Yes—an AI coding agent can be highly effective in a Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP) project, but only when it treats source sets, Gradle, and target-specific code as hard boundaries. Start by having the agent map modules, targets, commonMain and platform source sets, generated code, version catalogs, and CI rules. Then require a written plan, narrowly scoped edits, Gradle validation, and human approval before destructive actions or pull requests. Shared-code changes must be checked against every supported target, not just Android. IDE integrations, MCP servers, and Kotlin-aware tools can improve navigation and library discovery, while strict permissions keep credentials and production systems out of the agent’s reach.

What is an AI coding agent in a Kotlin Multiplatform project?

An AI coding agent is a model-driven developer tool that can inspect a repository, form a plan, edit several files, execute commands, and report results. In KMP, that capability spans a project in which portable Kotlin is compiled for multiple targets and platform-specific implementations live beside it. The agent is therefore more than an autocomplete feature: it can trace a feature from a shared API through Android, iOS, desktop, web, tests, and build configuration.

KMP projects use Gradle and are commonly developed in IntelliJ IDEA or Android Studio. A shared module is compiled separately for each selected target, so one edit in shared code can break several platforms even when the edited file appears unrelated to them. The agent’s first responsibility is to understand that topology before proposing code.

Why are KMP source-set boundaries the main safety control?

Source sets define where code is allowed to run. Put portable business logic, data models, and algorithms in common code; keep operating-system APIs, UI integrations, and device services in the appropriate platform source set. If a capability differs by platform, expose a common contract and provide platform implementations through expect/actual or another explicit integration boundary.

Location Appropriate work Risk when edited incorrectly
commonMain Portable domain logic, shared networking abstractions, serialization models, and common interfaces A compile or behavior regression can affect every configured target
Platform Main source sets Android, iOS, JVM, JavaScript, WebAssembly, or other target APIs and UI adapters Code may compile only on one platform or leak unavailable APIs into shared code
Common and platform test source sets Cross-platform behavior tests plus target-specific integration tests Android-only tests can leave other targets unverified
Generated source directories Files produced by code generators or build plugins Manual edits can be overwritten or create unreproducible builds

Before editing, ask the agent to identify every source set, its dependency graph, platform-only libraries, generated directories, and the targets enabled in Gradle. Require it to state whether the requested change belongs in common code or a platform implementation and which targets could be affected.

How should you prepare a repository for an AI agent?

A prepared repository gives the agent an executable contract instead of relying on guesswork. Have it read these files in order:

  1. Project guidance: README files, contributor documentation, AGENTS.md or equivalent rules, coding conventions, and release procedures.
  2. Build entry points: settings.gradle.kts, root and module build scripts, Gradle properties, version catalogs, convention plugins, and the Gradle wrapper.
  3. Source layout: modules, source sets, target declarations, generated-code paths, test fixtures, and platform-only dependencies.
  4. Automation: CI workflow definitions, required checks, caching rules, signing steps, artifact publication, and the target matrix.
  5. Dependency and API policy: compatibility rules, license requirements, vulnerability checks, and ownership boundaries.

Ask for a written inventory before allowing edits. The inventory should name the modules and targets, distinguish shared from platform code, list commands the repository actually supports, and identify environments the agent cannot run, such as macOS-only Apple builds.

What workflow lets an agent change KMP code safely?

Use a staged workflow in which planning, editing, validation, and review are separate decisions.

1. State the request and acceptance criteria

Describe behavior, affected platforms, compatibility expectations, and tests that must pass. If the request is a shared API change, say whether source or binary compatibility must be preserved. Do not combine an unrelated dependency upgrade with a feature edit.

2. Make the agent map impact before coding

Require a plan that names files, source sets, generated outputs, affected targets, and expected Gradle tasks. The agent should explain why each file is in scope and call out any expect/actual pair, platform API, or public API that may change.

3. Apply the smallest change

Prefer a focused patch in the correct source set. Keep portable logic in common code and inject platform behavior behind a narrow interface. Do not let the agent “solve” a missing platform implementation by importing an Android or Apple API into common code.

4. Review the diff immediately

Check source-set placement, public signatures, nullability, threading assumptions, resource usage, and generated files. Confirm that dependency changes are intentional and that licenses and provenance are acceptable.

