Usually, no. Sony says most free-to-play PlayStation games—including Fortnite, Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone—do not require a PlayStation Plus membership for online multiplayer. However, “free” can also mean a game temporarily offered at no charge, included with a subscription, or a trial; those cases can have different rules. For any PS4 or PS5 title, open its PlayStation Store page in your region and check the listing’s online-play requirement before assuming you can play without Plus.
Paid games are different: PlayStation says a majority of purchased titles require Plus for online multiplayer. Any of the three current plans—Essential, Extra or Premium—includes the baseline online-multiplayer benefit, so you do not need Extra or Premium just to unlock multiplayer.
Do free-to-play PlayStation games need PS Plus for online multiplayer?
Most genuinely free-to-play games do not. PlayStation’s US PlayStation Plus FAQ explicitly names Fortnite, Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone as examples that can be played online without a membership. That is a general rule, not a guarantee that every game with a “Free” button is exempt.

A free-to-play game normally costs nothing to download and keeps its core online service open without requiring Plus. You still need a PlayStation Network account, an internet connection and any account permissions the game or console requires. Sony can also change a title’s conditions, so the individual Store listing remains the authoritative check.

PlayStation’s wording is “most,” not “all,” and it does not publish a percentage of exempt games. Do not turn that qualitative statement into a numerical claim.

The US Store’s Free to Play category also displays games such as Rocket League, Marvel Rivals, Fall Guys and Warframe. That category is useful for discovery, but category placement alone is not a contractual promise about online-play requirements. Open each game’s own page before you make a purchasing or subscription decision.
What does “free” mean on the PlayStation Store?
“Free” is not one licensing category. Distinguish a genuinely free-to-play game from a Plus benefit, a limited trial and a game that is merely discounted to zero for a promotion.
Free-to-play
The game can generally be downloaded and played without buying the software. For the examples Sony names, online multiplayer is available without Plus. Optional purchases, battle passes or member bonus items do not change that basic access rule.

Monthly games claimed through Plus
A game you claim as a monthly PlayStation Plus benefit is tied to your membership entitlement. It may remain installed on your console, but access normally depends on an active Plus subscription and the game remaining in your claimed library under the service’s terms. “I downloaded it for free” therefore does not prove that the title is a free-to-play exemption.

A trial, weekend event or temporary giveaway can have its own expiration date and online requirements. Read the offer’s conditions rather than treating a temporary zero-price listing as equivalent to a permanently free-to-play game.
Free add-ons and bonus packs
A free downloadable content pack, cosmetic bundle or Plus-exclusive bonus is not the same thing as a free game. It also does not prove that the underlying game requires Plus—or that it does not.
Do paid PlayStation games require PS Plus for online multiplayer?
Most purchased games do require a membership for online multiplayer. That includes games bought digitally or on disc, although individual titles can set their own exceptions. PlayStation’s support guidance says Essential, Extra and Premium all include online multiplayer; the higher tiers are not required merely to play a purchased game online.
Separate the access question from the catalog question:
- Essential: provides the baseline Plus benefits, including online multiplayer.
- Extra: includes the Essential benefits and adds access to a Game Catalog. Catalog availability changes and is not a prerequisite for multiplayer in a game you already own.
- Premium: includes the lower-tier benefits and additional features such as selected classic titles, trials and cloud streaming where offered. Cloud streaming is an extra feature, not a requirement for ordinary online multiplayer.
Before subscribing, decide whether you need only online access, the monthly-game entitlement, a catalog, trials or streaming. A higher tier does not remove a game’s separate account, age or regional restrictions.

