Short answer: your active party has four characters—your player character and three companions. For a first run on Patch 8, Shadowheart, Astarion and Lae’zel give the most reliable spread of healing, control, scouting and frontline damage; replace Lae’zel with Karlach when you want a warmer story focus. Of the ten story companions, eight can be romanced. Shadowheart is the most completed romance in Larian Studios’ first-year player data, while Karlach is the easiest heartfelt romance to begin and Astarion offers the most elaborate consent-and-autonomy arc. Jaheira and Minsc are never romanceable.
This comparison separates combat value, story importance, recruitment timing and romance tone, because the companion who wins a fight is not always the companion you will want at camp.

How many companions can you have, and how many can you romance?
The camp can contain all ten story companions, but only three can accompany your player character at once. The six origin companions—Shadowheart, Astarion, Lae’zel, Karlach, Gale and Wyll—are available as playable origin characters as well as party members. Halsin and Minthara join through Act 1 and Act 2 routes, Jaheira arrives in Act 2, and Minsc is an Act 3 recruit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsEight of the ten are romanceable: Astarion, Gale, Karlach, Lae’zel, Shadowheart, Wyll, Halsin and Minthara. Jaheira and Minsc have no romance route. The Emperor, Mizora, Haarlep and the drow twins are separate trysts, not companion arcs, and can alter an ongoing relationship.

Baldur’s Gate 3 follows Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition rules in a turn-based system with a level cap of 12. Larian’s final content patch, Patch 8, released on 15 April 2025; it added subclasses such as Swashbuckler Rogue and Giant Barbarian. The game launched on Windows on 3 August 2023, PlayStation 5 on 6 September 2023, macOS on 22 September 2023, Xbox Series X/S on 7 December 2023 and Linux on 23 September 2025.
Which companions make the strongest first-run party?
For a balanced first playthrough, take Shadowheart, Astarion and Lae’zel, then rotate Karlach into the third slot for scenes tied to her personal quest. This covers healing and buffs, locks and traps, ranged or melee burst, and a durable frontliner without requiring the player character to fill a particular class.
Shadowheart: the support slot
Shadowheart begins as a Trickery Domain cleric. That domain spends actions on illusion utility rather than the dependable healing and radiant control most new parties need, so a 100-gold Withers respec to Life Domain or Light Domain is widely treated as a first-week correction. Life supplies Blessed Healer and Mass Healing Word; Light supplies Radiating Orb and stronger area control. She also carries the artefact and anchors the Shar-versus-Selûne storyline, making her the least replaceable companion for story context.
“I’m not half as mysterious as you might think. Respect my privacy, my beliefs, keep us focused on finding a cure… If you do that, well… I see no reason why we shouldn’t get closer.” — Shadowheart
Astarion: the skill and burst slot
Astarion handles Sleight of Hand, traps and locks while Sneak Attack deletes priority targets. Thief 9/Gloom Stalker 3 is a common burst direction because Dread Ambusher adds a first-turn attack; Patch 8’s Swashbuckler removes the adjacent-ally requirement for Sneak Attack. Vampire Bite can grant the Happy condition. His Act 3 ascension-versus-spawn decision changes both his story and his combat identity.
“Keep your distance, darling.” — Astarion
Lae’zel: the no-respec frontline
Lae’zel is the strongest out-of-the-box martial companion for many first runs. Battle Master Trip Attack knocks targets prone so allies attack with advantage, Pushing Attack turns ledges into weapons, and Action Surge can double her opening pressure. Githyanki Misty Step and a Silver Sword of the Astral Plane provide bonuses that are especially valuable on a githyanki fighter.
“Who am I? Your only chance of survival.” — Lae’zel

When Karlach is the better swap
Karlach trades some tactical control for immediate, durable melee damage and a more openly emotional personal story. Frenzied Strike uses a bonus action, Soul Coins add 1d4 fire damage while she is raging or below 25% hit points, and Dammon’s engine upgrades lead to Heart of Iron and Heart Ablaze. Patch 8’s Giant Barbarian is an option for throw-and-size builds. Her romance cannot become physical until Dammon upgrades the infernal engine.

