Chocobo Gear is a feature in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: earn Golden Plumes by restoring Chocobo Stop signs, trade plumes for equipment at a Tack Shop, then use the Chocoboutique sign at a ranch to equip and recolor the pieces. Buying gear and putting it on your mount are separate steps. Square Enix confirms that Rebirth lets players customize Chocobo equipment; this guide is not describing a menu shared across every game called Final Fantasy VII.

What do I need before I can customize a Chocobo?

You need access to a Chocobo in the region you are exploring, a way to earn or obtain the gear you want, and access to a ranch’s Chocoboutique. Square Enix says a wild Chocobo can be called within the region where it is caught, so do not assume one mount or one appearance setting applies identically across every region. The game’s official Rebirth world page confirms equipment customization.

The introductory route is in the Grasslands around Bill’s Ranch. Once you have the region’s Chocobo, the basic gear loop is: find a fallen Chocobo Stop sign, repair it to earn a Golden Plume, exchange plumes at a Tack Shop, and equip your purchase at the Chocoboutique sign. A plume is an in-game collectible, not gil or a real-money purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That regional detail is worth keeping in mind if you are following instructions from another part of the game. The region’s Chocobo and the ranch services are the relevant starting points; the official feature description does not say that one mount or one appearance setup carries identically across every region. If you are playing the original Final Fantasy VII, these Rebirth-specific directions should not send you searching for a Chocoboutique that the cited official page does not establish for that game.

How do I get Golden Plumes?

Follow a small Chicabo to a fallen Chocobo Stop sign and restore the sign. The repair earns a Golden Plume, and the restored stop becomes a fast-travel point. On PS5, the repair interaction uses the Triangle button.

  1. Look for a Chicabo. When you spot one, follow it rather than searching randomly for the fallen sign.
  2. Reach the damaged Chocobo Stop. The Chicabo leads you to the sign that needs repair.
  3. Hold Triangle to restore it. The PS5 instructions in the Chocobo Stops guide specify holding Triangle for this interaction.
  4. Collect the Golden Plume. Use the plume at a Tack Shop when you are ready to buy gear.

PowerPyx’s 2024 location guide documents 48 Chocobo Stops across the game: eight in each of six regions, with one Golden Plume per stop. That is the guide publisher’s map count, not a separately verified Square Enix statistic. Finding stops therefore serves two purposes: it gives you plumes for equipment and opens additional fast-travel points.

If you are collecting gear rather than only repairing stops along your route, the mapped total gives you a useful sense of the plume supply: the guide lists one plume for each of its 48 locations. It does not mean you need to find every stop before you can start customizing. Check the item’s current Tack Shop price first, then decide whether you want to continue exploring for more plumes or pursue a gear reward through another activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restoring a stop is also useful even when you do not have a particular piece in mind. The fast-travel point is a separate benefit from the plume, so repairs help with getting around as well as gathering the in-game currency for equipment. The Chicabo is the clue to the fallen sign; follow it to the repair rather than treating the bird itself as the vendor or the customization menu.

Where is the Chocobo Gear shop?

Look for a Chocobo ranch or another vendor selling Chocobo wares. The gear inventory identifies these vendors as Tack Shops; the ranch’s Tack Shop is where you exchange Golden Plumes for most purchasable equipment. The Chocoboutique is a different interaction at the ranch, used to equip and recolor gear.

At the Tack Shop: buy pieces

Browse the available equipment and check the plume cost for each item. For one documented example, the Shinra Avian Helmet, Breastplate, and Greaves each cost two Golden Plumes in the cited inventory. Prices and available sets vary with story progress, however, and another 2024 guide gives an early-area example of three plumes per piece. Treat the displayed price at the vendor as the relevant cost for your current stock rather than assuming one universal price for every set.

The two cited early examples are a reason to inspect the individual item instead of budgeting from a single set price you saw elsewhere. The Shinra Avian pieces are each listed at two plumes in one inventory, while a separate guide gives an early-area example of three per piece. The sources do not establish one price that applies to every gear piece or every point in the story. Available stock and costs can vary, so the Tack Shop’s displayed price is the practical amount to plan around before you exchange plumes.

Think of a set as separate pieces, not necessarily one all-at-once purchase. The named Shinra Avian Helmet, Breastplate, and Greaves have individual listed costs, and the vendor interaction is an exchange for the equipment you choose. If you are short on plumes, you can focus on the piece you want first and return for other pieces after restoring more stops. No real-money purchase is needed to earn the plumes described here.

Not every item comes from the Tack Shop. Some equipment is awarded for quests or Chocobo races, and the Gi set uses a different in-game exchange at Esther’s Tack Shop. If you are collecting a particular set, check its listed source instead of spending time gathering plumes for an item that is earned another way.

At the Chocoboutique: equip and recolor

After obtaining a piece, interact with the Chocoboutique sign at the ranch to swap equipment pieces and change their colors. This is the step that changes the gear your mount is wearing; making a purchase at the Tack Shop alone does not equip it. The documented customization applies to the equipment’s color, not to dyeing the Chocobo’s feathers.