How can you check whether your exact game needs Plus?
Use the game’s own Store listing in the account’s region. Follow these steps on a PS5, PS4 or the web Store:
- Search for the exact title, not just the franchise name. Select the PS4 or PS5 edition you intend to play.
- Confirm whether the page describes the game as free-to-play, a trial, a Plus benefit or a normal purchase.
- Read the product information for “PS Plus required for online play” or equivalent online-multiplayer wording. The label can differ slightly between console and web interfaces.
- Check the account and region. A US listing may not match the rules, catalog or availability shown in another country.
- If the page is ambiguous, contact PlayStation Support or the game publisher before paying for a subscription. Do not infer an exemption from a “Free to Play” category tile alone.
On a console, you can reach the listing from the game’s tile by opening its options or Store link, then reading the product details. On the web, sign in to the same regional PlayStation Store account you use on the console. Store text can change when a title moves between editions or platforms.
Can a Plus bonus pack tell you whether multiplayer is free?
No. PlayStation offers member-exclusive content for some free-to-play games while separately stating that its named free-to-play examples do not require Plus for online play. A cosmetic pack, weapon bundle, character skin or other bonus is an optional membership benefit, not proof that the game’s servers are paywalled.
Use two separate questions: “Can I connect to this game without Plus?” and “What extra content do I receive as a Plus member?” The first is answered by the game’s online requirement; the second concerns entitlements and promotions that may come and go.
What do you still need if Plus is not required?
No subscription does not mean no conditions. You generally need all of the following:
- A PS4 or PS5 connected to the internet. A wired Ethernet connection can be useful when Wi-Fi is unreliable, but it does not substitute for any membership requirement.
- A PlayStation Network account that can sign in and accept the game’s terms.
- The game’s current software, system updates and any required publisher account or two-factor sign-in.
- An account age that is permitted to use the game’s network features. Family settings, communication controls and local laws can restrict online functions even when Plus is not required.
- Enough storage and bandwidth to download updates. A game can be free to download while still receiving large patches.
If multiplayer is blocked, first check the Store requirement, then confirm that the console is online, the game is updated and the account is allowed to use network features. A Plus prompt can also appear when you select a paid game’s online mode even though a separate free-to-play title on the same console works without it.

Does PlayStation Portal change the Plus requirement?
No. Remote Play and online multiplayer are separate services. PlayStation says Remote Play itself does not require Plus. A PlayStation Portal can stream the experience from a compatible PS5, but it does not cancel a game’s own online-multiplayer requirement.

For example, if a paid game requires Plus when launched on the PS5, launching that same game through Remote Play does not create an exemption. Conversely, a free-to-play game that does not require Plus remains subject to its normal account and network conditions when accessed remotely.

What should you do when a free game still asks for Plus?
Work through the prompt rather than immediately subscribing:
- Identify the title and edition. A paid sequel, campaign mode or bundled edition may be selected instead of the free-to-play client.
- Recheck the Store page. Look for the online-play requirement on the exact PS4 or PS5 listing and in your region.
- Confirm the account. Sign out and back in if the console is using a child, guest or different regional account. Family restrictions can prevent network access.
- Update and restart. Install system and game updates, then restart the console and router. A sign-in or service outage can resemble a subscription lock.
- Check the service status and publisher account. Free-to-play access does not bypass a publisher’s authentication, age gate or outage.
- Escalate with evidence. If the listing says Plus is not required but the console still blocks play, save a screenshot of the listing and contact PlayStation Support or the game’s publisher.
Do not purchase Plus solely because a generic system message appears. The exact game page and account status determine whether the prompt is a genuine requirement, a temporary entitlement problem or a different edition’s rule.
Is PS Plus worth buying if your free game works without it?
Only if you want Plus benefits beyond that game. For a player whose only goal is online multiplayer in one of Sony’s exempt free-to-play examples, a subscription is not needed for that access. Plus can still be useful for online play in purchased games, monthly-game entitlements, cloud saves and other plan benefits, subject to the current terms.

Compare your library rather than the free game alone. If you regularly play paid titles online, Essential may cover the baseline requirement. Extra or Premium make sense only when their additional catalog, classic games, trials or streaming features justify the higher plan for your region and usage.
Membership terms, catalogs and regional availability change. Check the current PlayStation Plus support page before subscribing, and avoid relying on an old price or an exhaustive list of exempt games.
Optional voice-chat equipment for PS5 players
A headset is not part of the Plus requirement. If you want voice chat while playing a free-to-play title, Sony documents the PULSE Elite wireless headset as compatible with PS5 and equipped with a retractable microphone. It is optional hardware: it neither grants multiplayer access nor replaces Plus when a paid game requires membership. A standard wired headset or the DualSense controller’s built-in microphone can serve the same basic communication purpose.