What are the best specialist parties?
There is no single meta party. Build around the job your player character does not already cover.
- Honour Mode burst: a Paladin (Minthara or the player), a Sorcerer (the player or a respecialized Wyll), Tempest Cleric Shadowheart and Gloom Stalker Astarion. Initiative and first-turn damage matter more here than camp chemistry. This is a build sketch, not a site benchmark.
- Dialogue and exploration: Wyll for Persuasion, Astarion for Sleight of Hand and Deception, a Bard respec for broad skills, and Halsin for Nature checks and Wild Shape.
- Frontline-heavy parties: avoid taking both Lae’zel and Karlach when your own character is already a dedicated melee class. Two frontliners can work, but you give up either reliable control, ranged damage or utility.
- Hireling solution: Withers can provide one hireling per class after level 3. Hirelings fill mechanical gaps but have no companion story or romance.
Withers respecs a companion for 100 gold. You can change class, subclass and ability choices, but not race, personal quests or unique companion equipment. Default classes are therefore flavour and starting convenience rather than permanent destiny.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWho should you romance in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Choose by tone rather than by a universal ranking. Romance is playersexual—gender and race do not block the companion routes—and approval comes from dialogue, quest decisions and combat choices. The UI normally shows only “[Companion] approves” or “disapproves”; on PC, the character sheet can expose a numeric value from -100 to 100.
Shadowheart: slow-burn and secretive
Shadowheart asks for patience around her beliefs and privacy. Her route branches sharply between a Shar-aligned Dark Justiciar life and a Selûne-aligned future involving her parents and the name Jenevelle Hallowleaf. Her artefact, resistance to much of the Shadow Curse and the Nightsong-related quest make the romance inseparable from the main plot.
Karlach: tender and bittersweet
Karlach is generally the easiest origin romance to trigger: kindness, loyalty and support for her engine are the important signals. The Act 3 outcome can send her back to Avernus, kill her, or turn her into a mind flayer; the mind-flayer ending was added in Patch 5. Her route is the clearest choice for players who want warmth with a painful edge.
Astarion: seductive, then about consent
Astarion begins with deliberate seduction and develops into a story about autonomy and breaking control. Forcing him to bite Araj Oblodra in Act 2 is a known breakup trigger. His romance is emotionally complex rather than simply flirtatious.
Lae’zel: martial partnership
Lae’zel’s early relationship is physical and direct, then changes as her certainty in Vlaakith fractures. It suits a player who wants a romance tied to githyanki politics, loyalty and personal liberation.

Gale: intellectual and high-stakes
Gale’s romance is built around his history with Mystra and the danger of the Netherese orb. His personal ending can point toward the Crown of Karsus or teaching in Waterdeep, giving the route a cerebral, consequential tone.
Wyll: earnest but comparatively sparse
Wyll dislikes casual trysts, especially Mizora’s, and his route hinges on the tension between his pact and his father, Grand Duke Ravengard. He can emerge as the Blade of Frontiers or become Grand Duke. Larian senior writer Kevin VanOrd wrote in a January 2026 Reddit AMA, “Wyll’s content is sparser than I’d have liked as a result.” He added, “I’m truly sorry I didn’t give you more quality time with him.”
“The frontiers demanded a blade. And so I heeded.” — Wyll

Halsin: the explicit poly route
Halsin begins his romance in earnest in Act 2 or Act 3. He is the only companion who can remain a later-stage partner alongside Shadowheart, Astarion or Karlach when that partner consents. His history is deliberately open: “I’m 350 years old. Of course there have been lovers. Just because I love nature doesn’t mean I’m betrothed to it…” — Halsin. He frames non-exclusivity plainly: “…I am but one of your lovers. You and I should seek happiness, wherever it lies. You are all I want, but I will not hoard you to myself. Let others know the happiness of being with you.” — Halsin
Minthara: gated, evil-leaning and strategic
Minthara offers an Act 1 one-night stand after the Emerald Grove raid, followed by a fuller romance after recruitment. Her Soul Branding bonus action adds movement and 2d4+1 fire damage to the next attack, and Brand of the Absolute items reward a committed build. She is the most path-dependent companion: a good-route knockout can preserve both her and the Grove, but a raid costs other allies.
“A disparate collection of vagabonds and strays.” — Minthara
Jaheira and Minsc: platonic companions
Jaheira cannot be romanced; her heart remains with Khalid. Minsc also has no romance route and remains oblivious to such advances. Their value is story and character history: Jaheira is especially meaningful to Baldur’s Gate veterans, while Minsc arrives with Boo and comic relief.

