If a breaker trips once after several appliances have been running, switch off or unplug some of the loads and, only if there are no warning signs, try resetting it once. If it trips again, trips repeatedly, or the cause is unclear, stop resetting it and call a qualified electrician. Burning smells, smoke, sparks, heat, buzzing, flickering lights, or a tingling shock call for prompt professional attention; leave and contact emergency services if there is active smoke or fire.
Decide how urgently to get help
| What happened | What to do |
|---|---|
| One trip after several appliances were operating, with no warning signs | Turn off or unplug loads on the circuit. You may make one reset attempt. If it trips again, contact an electrician. |
| The breaker trips again, trips frequently, will not stay reset, or has no clear temporary cause | Stop trying to reset it and arrange diagnosis by a qualified electrician. Renters should notify their landlord where appropriate; landlord and tenant responsibilities vary by location. |
| Burning or rubbery odor, smoke, sparks, sizzling or buzzing, a warm, hot or discolored outlet or switch, flickering or dimming lights, or a tingling shock | Stop using the affected outlet or appliance and seek prompt professional help. If there is active smoke or fire, leave and contact emergency services. |
Do not wait for a second trip when warning signs are present. A breaker that trips repeatedly needs diagnosis, even if power returns after a reset.
What a tripping breaker can indicate
A breaker interrupts current when it detects a condition beyond its protective limits. That can be the device doing its job, not proof that the breaker itself is defective. Possible causes include too many appliances drawing power on one circuit, a malfunctioning appliance, a short circuit, a ground fault, an arc fault, wiring trouble, or a defective breaker. The trip alone cannot identify which one is responsible.
When one appliance seems to trigger it
If the trip occurs whenever a particular appliance is used, stop using that appliance and have it checked or replaced as appropriate. The pattern does not establish that the breaker is bad, and repeatedly reconnecting the appliance to see what happens is not a safe diagnostic method.

When an AFCI or GFCI trips
An arc-fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) is designed to detect certain arc-fault conditions associated with damaged, overheated, or stressed wiring or devices. A ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) detects leakage current associated with a ground fault and interrupts power to reduce shock danger. Either device may trip because it detects a hazard; repeated trips need diagnosis rather than an assumption that the device is merely nuisance-tripping.
In ESFI’s 2025 survey of electrical professionals in Georgia and South Carolina, respondents attributed 84% of AFCI-related tripping service calls to arc faults. That is a finding about those contractors’ service calls, not the probability that an individual household trip is an arc fault. ESFI’s 2025 survey also reported that 37% of surveyed contractors’ service calls involved tripped breakers or fuses. The comparable ESFI 2024 survey was conducted in California: it reported 54% of contractor service calls involved tripped breakers or fuses, and 74% of contractors saw evidence of dangerous arcing in AFCI-related service calls. These are survey findings tied to their stated year, geography, and respondent context—not national household rates.

One cautious reset: what you can do
ESFI’s consumer guidance describes a single reset attempt after turning off or unplugging appliances on the circuit. Do not attempt even that reset if there is smoke, a burning smell, sparks, unusual heat, buzzing, or another warning sign.
- Turn off or unplug appliances on the affected circuit, if it is safe to do so.
- Identify the tripped breaker. If you cannot confidently identify it, do not open the panel or investigate inside it.
- Move the breaker handle fully to OFF, then to ON. If it trips again or will not stay on, leave it alone and contact an electrician.
Do not repeatedly reset the breaker, bypass protective devices, open the panel interior, or attempt wiring repairs. Never replace a breaker or fuse with a higher-amperage one: the breaker is sized to protect the circuit wiring, and a higher rating can leave that wiring without the intended protection.

What to tell the electrician
Give the electrician the observations that may help narrow down the problem without trying to diagnose or repair it yourself:
- Whether the trip happened once or has recurred, and whether the breaker stayed on after a reset.
- Which appliances were running and whether one particular appliance appears to trigger the trip.
- Whether lights flickered or dimmed, or you noticed odor, unusual heat, discoloration, buzzing, sparks, smoke, or a tingling shock.
- Whether the affected device is identified as an AFCI or GFCI, if that is visible without opening the panel.
Leave the affected outlet or appliance out of use when warning signs are present. Do not touch or approach equipment that is smoking, sparking, or visibly damaged.