5. Validate in increasing scope

Run formatting and static checks first, then compile and test the directly affected target. For a common-code change, run every supported target in CI or record exactly which environments were unavailable. A skipped Apple or native test is a visible limitation, not a passing result.

6. Prepare a reviewable pull request

The agent’s pull-request summary should include the plan, commands, actual results, unavailable environments, assumptions, risks, API or binary-compatibility effects, and suggested reviewers. A human should approve the final diff and any operation that can alter releases or infrastructure.

Which Gradle commands should an agent run?

Gradle is the executable contract for a KMP repository. Give the agent an allowlist of tasks rather than unrestricted shell access, and make it discover project-specific task names before running them.

./gradlew tasks --all
./gradlew check
./gradlew build

tasks --all reveals the actual compilation, test, formatting, analysis, packaging, and publishing tasks in that project. check usually aggregates verification tasks configured by the build; build may compile, test, and package more broadly. Repositories often add target-specific tasks such as JVM, Android, iOS simulator, native, JavaScript, or WebAssembly checks, but names vary. The agent should run the exact tasks documented by the project and avoid claiming a target was validated when its toolchain is absent.

For a focused change, run the narrowest relevant compilation and test task first. Then run the full supported matrix in CI. Formatting and static-analysis tasks may be supplied by plugins; have the agent discover and invoke the repository’s configured formatter and analyzer rather than inventing a task name.

How do you validate a change that touches shared code?

Validation must follow the fan-out of the shared module. A common declaration can compile successfully on one target while failing on another because of type mappings, memory rules, native interop, or missing platform implementations.

How can IDE and MCP integrations improve an agent’s KMP work?

IDE-aware tooling can expose indexed symbols, navigation, refactoring, inspections, and build execution that are difficult to reproduce with plain text search. JetBrains documents MCP capabilities for these operations, allowing an agent to ask the IDE about project structure and invoke supported actions with more context.

A Kotlin-aware agent can also use a library catalog MCP service such as klibs.io MCP to discover multiplatform libraries and inspect their target support. This reduces the risk of selecting a dependency that works only on one platform. The agent should still verify licensing, version compatibility, transitive dependencies, and the repository’s approved sources before adding it.

The MCP Kotlin SDK is itself a Kotlin Multiplatform implementation for JVM, WebAssembly, and iOS. It can be used when a KMP application needs to act as an MCP client or server, rather than merely using MCP to assist development. Keep those two roles distinct: an editing agent needs repository tools, while an application embedding MCP needs runtime protocol code and its own security model.

Limit every MCP connection to the tools it needs. Log tool calls, review data egress, and require confirmation before a server can write files, execute shell commands, publish artifacts, or contact external systems.

What permissions and secrets should an AI agent have?

Use least privilege and isolate the agent from production. Practical controls include:

  • Keep production credentials, signing keys, and long-lived cloud tokens outside the normal agent shell.
  • Use ephemeral credentials in isolated jobs and revoke them automatically.
  • Require explicit approval for destructive commands, force pushes, releases, publishing, and broad dependency upgrades.
  • Give read-only access to repositories and artifact stores until a reviewed step needs more.
  • Restrict network egress for MCP servers and command execution, and record which data leaves the environment.
  • Protect Apple signing credentials outside the agent’s ordinary context; use a dedicated, audited release job when signing is required.

These controls protect more than source code. Build logs can contain tokens, crash data, internal URLs, or proprietary prompts, so log access and retention deserve the same review as file permissions.

What Android Gradle plugin decision matters in a KMP library?

For Android targets in KMP library modules, Android Developers identify com.android.kotlin.multiplatform.library as the officially supported plugin. Projects migrating from older or deprecated Android Gradle Plugin APIs should evaluate that migration separately from feature work, because plugin changes can alter source-set wiring, publishing behavior, and task names.

Tell the agent to inspect the current Android Gradle Plugin and Kotlin versions, read the migration guidance applicable to that version, and produce a dedicated plan. Keep the migration in its own change set so a failed build can be attributed to the plugin transition rather than hidden inside a feature patch.

Which AI-agent setup fits a KMP team?

No single setup is best for every team. Choose according to where the agent must work and how much control reviewers need.

