Use 100% infill selectively, not as a default. It is justified when a part must resist crushing, a small or thin region cannot accommodate sparse infill, a broad top surface needs dependable support, the design calls for internal cells or thermal mass, or the component is fully structural and takes shocks. For ordinary parts, begin with moderate infill and add perimeters when tensile or bending loads dominate. Solid infill consumes substantially more filament and print time, and it does not by itself guarantee a watertight part.

What is solid infill, and why is 100% not the normal setting?

Infill is the material printed inside the outer walls of a model. Solid infill means the slicer fills an internal region at 100% density rather than leaving a repeating pattern of air gaps. The setting can apply to an entire model, a selected zone, or only particular layers.

The primary job of infill is to support the top layers. Without an internal foundation, those layers must bridge empty space, which can produce sagging, rough surfaces or failed bridges. More infill puts that foundation closer to the top skin, but it does not remove the need to orient the part sensibly or tune speed and cooling for long unsupported spans.

Most models do not benefit enough from a completely filled interior to justify the cost. Prusa documentation describes 10–15% as sufficient for most models, while Prusa Research’s 2021 guidance presents 10–20% as the usual balance among strength, reliability, print time and filament use. Infill is only one strength control: walls (perimeters), orientation and material can matter more for a particular load.

When should you use solid infill?

1. When the part is loaded in compression

Choose dense or solid infill when the part is squeezed between other components. Feet, spacers, clamps, press fixtures and parts tightened by bolts can collapse or permanently deform if their interior is mostly air. Higher infill increases the amount of material carrying that compressive load and makes the part heavier and stiffer.

Check the load direction before changing density. If the part is pulled apart or bent, the outer walls usually carry more of the stress than the infill. In those cases, increasing perimeter count is generally a more efficient first move. A dense core can support a compression zone while the rest of the model remains at a lower density.

2. When a tiny, thin or complex region cannot use a normal infill pattern

Sparse patterns need enough room to form their intended lines. In a narrow boss, thin rib, small tab or intricate corner, the pattern may leave too little useful plastic. A locally solid region avoids those empty pockets and gives the feature continuous internal support.

PrusaSlicer’s solid infill threshold area is designed for this situation. It forces 100% infill in regions below the area you specify, rather than filling the entire model solid. This is especially useful for tiny and complex parts where a global 100% setting would waste material.

Inspect the sliced preview after changing the threshold. The threshold is based on the cross-sectional area available to the slicer, so a feature that looks large in three dimensions may still fall below the threshold at some layers. Increase the threshold only until the vulnerable features receive solid paths; an unnecessarily high value can turn much of the model into solid infill.

3. When a broad top surface needs a closer internal foundation

Large horizontal top faces expose the weakness of a sparse interior. The top skin has to span the gaps in the infill beneath it, and the farther apart those supports are, the greater the risk of drooping or a visibly uneven surface. Increasing infill, or making the layers directly beneath the top locally solid, shortens those spans.

Solid infill is not a substitute for bridge settings. For a long unsupported bridge, Prusa’s guidance is to change the model’s orientation when possible, tune print speed and cooling, or add supports for difficult spans. Use dense infill to support a top surface that has an internal foundation; do not expect it to make an isolated bridge reliable.

4. When the design calls for internal cells, thermal behavior or a specific weight

Sometimes the interior is part of the design rather than merely a way to save filament. A model may need a predictable mass, a dense insert, or separated internal cells. Prusa documents solid infill every X layers as a way to add strength or create distinct internal cells for thermal insulation.

Periodic solid layers can divide otherwise sparse sections without making every layer fully dense. Selected solid zones can also put material where heat must be retained or conducted, or where a component must have a particular balance of weight and stiffness. Treat the spacing and location as design variables: preview the cross-section to confirm that the solid layers actually separate the intended cells.

5. When the entire component is structural and exposed to shocks

A part that is integral to a mechanism and repeatedly hit, dropped or shock-loaded may justify a high-density core. FIRST Tech Challenge’s PLA guidance places fully structural, shock-loaded parts in an 80–100% infill range, alongside four alternating walls and five perimeters. That is an application range, not a guarantee for every printer.

The same guidance warns that, depending on printer tuning, 100% infill can be weaker than slightly lower infill. At extreme density, heat buildup, extrusion variation and internal stress can hurt layer quality. Validate the chosen setting with the actual printer, material and orientation before committing it to a safety-critical or competition part.

How much infill should you use for a strong 3D print?

Use the following ranges as starting points, then adjust for the load, wall count, orientation, top-surface span, material and printer tuning. The figures are not interchangeable guarantees: a 40% part with robust walls can outperform a 100% part with poor layer bonding.

Application Starting infill range How to interpret it
Most general models 10–15% Prusa’s current documentation describes this as sufficient for most models.
General strength and reliability balance 10–20% Prusa Research’s 2021 guidance presents this as the usual compromise among strength, print time and filament consumption.
Load-bearing or structural PLA parts 40–60% FIRST Tech Challenge guidance for parts carrying substantial loads.
Fully structural parts that take shocks 80–100% FIRST Tech Challenge guidance; verify the result on the real printer and material.