Community lists measure different things. Hack the Minotaur’s August 2026 60-point rubric scored Shadowheart 50, Astarion 49, Lae’zel 48, Karlach 47, Gale 41, Minthara 41, Wyll 34, Halsin 33, Jaheira 31 and Minsc 26. PC Gamer’s August 2023 staff ranking gave Karlach 272 and Shadowheart 239. Those are editorial frameworks, not official Larian rankings, so use them as taste indicators rather than proof of a correct romance.
Can you romance multiple companions?
You can begin courtships with more than one origin companion, but the game normally makes you choose one during a later “talk.” The canonical first opportunity is the camp celebration after saving the Emerald Grove, when high approval and an Act 1 trigger are in place.
The Tiefling Refugee Celebration has unique scripts and can queue a third origin romance if two were started on the same day before the long rest. That is a documented exploit, not a designed poly route. Halsin is the designed exception: he can continue with Shadowheart, Astarion or Karlach only after that partner agrees. Multiplayer characters cannot romance one another.
How does approval work, and when can a companion leave?
Approval is mostly hidden and changes in small increments—commonly 1, 5 or 10 points—after dialogue, quests and combat choices. The bands are Very Low (-49 to -40), Low (-39 to -20), Neutral (-19 to 20), Medium (21 to 40), High (41 to 60), Very High (61 to 80) and Exceptional (81 to 100).
At -20 and -40 a companion warns you. At -50 or lower, the companion can leave permanently and takes equipped gear with them. Origin romances generally need High approval plus their Act 1 story trigger, so bringing a companion to relevant conversations is safer than trying to raise approval at camp after the fact.

Which recruitment choices lock companions out?
Decide your route before committing to the Grove outcome. The biggest lock is the Emerald Grove raid: Karlach leaves, Wyll turns against you or dies with the defenders if he has not already been lost, and Halsin cannot join as a Grove ally. Minthara then has a straightforward path into Moonrise Towers.

How to recruit Minthara without raiding the Grove
- In Act 1, toggle non-lethal attacks before fighting Minthara in the Shattered Sanctum or during the Grove defence.
- Knock her out rather than killing her, and defeat the other goblin leaders.
- In Act 2, rescue Minthara from Moonrise Towers prison. This Patch 8 route preserves the Grove allies and adds Minthara later.
How to recruit Minsc
Keep Jaheira alive through the Moonrise assault and the High Harper quest. In the Act 3 sewers, knock Minsc out rather than killing him; the Emperor must be persuaded to extend the artefact’s protection. Minsc then joins with Boo.

Other permanent-death warnings
Some story events cannot be repaired with ordinary resurrection. Examples include the BOOOAL sacrifice, a Dark Urge killing the closest companion, leaving an Orin abductee to die, Haarlep taking body and soul, handing Astarion to Gandrel and allowing Cazador’s ascension to complete. Save before companion-specific decisions when you want to preserve every recruit.
What changes on a Dark Urge run?
The Dark Urge adds unique romance lines and can create a Minthara “Bhaalist power couple” route, including a possible neck-snap after Act 1 sex with her. If Isobel survives, Sceleritas Fel may later demand the murder of the closest companion, often your love interest. Gale and Karlach can leave if the Urge becomes Bhaal’s Chosen without enough approval, so a romance plan needs stronger approval management than a neutral origin run.
How should you choose your final party?
Start with the job your own build cannot perform, then choose the companion whose personal quest you do not want to miss. A Charisma-heavy player can take Shadowheart, Astarion and Lae’zel; a stealth or rogue player can replace Astarion with Gale or Karlach; an evil route can trade the Grove allies for Minthara. Rotate companions for their personal scenes rather than treating the active party as permanent.
The practical verdict is simple: Shadowheart, Astarion and Lae’zel are the safest first-run combat core; Karlach is the best story-first swap; Shadowheart is the most popular completed romance in the available official data; and there is no universally “best” partner. Match the romance to the tone you want—tender with Karlach or Wyll, complex with Shadowheart or Astarion, martial with Lae’zel, intellectual with Gale, strategic with Minthara, or consensually poly with Halsin.
What did Larian say it would improve about companion relationships?
In the January 2026 AMA, Kevin VanOrd said, “Firstly, to have more interaction between companions – not just with more and better banter, but to have them develop deeper relationships with each other, just as they do with players. Secondly, to ramp up player friendship and romance more subtly, so relationship building feels natural.” That explains why companion rankings often disagree: the game gives each route a different balance of banter, quest importance and romance pacing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does respecing a companion change their romance or personal quest?
No. Withers changes class, subclass and ability choices for 100 gold, but approval, romance triggers, race, unique items and personal quests remain tied to the original companion.
What happens to a companion’s equipment if they leave?
A companion who reaches the permanent-leave threshold takes the gear they are wearing. Remove valuable equipment before deliberately provoking a departure.
Can Revivify undo every companion death?
No. Ordinary combat deaths can be reversed, but scripted outcomes such as a BOOOAL sacrifice, certain Dark Urge scenes, Orin’s unresolved abduction and some companion-specific betrayals are permanent.
Is Shadowheart’s romance still available if I never recruit her from the Nautiloid?
Yes, she has later fail-safe recruitment opportunities at the Goblin Camp, the Mountain Pass and the Underdark elevator, although delaying recruitment can change which early scenes you see.
