No major consumer chatbot offers a universal, unconditional promise that your conversations are never used for model training. The four services with clearly documented controls—ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini Apps and consumer Microsoft Copilot—handle training differently by account type, setting, region and conversation. ChatGPT and Copilot can use consumer chats unless you opt out; Claude can use chats when you permit improvement or when a conversation is flagged for safety review; Gemini can use activity when Keep Activity is enabled. Each service also has separate rules for storage, human review, safety processing, feedback and deletion. The practical answer is to identify your exact account, turn off the relevant improvement setting, use a temporary or incognito mode when available, and avoid entering highly sensitive material unless the provider’s terms meet your requirements.

Which AI chatbots don’t use your conversations for model training?

There is no verified, provider-wide list of consumer chatbots that permanently exclude every conversation from model training. Instead, privacy depends on the product and the control you select. The table below summarizes the documented consumer policies for four services; it is not an exhaustive market ranking.

Service and scope Training or improvement rule Important qualification
OpenAI individual services, including ChatGPT Content may be used to train models. An opt-out excludes new conversations, and Temporary Chat is not used for training. Submitting feedback can allow the associated conversation to be used for training.
Claude Free, Pro, Max and Claude Code on those accounts Chats and coding sessions may be used to improve models when you allow it, when a conversation is flagged for safety review, or under another explicit opt-in. Incognito chats are excluded from model improvement. Deletion and training-pipeline retention follow different clocks.
Signed-in Gemini Apps With Keep Activity on, activity may be used to improve services, including training generative-AI models. Turning it off stops future chats from being used for that improvement. Some chats are reviewed by people and can remain for up to three years; turning activity off does not stop all safety or response processing.
Consumer Microsoft Copilot Conversation activity may be used for training for eligible users unless an opt-out or an applicable exclusion applies. Opting out covers future conversations. Organizational Entra ID accounts and specified Microsoft 365 experiences have separate exclusions.

Policies change, and a privacy label such as “private” does not define model-training use. Check the current data-control page for the exact app, account and country before submitting confidential text or files.

What does “not used for model training” actually mean?

A training opt-out answers only one question: whether a provider may add your conversation to future model-improvement data. It does not automatically mean the conversation is never stored, scanned, reviewed or processed.

Training and improvement

Providers may use conversations to tune a model, evaluate responses or improve safety systems. Some policies call this “model improvement” rather than “training,” but the setting can cover both. An opt-out generally applies prospectively: older chats already eligible for use are not necessarily removed from training systems.

Storage and deletion

A chat can remain in a history list or backend storage even when it is excluded from training. Deleting a conversation may remove it from the visible account immediately while backend copies, security logs or legally required records persist for a stated period.

Human review, safety and feedback

Providers may route a small subset of conversations to reviewers to investigate abuse, improve safety or handle a support report. Clicking a thumbs-up or thumbs-down can submit the surrounding conversation for analysis, sometimes creating an exception to a general training opt-out. Treat feedback as a separate data-sharing action.

Personalization and service operation

Chat history can be used to answer the current request, maintain a session, personalize responses or detect fraud. Turning off training does not prevent the processing needed to return a response or protect the service.

How does ChatGPT handle training opt-out and Temporary Chat?

For individual OpenAI services, including ChatGPT, content may be used to train models unless you change the data-control setting. Once you opt out, new conversations are excluded from training. Temporary Chat provides a separate way to start a conversation that is not used to train models.

Opting out

Open ChatGPT’s current data-control or privacy settings, locate the control for using your content to improve the model, and switch it off. The exact label and menu location can change between the web app, mobile app and account region, so verify the setting in the interface you actually use. The exclusion is forward-looking: it applies to new conversations after the change rather than retroactively rewriting the provider’s training history.

Using Temporary Chat

Choose Temporary Chat before sending sensitive material. OpenAI states that Temporary Chats are not used to train models. Temporary status is a conversation mode, not proof that no operational or safety retention occurs, so do not treat it as a guarantee of immediate deletion.

The feedback exception

If you submit feedback on a response, the associated conversation may still be used for training even after you have opted out. Avoid sending feedback from a conversation that contains information you do not want considered for improvement.

Does Claude use consumer conversations to improve its models?

Anthropic’s consumer plans—Claude Free, Pro, Max and Claude Code on those accounts—can use chats and coding sessions for improvement under specific conditions. Use can occur when you give permission, when a conversation is flagged for safety review, or when you make another explicit opt-in.

Model Improvement setting

Review Claude’s privacy or model-improvement control and decline improvement use if you do not want ordinary chats contributing to model development. Because the setting governs permission, do not assume that a paid plan or a coding session is automatically excluded.

Incognito chats

Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude even when Model Improvement is enabled. Select Incognito before entering the material; changing a setting after the fact cannot guarantee that an earlier chat is excluded.

Two different retention periods

Anthropic says a deleted conversation disappears from chat history immediately and is deleted from backend storage within 30 days. Separately, when you allow improvement use, de-identified data may remain in model-training pipelines for up to five years. The 30-day statement concerns deletion of a chat from backend storage; the five-year statement concerns de-identified information already placed in improvement systems. They are not contradictory and should not be combined into a single “retention” number.

What happens to chats in Gemini Apps?