In practical terms, treat the two ranch interactions as separate stops in the process: use the Tack Shop when you want to spend plumes on available equipment, and use the Chocoboutique sign when you want to put owned equipment on your mount or adjust its colors. If you have already bought a piece but do not see the appearance change, check that you have used the boutique interaction rather than expecting the purchase itself to equip the item.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Color changes are about the gear. The available instructions support changing equipment colors, not changing the Chocobo’s feather color, so do not look for a bird-dye option in the boutique. For a look-focused setup, choose among the equipment and color choices that the sign offers.

How can I get gear that is not sold for Golden Plumes?

Check the reward source attached to the specific piece. The available gear includes shop purchases, quest rewards, and race rewards, so an empty or incomplete Tack Shop inventory does not mean the item cannot be obtained.

  • Race rewards: Individual pieces from the Debonair set are listed as Chocobo racing rewards.
  • Quest rewards: The Merc pieces are tied to the quest The Hardest Sell.
  • Rental-license reward: Tropical gear is tied to a Costa del Sol Chocobo Rental License.
  • Separate exchange: The Gi set is associated with Esther’s Tack Shop, a different in-game exchange from the ordinary Golden Plume purchases described above.

These sources matter if your aim is to collect a particular look rather than just outfit your mount quickly. Before farming more stops, identify whether the missing piece is a purchase, a quest reward, a race reward, or part of a separate exchange.

Use the item’s acquisition route as a filter. If you are after a Debonair piece, the relevant path is Chocobo racing; if you want Merc gear, check the quest The Hardest Sell; and if you are looking for Tropical gear, the listed connection is a Costa del Sol Chocobo Rental License. The Gi set is another exception because it is tied to Esther’s Tack Shop. These examples show why a single “collect plumes for every set” plan can waste time: a plume stockpile does not replace a race, quest, license, or separate exchange.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The sources identify these reward connections but do not provide a universal unlock checklist for every piece in every region. If a reward is not yet available, consider whether its associated activity or story milestone has been reached before concluding that the item is missing or incorrectly listed.

Does Chocobo Gear affect travel or racing?

For ordinary open-world travel, the cited gear guide describes the equipment as cosmetic. For Chocobo racing, pieces have racing stats and abilities, so compare those values when preparing for a race rather than choosing on appearance alone.

The racing benefits do not carry over to normal open-world travel. A decorative setup can therefore be a perfectly reasonable choice for exploration; gear selection matters differently when you are choosing pieces for racing. Racing gear and rewards are tied to racing access and story progress, so do not expect every racing-related item to be available immediately.

The cited location guide places the racing unlock at Chapter 9. That is a useful expectation if you are still earlier in the story: a racing reward or racing-focused setup may be unavailable until you reach the relevant point. The sources do not establish a quantified racing bonus for any item or a performance percentage to apply across races, so compare the stats and abilities actually listed for the pieces you own.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing gear for appearance

If your goal is to change how your mount looks while exploring, use the Chocoboutique to try the available equipment combinations and color choices. The gear guide supports recoloring the equipment itself, so treat color changes as a gear customization rather than a change to the bird’s natural appearance.

There is no need to optimize racing stats for a normal ride through the open world according to the cited gear guide. Pick the pieces and colors you like, then use the boutique to make the change. If a piece is not in your inventory, its source may be a shop, quest, race, or another exchange rather than an appearance-menu unlock.

Choosing gear for a race

When racing is available, assess each piece by its listed racing stats and abilities. There is no single quantified bonus established for all gear, and the pieces are not interchangeable in effect simply because they are all Chocobo equipment. Look at the actual item information and the race you are preparing for.

Race rewards can also be part of collection goals, as with the Debonair set. That makes racing relevant both for performance comparisons and for obtaining specific gear, but it does not change the distinction between racing and ordinary travel. Wait until racing is accessible in the story before planning around its rewards; the location guide places the unlock at Chapter 9.

Why can’t I customize my Chocobo yet?

The most common blockers are not having regional Chocobo access, lacking enough plumes for the item you want, or looking for a piece that is tied to story progress or a different reward source. Check which step of the process is missing rather than repeatedly interacting with the same menu.

  • You cannot call a Chocobo: Confirm that you have access to the wild Chocobo in the region where you are trying to use it. Square Enix describes calling a wild Chocobo within the region where it is caught.
  • You have not found gear to buy: Restore Chocobo Stop signs to earn Golden Plumes, then check the Tack Shop’s currently available inventory and displayed prices.
  • You bought gear but do not see it equipped: Visit the ranch’s Chocoboutique sign. The Tack Shop purchase and the equip interaction are separate.
  • A specific item is missing: Check whether it is a quest, race, rental-license, or separate-exchange reward rather than a standard plume purchase.
  • You are looking for racing advantages while exploring: Racing stats and abilities do not give those advantages to ordinary open-world travel.

The official feature confirmation is specific to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. It does not establish that the original Final Fantasy VII has an equivalent Chocoboutique or gear menu, so use Rebirth instructions only if that is the game you are playing.

