For the original 1996–1999 Resident Evil trilogy, the clearest legal modern route is a Windows PC release from GOG or a year-labeled Steam listing from Capcom. GOG also sells a three-game Resident Evil Bundle and a five-game Classic Bundle that adds Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil HD REMASTER. On current PlayStation hardware, Resident Evil Director’s Cut is listed for PS4 and PS5 as an individual purchase and in the PlayStation Plus Premium Classics Catalog.
Check the year and edition before paying: the newer Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 products are remakes, HD REMASTER is based on the 2002 mansion reimagining, and Resident Evil 4 (2005) is a different product from the newer Resident Evil 4 remake.

GOG individual releases
GOG’s Resident Evil listing identifies the original first game and states Windows 10/11 compatibility. It also lists support for modern controllers, including a compatible DualSense controller. GOG’s individual listings are sold as DRM-free PC games, so the purchase is not tied to a recurring membership.
Use the year and title shown on the store page when searching for the sequels: “Resident Evil 2 (1998)” and “Resident Evil 3 Nemesis (1999).” A result simply labeled Resident Evil 2 or Resident Evil 3 may instead be the later remake.
Capcom’s Steam listings
Capcom’s Resident Evil collection identifies the original PC products by year: Resident Evil (1996), Resident Evil 2 (1998) and Resident Evil 3 Nemesis (1999). Steam is a continuing storefront account purchase rather than a DRM-free offline installer, so check the product page’s current system requirements and installation terms before checkout.
Which GOG bundle should I choose?
Choose the three-game Resident Evil Bundle if you want only the original trilogy. Choose the five-game Classic Bundle if you also want Resident Evil 0 and the 2002-derived mansion game sold as Resident Evil HD REMASTER.

Resident Evil Classic Bundle
The Resident Evil Classic Bundle contains five games: the original trilogy, Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil HD REMASTER. GOG states that the bundle is DRM-free and can be installed with a fully offline installer without GOG Galaxy.
Do not read “HD REMASTER” as a high-resolution version of the 1996 game. GOG describes it as based on the reimagined 2002 mansion game. It belongs in the bundle as a related classic, but it does not replace the original release for a player seeking the 1996 design, script and presentation.
Is the GOG version the original or the remake?
The GOG listing for Resident Evil is the original PC edition, not the newer Resident Evil remake. The same year-label rule applies to the sequels: 1998 and 1999 identify the original Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, while the newer products are separate remakes.
There are three distinctions to check on any store page:
- Resident Evil (1996): the original first game, available as a modern Windows release on GOG and identified by Capcom’s year-labeled Steam catalog.
- Resident Evil Director’s Cut: a PlayStation-era edition of the first game, now offered as a converted PS4/PS5 product.

GOG’s offline installer is useful if you want to keep an installable copy outside a launcher. GOG’s statement about offline installation applies to the Classic Bundle and its listed products; do not assume that every Resident Evil edition on every storefront has identical controller support, installers or DRM terms.

What you need on Windows
- A Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC for the GOG original Resident Evil listing.
- A GOG or Steam account, depending on the storefront you select.
- Storage for the purchased game and any optional controller drivers or configuration software.
- A compatible PC controller if you prefer gamepad controls; GOG specifically lists modern-controller support for its original Resident Evil product.
How to avoid buying the wrong PC product
- Search the storefront for the full title, including the year: 1996, 1998, 1999 or 2005.
- Read the publisher and edition line. Capcom’s newer RE2 and RE3 products are remakes, not the PS1-era originals.
- For a bundle, open the included-games list and confirm whether it contains three games or five.
- Review the current operating-system requirements and installation terms before completing payment.
Is Resident Evil Director’s Cut on PS5?
Yes. The US PlayStation Store lists Resident Evil Director’s Cut for PS4 and PS5. PlayStation describes it as converted from the PlayStation version with newly added features, including rewind, quick save and visual filters.
This is a converted classic edition, not a claim that an original PS1 disc runs directly in a PS5. The store listing is the relevant modern-console purchase route.
Do I need PS Plus Premium?
No. PlayStation lists Director’s Cut as a separate purchase, and it is also available through the Premium Classics Catalog when included there. Essential and Extra do not include the Premium Classics Catalog. Catalog games can leave PlayStation Plus, so membership access is conditional and should not be treated as permanent ownership.

Where can I play the original Resident Evil 4 (2005)?
Capcom’s storefront lists resident evil 4（2005） as a separate Steam product from the newer Resident Evil 4. Select the 2005 label when you want the original fourth game. Selecting only “Resident Evil 4” can lead to the remake instead.
The year is the decisive identifier here, just as it is for the original trilogy. Confirm the product description and edition before purchase because the two games are different releases with different content and presentation.
What about Code: Veronica and other older versions?
The current evidence does not establish a specific modern storefront route for the original Code: Veronica. Capcom has announced Resident Evil Veronica, a remake of the original Code: Veronica, for 2027; that future remake does not tell you where the original can be bought today. The announcement is available from Capcom’s investor-relations site.
Similarly, this guide does not claim a present-day console listing for the original Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 or Code: Veronica beyond the verified PC routes above. Availability differs by region and platform, so do not infer that a title is available on PS4 or PS5 merely because another Resident Evil classic is.

A separate purchase is the more predictable choice when you want continuing access to a specific game. A subscription can be less expensive for short-term play, but access depends on the catalog, your active membership and the title remaining in the service.
