For a first 3D printer focused on straightforward PLA and PETG projects, the Bambu Lab A1 is the clearest starting point. It offers a 256 × 256 × 256 mm build volume, automatic calibration, and a 300°C maximum hotend; choose the A1 Combo if you want multicolor printing, because the regular AMS is incompatible with the A1. Consider the enclosed P1S instead if printing materials such as ABS or ASA is part of your plan.

The right first printer is the one that matches the materials and workflow you actually expect to use. An enclosure, multicolor hardware, extra plates, filament, and replacement nozzles all affect the decision and the eventual cost. This guide explains what each option does, what to buy alongside it, and how to approach a first print without making the setup more complicated than it needs to be.

Which Bambu Lab printer should I buy first?

For a beginner whose initial projects will use PLA or PETG, start by considering the A1. Bambu Lab lists it with full-auto calibration, active flow-rate compensation, filament runout and tangle sensors, filament odometry, and power-loss recovery. Those features can reduce routine setup friction, but they do not make every material or print problem automatic: you still need to choose suitable settings, keep the printer on a stable surface, and pay attention when learning a new filament.

The P1S is the more relevant comparison if you expect to print ABS or ASA, or you specifically want an enclosed printer with additional cooling and an activated-carbon filter. It supports the same listed build volume and maximum hotend temperature as the A1, but its enclosure and material list make it a different fit rather than simply a universally better beginner model.

The specifications and material descriptions are manufacturer listings, not a guarantee that every model or filament will print successfully without tuning. “Ideal materials” is a useful starting filter for a first purchase, not a promise that every possible print job is equally easy.

Is the A1 good for beginners?

Yes, especially if the first goal is to learn basic printing with PLA or PETG rather than to pursue the widest material range immediately. Automatic calibration and flow-rate compensation can simplify parts of setup, while the listed sensors and recovery features address several common interruptions. They do not remove the need to learn how the printer, filament, plate, and model interact.

The A1’s open design is worth considering before you buy. If enclosure is a priority because of the materials you plan to use, compare it with the P1S rather than assuming the A1 can serve every future use equally well. The A1’s manufacturer-listed ideal materials are PLA, PETG, TPU, and PVA; Bambu Lab lists additional materials, including ABS and ASA, as ideal for the P1S.

What its convenience features do—and do not—mean

  • Full-auto calibration: Bambu Lab describes this as a product feature. It reduces some calibration work, but is not a substitute for selecting a suitable model, filament, and print settings.
  • Active flow-rate compensation: This is intended to help manage filament flow. It does not establish that a poor-quality spool, unsuitable profile, or difficult model will produce a good result.
  • Runout and tangle sensors: These can help detect filament interruptions or tangling; they do not guarantee a print will recover from every feed problem.
  • Power-loss recovery: The A1 lists this feature, but a recovery feature is not a reason to place the printer somewhere unstable or leave unfamiliar jobs unattended.
  • Camera and timelapse: The A1 has a low-frame-rate camera with timelapse support. Treat it as a limited way to check progress, not as a high-frame-rate monitoring system.

Should I get the A1 or the P1S?

Choose between them by working backward from the materials and printer environment you need. The A1 is the more straightforward match for a beginner starting with its listed ideal materials. The P1S makes more sense if an enclosure, ABS or ASA capability, or the listed cooling and filtration features are important to your plans.

Choose the A1 when

  • Your first projects are likely to use PLA or PETG.
  • You want the A1’s listed automatic calibration and sensor features.
  • You do not need an enclosed body for your intended workflow.
  • You want the option of A1 multicolor printing and are prepared to select AMS lite or the A1 Combo.

Choose the P1S when

  • You have a concrete reason to use ABS or ASA and want the enclosed design.
  • Additional cooling and an activated-carbon filter are relevant to the setup you want.
  • You understand that a listed material is not a guarantee of effortless printing, and will still need to learn suitable settings and handling.

Neither the P1S enclosure nor an activated-carbon filter should be treated as proof that ventilation is unnecessary. The available product information establishes that the P1S has an enclosure and filter; it does not establish a universal ventilation plan for every room, material, or print. Consider where the printer will sit and follow current manufacturer safety guidance for your material and installation.

For either printer, include consumables in your decision rather than comparing printer prices alone. Filament is needed to print; plates and nozzles may be useful as alternatives or replacements. Bambu Lab’s store lists smooth, textured, and dual-texture PEI plates, as well as filament families including PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, PC, TPU, PA, and fiber-reinforced materials. A broad store catalog does not mean every listed filament is ideal for every printer.

Do I need AMS lite for multicolor printing on the A1?

If you want multicolor printing on an A1, select AMS lite or the A1 Combo, which includes AMS lite. Bambu Lab’s FAQ says the regular AMS is incompatible with the A1, so do not buy the regular AMS expecting it to work with this printer.

Multicolor capability affects more than the printer package: it adds hardware to the setup and means you need to choose a model and print workflow that use multiple colors. If you are unsure whether you will use that capability, decide whether having it now is worth the added purchase and setup complexity. The A1 Combo is the listed route that bundles the printer and AMS lite; check the current package contents and regional price before ordering.

