The custom spread gradually as electric lighting became more accessible. The White House followed a separate timeline, with its first known tree in 1889 and documentation suggesting its first electrically lit family tree came in 1894.
1882: Edward Johnson’s electric Christmas tree
The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History identifies the tree in Edward Johnson’s home as the first Christmas tree known to use electric lights. Johnson was vice president of the Edison Company; Smithsonian Magazine places the display in his New York City townhouse and describes the lights as experimental. That “first known” wording matters: it identifies the earliest documented example in these accounts, not the moment electric lights became a common Christmas decoration. Electricity was not yet routinely available in homes, and early strings were costly.
Why electric tree lights took time to catch on
Johnson’s display came before ordinary household access to electric lighting. The Smithsonian’s museum history describes a broader trend: as more people adopted electric light, the prices of lamps and electricity fell. That helps explain how an unusual display could eventually become more accessible; it does not mean Christmas lights themselves drove electrification.

Smithsonian Magazine’s 2016 history gives two examples of early prices: a 16-bulb string cost $12 in 1900, while a 16-foot string cost $1.75 in 1914. These are period prices, not present-day equivalents. The magazine says colored bulbs and cones were widespread by the 1930s, marking a later stage in the custom’s development. The White House had its own timeline
The White House’s first known Christmas tree and its first electrically lit tree were different events. The White House Historical Association says the first known tree was put up in 1889 for President Benjamin Harrison’s family. It stood in the Second Floor Oval Room and was decorated with candles for the Harrison grandchildren.

Electric lighting arrived at the White House in 1891, when the Edison Company installed a generator serving both the White House and the neighboring State, War & Navy Building. Electric light was initially intended to supplement gaslight. The Association says documentation suggests electric lights were first used on a family tree there in 1894, during Grover Cleveland’s presidency. The Association also notes that not every first family put up a tree. Whether a family had children, its holiday practices, and whether it was in residence could affect the custom, so the first known tree does not establish an annual tradition beginning in 1889.

1923: Christmas tree lighting becomes a national ceremony
In 1923, President Calvin Coolidge presided over the first National Christmas Tree lighting ceremony on the Ellipse, according to the White House Historical Association. That public event was another milestone, but it came decades after Johnson’s 1882 electric tree and should not be confused with the first use of electric lights on a Christmas tree.
