For a broad first taste of Sonic, start with SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS. It combines a remaster of Sonic Generations—with Classic and Modern Sonic stages—and a separate Shadow campaign, so one game offers more than one style of fast-paced stage play. If you already know you want classic 2D levels or open-ended exploration, Sonic Origins or Sonic Frontiers may suit you better.

There is no single required starting point or official play order for these games. Pick based on the gameplay you want to try first; this is a gameplay recommendation, not a story sequence.

Best broad starting point: SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS
This is a useful first pick if you’re unsure which Sonic style appeals to you. SEGA describes it as a collection that includes a remaster of Sonic Generations and a new Shadow campaign; the Sonic stages include both Classic and Modern styles. That makes it a sampler rather than a pure entry into only the earliest 2D games or the open-world format. SEGA’s release announcement dates its release to October 25, 2024, and SEGA Support’s overview describes the included experiences.
This recommendation is about the range of play styles it contains, not a claim that it is the easiest Sonic game. The available publisher descriptions do not provide a reliable cross-game difficulty ranking, and they do not establish an official order in which the stories must be played.

Choose Sonic Origins for classic 2D stages
If your main interest is seeing how early Sonic played, Sonic Origins is the most direct fit among these options. SEGA’s official manual lists Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles as featured games. Choose this over the broader sampler if classic side-scrolling is specifically what you want to try first.
Choose Sonic Frontiers for exploration
Sonic Frontiers has a different structure from a classic 2D platformer. SEGA describes its Open-Zone map as a place to tackle challenges, battles, puzzles, and side quests, alongside Cyber Space levels. It also offers Action Style controls, described by SEGA as an accessible option for platforming. The publisher’s November 8, 2022 release announcement explains the control options and game structure.

For Nintendo Switch 2, SEGA announced a Sonic Frontiers: Definitive Edition digital release for June 24, 2026, and a physical release for September 17, 2026. SEGA says that edition includes the three major free updates, previous DLC, and Digital Deluxe bonuses. These are dated details from the publisher; check your local storefront for current availability. SEGA’s announcement also reported five million worldwide units sold as of August 14, 2026; that dated sales figure is context, not a measure of quality or a recommendation ranking.
Check platform and edition before buying
Availability and format depend on platform and territory, so confirm the exact edition on the store where you plan to buy. SEGA’s regional official SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS site lists physical and digital editions for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch 2, and Nintendo Switch, while listing Xbox and PC editions as digital-only. These regional details may not apply everywhere.

The Nintendo Switch 2 physical edition is a game-key card, not a fully self-contained cartridge: SEGA says a broadband connection and an initial download are required. Check the packaging and local listing carefully if the download requirement or physical format matters to you. SEGA’s separate October 25, 2024 announcement lists the original release platforms: PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam, and Epic Games Store.