What do I need for my first Bambu print?

For a simple first project, start with the printer, a spool of a suitable filament such as PLA, the included build plate and nozzle, and Bambu Studio. Bambu Academy provides learning material covering installation, configuration, supports, filament customization, and print management. Add optional supplies based on the prints you expect to make rather than buying every accessory at once.

Useful first-purchase checklist

  • PLA or PETG filament: Both are on the A1’s ideal-material list. Start with a material you can use for the first test instead of beginning with a more demanding material.
  • Build plate: Begin with the plate supplied with your printer. A spare or alternate PEI plate can be useful later; Bambu Lab lists smooth, textured, and dual-texture PEI options.
  • Replacement or additional 0.4 mm nozzle: The recommended supplies include an additional or replacement 0.4 mm nozzle. Check compatibility and the printer package before ordering.
  • AMS lite, if you want A1 multicolor printing: The A1 Combo includes it; the regular AMS is not compatible with the A1.
  • A stable location: Set the printer on a stable surface and leave it in a place where you can keep an eye on unfamiliar materials and jobs.

Do not confuse an accessory being sold with it being essential for the first print. A spare plate or nozzle can provide flexibility or a replacement, but the basic learning sequence is more important: understand the printer’s controls, load a suitable filament, and begin with a modest test.

How do I make a first print without adding unnecessary complexity?

Use the first print to learn the normal workflow with a familiar material and a manageable model. Bambu Studio is part of the process, and the printer’s automatic features do not eliminate the value of understanding how to prepare, start, and monitor a job.

  1. Inspect the printer and included parts. Unbox the machine and check the printer, build plate, and included nozzle before setup. Follow the current instructions supplied with the product for assembly and placement.
  2. Install Bambu Studio and connect the printer. Use Bambu Academy’s installation and configuration material if you need guidance. The A1 documentation describes both LAN-only operation and Bambu Cloud connectivity; select the connection approach that fits your setup.
  3. Run automatic calibration. Let the printer complete its automatic calibration before moving on to a test print.
  4. Load a known-good PLA spool. Start with PLA, which is on the A1’s ideal-material list, and learn the loading process before introducing more variables.
  5. Choose a small MakerWorld model or calibration object. A modest first job makes it easier to learn the workflow than beginning with a large, multicolor project.
  6. Observe the result and learn routine care. Pay attention to how the model prints and learn plate cleaning, filament loading, and nozzle replacement before moving to less familiar materials.

If a first print does not go as expected, avoid changing several things at once. Check that you selected a material from the printer’s ideal list, that filament is loaded correctly, and that the plate and model are prepared as expected. Then use the relevant Bambu Studio or Bambu Academy guidance to investigate the specific symptom. The listed sensors and recovery features help with some interruptions, but do not identify or solve every print-quality issue.

When should I move beyond PLA and PETG?

Move on when you can complete basic prints and understand the ordinary tasks of loading filament, preparing a plate, and replacing a nozzle. The A1’s ideal list includes TPU and PVA as well as PLA and PETG; the P1S list adds PET, ABS, and ASA. The P1S is the more appropriate of these two choices if ABS or ASA is a real requirement, but material support alone does not teach you the settings or handling that a particular print needs.

Do not assume fiber-reinforced filament is ready to print directly on a P1S as sold. Bambu Lab says fiber-reinforced filaments should not be printed directly on the P1S before an extruder and hotend upgrade. Treat that requirement as a hardware decision to verify against current manufacturer instructions before buying such filament; the presence of a material family in a store is not proof that a printer is ready for it.

What should I budget for after the printer?

Plan for filament and consider whether an alternate or spare PEI plate and a replacement 0.4 mm nozzle fit your use. Bambu Lab lists several plate surfaces and a wide range of filament families, but the list of available products is not a required starter bundle. The best initial purchase is usually the smallest setup that supports the printer and the first material you intend to learn.

The available price detail does not establish a P1S price, prices in other countries, or a total that includes filament and accessories; check the current listing for your region and package.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use third-party filament with a Bambu Lab printer?

The material lists identify filament types, not every compatible third-party spool or profile. Check the printer’s current specifications and the filament maker’s spool dimensions and recommended settings before purchasing or loading a particular product.

Can I run a Bambu A1 without Bambu Cloud?

A1 documentation describes LAN-only operation as well as Bambu Cloud connectivity. The available information does not establish that every feature or workflow is identical between those connection modes, so check current documentation for the functions you intend to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can the P1S print carbon-fiber filament without upgrades?

Bambu Lab says fiber-reinforced filaments should not be printed directly on the P1S before an extruder and hotend upgrade. Confirm the required upgrade and current compatibility guidance before buying a fiber-reinforced spool.

Does the A1 camera show prints in real time?

The A1 camera is described as low-frame-rate and supports timelapse. That description does not establish high-frame-rate or continuous real-time monitoring.
