angel by paired seasons and use the crossover tables.
- Best simplicity: use the season-block order and watch crossover pairs in Buffy-then-Angel sequence.
- Best for a rewatch experiment: reconstruct original broadcast nights, accepting that scheduling changes and the delayed “Earshot” make this less coherent for newcomers.
- Best for a completist: add the 1992 film, unaired pilots, animated clip, DVD extras and optional comics after completing the 254 television episodes.

Is the 1992 Buffy movie canon?
No. The finished film is a separate, non-canonical production, although the television series reuses a few pieces of its backstory. Dark Horse’s 1999 The Origin comic is the closer-to-series-continuity version of the original origin story.
Can I watch Angel without watching Buffy?
You can follow Angel’s local Los Angeles plots, but the character’s history, relationships and several major guest arcs assume Buffy seasons 1–3. Watching Buffy first prevents introductions and finale consequences from arriving out of context.

Is Slayers: A Buffyverse Story part of the television canon?
No. The nine-episode Audible production released in October 2023 is a non-canon audio story. It is best treated as optional material after finishing both television series.