Setup Best fit Strengths Controls to require
IDE-integrated Kotlin agent Developers working primarily in Android Studio or IntelliJ IDEA Indexed navigation, refactoring, inspections, and build context Workspace permissions, approval for writes, and visible command history
Terminal agent using the Gradle wrapper Scriptable changes, local automation, and CI-oriented workflows Reproducible commands and easy integration with repository checks Shell allowlists, isolated credentials, and restricted network access
Agent with JetBrains or library-catalog MCP Large codebases or dependency and symbol discovery IDE intelligence and multiplatform library lookup Per-server tool scopes, data-egress review, and audited calls
Agent application built with the MCP Kotlin SDK Teams developing a Kotlin-native MCP client or server KMP support across JVM, WebAssembly, and iOS Runtime authentication, session isolation, and application-level authorization
ADK for Kotlin Building production multi-agent applications rather than editing a repository KMP core, hierarchical agents, human-in-the-loop flows, and resumable sessions Model, memory, session, and tool policies designed for the deployed application

Google’s September 9, 2026 announcement says, “ADK for Kotlin is built around a Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP) core that remains completely agnostic to specific model backends, session providers, or memory systems.” That flexibility is relevant when you are engineering an agent product; it is not a substitute for repository guardrails when you are asking an agent to modify application code.

What failure modes should KMP developers watch for?

The agent edits common code with a platform API

Move the API behind a common interface and implement it in each required platform source set. Add or update the corresponding expect/actual declarations and tests.

Only Android is tested

Run the complete supported target matrix in CI and identify unavailable environments. A successful Android build does not establish that iOS, native, JavaScript, or WebAssembly still compile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An expect/actual pair drifts

Compare signatures, visibility, generic constraints, and annotations in every implementation. Ask the compiler to catch mismatches before reviewing behavior-level tests.

A dependency upgrade is hidden in a feature patch

Separate the upgrade, document compatibility and license effects, and run the full matrix. This makes rollback and ownership clear.

Generated files are hand-edited

Change the generator input or build configuration, regenerate in a clean checkout, and verify that CI produces the same output.

Tooling reports a false green result

Inspect command output and exit codes, preserve logs, and list skipped or flaky tasks explicitly in the pull request. “Not run” is a status that reviewers need to see.

What should the pull-request checklist contain?

  • Modules and source sets changed, with a reason for each.
  • Targets affected and targets actually compiled or tested.
  • Exact Gradle commands and their exit results.
  • Formatting, static-analysis, API, binary-compatibility, and license checks.
  • Generated-file and dependency-provenance review.
  • Unavailable environments, flaky tests, assumptions, and residual risks.
  • Human reviewer assignment for platform owners and release-sensitive code.

This record turns an agent’s output into an auditable engineering change. It also gives reviewers enough context to distinguish a genuinely verified patch from one that merely compiles on the author’s machine.

How do you decide whether an AI agent is ready for your KMP repository?

Start with a low-risk module and read-only access. Measure whether the agent consistently identifies source-set boundaries, chooses documented Gradle tasks, reports target gaps honestly, and keeps patches focused. Expand permissions only after those behaviors are repeatable in code review.

The most reliable KMP agent is not the one that edits the most files. It is the one that understands the shared-module fan-out, preserves platform boundaries, executes the repository’s real checks, and pauses for human decisions when a change affects credentials, releases, dependencies, or public APIs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AI agent work with Kotlin Multiplatform projects that use Compose Multiplatform?

Yes, provided the agent treats UI code like any other target-sensitive code. Ask it to identify which Compose source sets and platform integrations are enabled, then validate each configured target rather than assuming a desktop or Android preview proves all platforms work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should a team handle an Apple target when the agent runs on Linux or Windows?

Keep Apple compilation and tests in a macOS CI job with the same Gradle wrapper and repository revision. The agent should submit the change and mark Apple validation as pending or unavailable locally; reviewers should wait for the dedicated CI result instead of inferring it from non-Apple builds.

Should an agent be allowed to create new MCP servers?

Treat a new server as a security and architecture change, not a convenience setting. Review its source, authentication, network destinations, available tools, data retention, and write permissions before adding it to a developer or CI environment.

What is the safest way to let an agent modify dependency versions?

Use a separate, explicitly approved change that records the reason, affected targets, transitive changes, licenses, and rollback plan. Run the complete verification matrix because a version can support one KMP target while failing another.