For signed-in Gemini Apps, Google says activity may be used to improve services, including training generative-AI models, when Keep Activity is on. Turning Keep Activity off stops future chats from being used to improve Google AI, but it does not end every form of processing.

Keep Activity and future chats

Open Gemini’s Activity or privacy controls and turn Keep Activity off before starting a sensitive conversation. The setting is prospective. Chats created while the feature was enabled are not automatically made ineligible by switching it off later.

Human review and three-year retention

Google says some chats are reviewed by human reviewers for service and safety purposes. Reviewed chats can be retained for up to three years, and deleting activity does not remove those reviewed copies. This is why a training or activity control should not be described as zero retention.

Processing that continues when activity is off

Google still processes prompts and responses as needed to provide the requested answer, protect the service and investigate abuse. Keep Activity off limits future improvement use; it is not an instruction to stop all security, safety or operational handling.

Is consumer Microsoft Copilot trained on your conversations?

Microsoft says consumer Copilot can use conversation activity for model training for eligible users, subject to categories and users that are excluded or that opt out. The opt-out excludes future conversations, so change the setting before sharing information you want protected.

Consumer settings and the logged-out case

Microsoft’s Privacy FAQ for Microsoft Copilot states: “If you are not logged into Copilot with a Microsoft Account or other third-party authentication, we do not train on your conversations.” That statement applies to the logged-out consumer experience described in the FAQ; it should not be generalized to every Copilot account.

Organizational and Microsoft 365 distinctions

Microsoft distinguishes consumer Copilot from organizational Entra ID accounts and specified Microsoft 365 experiences, which it says are not used for training the relevant generative-AI models. Business administrators should verify the exact product and tenant terms rather than assuming that a consumer setting carries over.

Other processing remains possible

Training exclusion does not eliminate product, safety, security or compliance processing. A prompt may still be handled to generate a response, detect abuse, maintain reliability or meet legal obligations.

How should I compare chatbot privacy controls?

Use the same questions for every service instead of relying on a “private” badge or a plan name.

  1. Identify the scope. Record the app, sign-in method, subscription, country and whether the account is personal or organizational.
  2. Find the exact control. Look in the current privacy, data controls or activity page for wording about model training, model improvement or using content to improve services.
  3. Check the effective date. Determine whether the switch affects only future conversations. Assume it does unless the policy explicitly says otherwise.
  4. Look for special modes. Note whether Temporary, Incognito or logged-out conversations receive different treatment.
  5. Read exceptions. Search for safety review, abuse investigation, support cases, user feedback and legal requests.
  6. Read deletion terms separately. Confirm how long chats remain in history, backend storage, reviewer systems or de-identified training pipelines.
  7. Test with harmless content. After changing a setting, verify that the interface shows it as off and that you are using the intended account before entering confidential material.

Which option is safest for sensitive information?

The safest option is not to submit information that would cause harm if a provider stored or reviewed it. If you must use a chatbot, choose an account and mode whose written policy fits your threat model, disable improvement use first, and avoid feedback on sensitive chats.

For personal conversations

Use a temporary or incognito mode where available, remove names and account numbers, and keep identifying details out of prompts. Remember that an opt-out does not necessarily erase an existing history.

For workplace or client data

Use an organizational account only after your administrator has confirmed the applicable terms, retention period and geographic requirements. Consumer controls may not apply to a managed tenant, and a business exclusion from model training does not automatically prohibit logging or human safety review.

For regulated or highly confidential data

Ask your legal, security or compliance team to approve the service. If the provider does not state how deletion, reviewer access and regional processing work for your account, treat that uncertainty as a reason not to upload the data.

Is this list exhaustive?

No. The documented policies here cover OpenAI individual services, Claude consumer plans, signed-in Gemini Apps and consumer Microsoft Copilot. A current authoritative consumer policy for Perplexity was not established, so no training or retention claim about it should be inferred. Other services may have different defaults, regional rules or business-only guarantees; verify their primary policy pages before relying on them.

What should you remember before sending a private prompt?

“Not used for training” is a narrow promise, not a synonym for “never stored” or “never seen by a person.” Set the control before the conversation, use the provider’s temporary mode when appropriate, avoid feedback on sensitive chats, and confirm deletion and account scope separately.

Frequently asked questions

Can deleting a chat remove information that already influenced a model?

Not necessarily. Deleting a visible conversation and removing backend copies are separate operations, and information already de-identified in a training pipeline may follow a different retention schedule. Ask the provider whether deletion affects training datasets or only account storage.

Does paying for a premium consumer plan automatically stop training?

No. Claude’s Free, Pro and Max consumer plans can share the same improvement conditions, and consumer ChatGPT or Copilot policies are not replaced by a subscription label. Check the account’s data-control setting rather than inferring privacy from price.

Can a chatbot provider use a conversation for safety without training on it?

Yes. Safety, abuse detection and service reliability are distinct purposes. A provider may retain or review a conversation for those purposes even when the conversation is excluded from model improvement.

What is the best way to verify a setting after an app update?

Open the privacy controls directly after the update, confirm the account identity and region, and read the linked policy’s effective date. Screenshot or record the setting for regulated work, because menu names and defaults can change without changing the product’s brand.