If a Tack Shop does not show the piece you expected, first check story progress and the item’s source. Shop stock can vary with progress, and a piece connected to a race, quest, license, or separate exchange will not necessarily appear as a standard plume purchase. If you have enough plumes for one item but not another, compare the displayed costs rather than assuming all pieces have the same price.

If you are playing Rebirth but are not yet at the racing portion of the game, do not treat unavailable race equipment as a broken customization menu. The location guide places racing’s unlock at Chapter 9, while ordinary gear purchases and equipment customization are separate parts of the system. Likewise, if you are in the right game but the wrong region, confirm access to that region’s Chocobo before troubleshooting the ranch interaction.

How to get from a new mount to equipped gear

  1. Get access to the Chocobo for your current region. The introductory route starts in the Grasslands near Bill’s Ranch.
  2. Follow Chicabos to fallen Chocobo Stop signs. Repair each sign you find to earn a Golden Plume and open a fast-travel point.
  3. Visit a Tack Shop. Spend plumes on gear that is available and check the individual price before exchanging.
  4. Check the item’s reward source if it is absent. Some pieces come from races, quests, a rental license, or a separate exchange.
  5. Use the Chocoboutique sign at a ranch. Equip the purchased or earned pieces and adjust their colors there.
  6. Choose with the activity in mind. For exploration, gear is cosmetic; for racing, compare the pieces’ race stats and abilities.

For a complete set, keep track of which pieces you have bought or earned and which source remains for each missing item. The named sets do not all follow the same acquisition path, and the available shop inventory can depend on story progress.

A low-friction route is to start with the nearest available stop rather than trying to collect every plume in the game at once. Restore stops as you encounter Chicabos, check the Tack Shop for the gear you actually want, and use the displayed prices to decide whether to keep exploring. If the missing item is one of the named reward sets, change course to its associated activity instead of repeating the same shop visit.

Once you have the item, remember the final step: the Chocoboutique sign is where you equip and recolor it. This makes the whole route easy to check when something seems wrong: regional Chocobo access, a plume or reward source, purchase or reward claim, then boutique customization.

How the gear system fits into Rebirth

Rebirth’s customization is attached to its regional Chocobo and ranch systems rather than being a single universal mount-setting screen. Square Enix presents Chocobo equipment customization as a feature of Rebirth’s world, while the gameplay references describe the practical sequence of restoring stops, visiting Tack Shops, and using the Chocoboutique.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction is useful if you have seen a gear list or a price from a different point in the story. Shop stock can vary; rewards can be distributed across activities; and a racing piece’s value is not the same as its appearance value during travel. In practice, decide first whether you want a particular look, a racing setup, or a completionist collection, then follow the relevant route instead of assuming every piece is sold for the same currency.

For a straightforward appearance change, the stop-to-shop-to-boutique route is sufficient. For racing or full collection, use the item’s individual source and stats to guide what you do next.

Square Enix lists a physical standard edition of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth for PS5, but that is the game itself, not a separately purchasable Chocobo Gear accessory. The gear described here is obtained in-game through the relevant stop, shop, quest, race, license, or exchange. If you need the game, use the official Rebirth buy page to check the listed edition; there is no reason to treat a physical edition as a way to buy individual mount equipment.

Can I get every Chocobo Gear piece from one shop?

No. The gear inventory includes pieces earned through racing and quests, as well as equipment associated with a Costa del Sol Chocobo Rental License and a separate Gi-set exchange.

Where is the Chocoboutique, and how do I equip gear?

Use the Chocoboutique sign at a ranch. The Tack Shop sells or exchanges gear, while the Chocoboutique is a separate interaction for equipping pieces and changing their colors.

Can I change my Chocobo’s feather color?

The cited customization instructions support changing equipment colors, not dyeing the Chocobo’s feathers.

Does Chocobo Gear improve normal travel?

The cited gear guide describes open-world gear as cosmetic. Racing stats and abilities apply to Chocobo racing, not ordinary open-world travel.

When does Chocobo racing unlock?

The cited location guide places racing’s unlock at Chapter 9. Racing-related rewards may therefore require more story progress than basic stop repairs or shop visits.

How much does Chocobo Gear cost?

Prices vary by item and story progress. One inventory lists the Shinra Avian Helmet, Breastplate, and Greaves at two Golden Plumes each, while another 2024 guide gives an early-area example of three plumes per piece. Check the Tack Shop’s displayed cost.

Is Chocobo Gear available in the original Final Fantasy VII?

The official feature confirmation cited here is for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. It does not establish an equivalent Chocoboutique or gear menu in the original game.

The Bottom Line

In Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, follow Chicabos to fallen Chocobo Stop signs and repair them for Golden Plumes, then check a Tack Shop for gear and its current price. Use the ranch’s separate Chocoboutique sign to equip and recolor what you own. If a piece is missing, check whether it comes from a quest, race, rental license, or different exchange; racing stats matter for races, not ordinary travel.
