There is no single per-response price for a WhatsApp AI auto-responder. Estimate the monthly bill by adding Meta’s applicable delivered-message charges, any WhatsApp provider fees, and separate AI, automation, and hosting costs. Meta’s rate depends on the recipient’s market and message category, and current service-message billing is unclear: WhatsApp’s pricing page and Twilio’s September 2026 pricing information conflict.

How much does WhatsApp Business API cost per message?

WhatsApp Business Platform billing is not simply a flat account subscription. WhatsApp says it charges when a message is delivered, not when it is sent, and that rates vary by the recipient’s market and the message category. Its pricing page lists four categories: marketing, utility, authentication, and service. WhatsApp Business Platform pricing

That means an AI-generated reply does not have one automatic rate. The applicable charge depends on how the message is categorized, where the recipient is, and the current rate-card rules. WhatsApp describes volume tiers for utility and authentication messages, so businesses with enough eligible traffic may have different rates at higher volumes. Check the live rate card or calculator for your destination mix, currency, category, and tier rather than applying one figure to every conversation.

Service replies have a current pricing discrepancy

WhatsApp’s pricing page currently says service messages are uncharged and describes a 24-hour customer-service window. Twilio’s pricing page, marked current as of September 2026, includes a Meta service-message fee in its calculator. Those claims conflict, and the official rate-card endpoint could not be confirmed. As of October 4, 2026, do not assume that replies inside the customer-service window are free; verify the current official rate for each relevant market before forecasting costs.

WhatsApp identifies customer-service chatbots and managed live chat as service-message use cases. WhatsApp customer-service messages That establishes that AI-assisted customer support is a supported use case, not that every AI reply has a universal or necessarily free rate.

Is WhatsApp API free for AI chatbot replies?

Not necessarily. The AI itself does not determine whether a WhatsApp message is free. Meta’s category and destination-market rules apply, and the current treatment of service messages needs checking because WhatsApp’s pricing page and Twilio’s September 2026 pricing information disagree.

WhatsApp’s pricing page also describes a 72-hour free-entry period after qualifying click-to-WhatsApp ads or actions from Facebook Page buttons. Treat that as a specific eligibility rule, not as a general free allowance for AI replies. Confirm whether the entry point and messages qualify under the live policy before including any allowance in an estimate.

Does Twilio charge extra for WhatsApp messages?

Yes. Twilio publishes its own WhatsApp fee of $0.005 per inbound or outbound message, in addition to applicable Meta charges. Twilio marks its pricing page current as of September 2026. This is Twilio’s provider fee, not a universal fee for WhatsApp providers or a replacement for Meta’s market- and category-specific charges. Twilio WhatsApp Messaging Pricing

Twilio’s page also displays Meta fee examples of $0.0034 per message for some utility, authentication, and service cases. Those examples are not universal Meta rates: the applicable market and category matter, and the service-message example sits within the unresolved discrepancy described above. Do not use that number as a global rate for AI replies.

How much does a WhatsApp AI auto-responder cost per month?

The reviewed pricing sources do not establish a dependable universal monthly price for an AI auto-responder. A useful estimate keeps the following cost lines separate:

  1. Meta message charges: Forecast delivered outbound messages by recipient market and category, then apply the current official rates and any applicable volume tier or qualifying allowance.
  2. Provider fees: Add the provider’s charges, including inbound traffic where applicable. For Twilio, the published fee is $0.005 per inbound or outbound message; another provider may price differently.
  3. AI and automation: Add the model-inference, orchestration or automation software, hosting, and integration costs quoted by the vendors you plan to use. The WhatsApp and Twilio pricing sources do not set these prices.

For example, a business using Twilio should count both inbound and outbound messages for Twilio’s per-message fee, then separately calculate applicable Meta charges for delivered messages. It should not treat the Twilio fee as the whole WhatsApp bill or assume every customer-service reply is currently free.

What to compare when estimating costs

Before choosing a direct integration or a managed provider, compare the items that can change the total:

  • Meta’s current rate for each destination market and message category.
  • Whether service replies incur a Meta charge, any qualifying free allowance, and the effective date of the applicable rule.
  • Provider charges per inbound and outbound message, plus any fixed platform or add-on fees.
  • Eligible volume tiers, supported markets, and how message usage is reported.
  • Separate AI-model, orchestration, hosting, and software pricing.
  • The operational trade-off between integration effort and managed infrastructure; the pricing information cited here does not establish one option as the better choice for every business.