For ordinary parts, increasing perimeters is often the more efficient strength upgrade. Jakub Kočí of Prusa Research wrote in 2021 that “most of the time, it makes very little sense to set the infill density higher than 40 %.” The exceptions are the five situations above, where the interior itself must carry compression, support a surface, form cells or survive impact.

Should you add perimeters before increasing infill?

Usually, yes when the dominant load is tension, bending or impact at the outside of the part. Perimeters create a continuous shell around the model and align material with its surfaces, while infill mainly supports skins and carries loads through the interior.

Observed requirement First adjustment to consider Why
Part is squeezed by a bolt or press Increase infill in the compressed zone The interior must resist crushing.
Part bends or is pulled apart Add perimeters and review orientation Outer walls usually carry the tensile and bending stress.
Top face sags over a wide area Increase support beneath that face or add local solid layers The top skin needs closer internal support.
Part receives repeated shocks Use a high-density range plus robust walls, then test Both the shell and core contribute, and tuning can change the result.

Orientation can outweigh a density change. Printed layers are not equally strong in every direction, so place layer lines and walls to follow the principal loads whenever the design allows. If you cannot change orientation, a local solid region and additional walls can address the vulnerable section without making the whole model dense.

How do you apply solid infill only where it is needed?

Local settings preserve most of the time and filament savings of sparse infill while reinforcing a known weak area.

  1. Slice the model at your normal infill. Open the preview and identify thin features, unsupported top regions or sections that will be compressed.
  2. Use the solid-area rule for small features. In PrusaSlicer, open Print Settings, go to Infill, and set Solid infill threshold area. Start with a conservative threshold and inspect which regions become solid.
  3. Add a local modifier for a designed reinforcement. Assign a modifier mesh or selected region a higher infill value instead of changing the whole object. Keep the transition away from a sharp stress concentration where possible.
  4. Use periodic solid layers when cells or thermal separation are intentional. Set solid infill every X layers, then check the preview to confirm the spacing and location of each dividing layer.
  5. Preview every layer around the change. Look for missing paths, abrupt unsupported overhangs and a top skin that still spans a large gap. Re-slice after every density or modifier change.

For a one-off repair, a local modifier is preferable to a global 100% setting. If the entire part is truly structural, apply the higher density globally and test a representative section rather than assuming the slicer’s percentage predicts real-world strength.

Does 100% infill make a 3D print watertight?

No. A fully dense infill setting does not guarantee a leak-free part. Watertightness depends on geometry, wall thickness, layer height, extrusion overlap, seam placement and material and process tuning.

Thick walls that require infill can also waste material and create irregular internal voids where leaks or contamination develop. A part can appear solid in the slicer preview yet contain microscopic gaps caused by under-extrusion, imperfect overlap or a seam path. If fluid containment matters, design continuous walls and validate the finished part with the intended fluid and pressure rather than relying on the infill percentage.

What are the costs and failure modes of solid infill?

Trade-off or symptom What causes it Practical response
Much longer print and greater filament use Every internal line is replaced by material Apply 100% only to the load-bearing zone, or use periodic solid layers.
Surface quality becomes worse Heat accumulation and dense internal paths can affect the top skin Preview the top layers, tune cooling and validate the material profile.
Part is still weak despite 100% infill Load direction, layer bonding, orientation or walls are limiting strength Review orientation and perimeter count before adding more density.
Long bridge still sags Infill does not create support under an isolated span Reorient, tune bridge speed and cooling, or add supports.
Internal leaks or contamination paths Irregular voids, seams or insufficient overlap Improve wall and extrusion settings and test the finished geometry.

Material choice and printer calibration set the ceiling for every density setting. A high-density profile that is poorly tuned can produce more heat and stress without producing a stronger part. Record the material, orientation, wall count and infill together when evaluating a design so that a change in one variable is not mistaken for a density effect.

How can you decide quickly whether 100% infill is justified?

  • Is the interior being crushed, or is the load carried mainly by the outer shell?
  • Does a feature become too small for a reliable sparse pattern?
  • Will a broad top face span large gaps after slicing?
  • Does the design require internal cells, thermal separation or a specified mass?
  • Will the part take shocks as an integral structural component?
  • Have you tried orientation and additional perimeters before making the whole model solid?
  • Can you test the chosen density with the exact material and printer that will make production parts?

If the answers point to a localized problem, reinforce that region. Reserve global 100% infill for parts whose interior has a real structural, thermal or mass requirement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 100% infill the same as a solid CAD body?

Not necessarily. The slicer still builds the object from perimeter, top, bottom and infill paths, and extrusion variation can leave tiny discontinuities even when the nominal density is 100%. Treat “100%” as a toolpath instruction, not a laboratory guarantee of zero voids.

Does a 50% infill setting use exactly half as much filament as 100%?

No. Filament use also includes perimeters, top and bottom skins, supports, brims and travel-related purges. The relationship between the percentage shown in the slicer and total spool consumption is therefore not linear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I know whether a feature is below the solid-infill threshold area?

Use the slicer’s layer preview rather than measuring the finished part by eye. Step through the layers at the feature and check whether the region changes to a fully filled pattern after you alter the threshold.

Does the infill pattern still matter at 100% density?

Its visible pattern matters less because the available space is filled, but the resulting toolpaths can still affect heat distribution, print time and how paths meet the walls. Previewing the actual layers is more informative than choosing a pattern name alone.
