Use WhatsApp’s built-in cloud backup, then restore it during the first setup screen on the replacement phone. Android saves the backup to the Google Account associated with WhatsApp; iPhone uses iCloud. A successful restore requires the same WhatsApp phone number and the same cloud account that created the backup. Reinstall WhatsApp if necessary, verify that number, and accept the restore prompt during initial setup—there is no restore control inside the Chat Backup settings page. For stronger protection, enable end-to-end encrypted backup and preserve its passkey, password, or 64-digit key somewhere safe, because WhatsApp cannot recover a lost credential.
This guide covers Android and iPhone procedures, account and storage requirements, encrypted backups, cross-platform moves, and practical fixes for stalled or missing backups.
What does a WhatsApp backup contain, and where is it stored?
A WhatsApp backup is a cloud copy of your chats and the media included in those chats. Android backups use the Google Account selected in WhatsApp, while iPhone backups use iCloud. The cloud copy is separate from the chat database currently on your phone, so a phone replacement or reset depends on completing a successful backup first.

- iPhone destination: iCloud, with iCloud Drive enabled and WhatsApp allowed to use iCloud Drive.
- Identity match: WhatsApp ties the backup to the phone number and cloud account used when the backup was created.
- Cloud history: each new backup replaces the previous cloud copy. WhatsApp says an Android backup that has not been updated for five months may be automatically deleted.
Because the latest successful upload becomes the restore point, run a manual backup immediately before changing phones. Messages or media added after that upload are not part of the cloud copy.

How do I back up WhatsApp on Android?
Prepare the phone with a signed-in Google Account, Google Play services, enough free device and Google Account storage, and a stable internet connection. Then create the backup from WhatsApp’s Chat backup screen.
Set up the Android backup destination
- Open WhatsApp and tap Settings > Chats > Chat backup.
- Tap Back up to your Google Account.
- Choose a schedule: Daily, Weekly, Monthly, or a manual backup option.
- Select the Google Account that should hold the backup. Confirm that it is the account you will use on the replacement Android phone.
- Decide whether to include videos. Videos can be restored with the chat, but they can substantially increase the upload size, storage consumption, and mobile-data use.
- Tap Back up to create the newest restore point. Keep the phone powered and connected until the upload finishes.
A schedule protects against forgetting, but it does not guarantee that the newest messages are already in the cloud. The manual Back up action is the appropriate final step before a factory reset, repair, or phone change.
What can stop an Android backup?
- Insufficient Google Account storage: cloud capacity limits can prevent the upload from completing.
- Insufficient phone storage: WhatsApp may need working space while it prepares the backup.
- Missing Google Play services: install or update the service before retrying.
- Unstable connectivity: a changing Wi-Fi or mobile connection can interrupt a large upload.
- Oversized media: including videos increases the amount of data that must be uploaded.
If the upload fails, resolve storage or connectivity first, reopen the Chat backup page, and run another manual backup. Do not assume that seeing an old backup date means the latest attempt succeeded.

On iPhone, WhatsApp stores the backup in iCloud. Sign in to the intended Apple account, enable iCloud Drive, allow WhatsApp under iCloud Drive apps, and leave enough free iCloud capacity for the operation.
Enable iCloud access
- Open the iPhone’s Settings app and sign in to iCloud with the account that should contain the backup.
- Turn on iCloud Drive.
- In the iCloud Drive app list, allow WhatsApp.
- Return to WhatsApp and open Settings > Chats > Chat Backup.
Run a one-time or recurring backup
- Tap Back Up Now to create an immediate copy.
- For automatic copies, tap Auto Backup and choose the available recurring schedule.
- Keep the iPhone on a stable connection and powered until the upload completes.
WhatsApp’s troubleshooting guidance says an iPhone should have available iCloud storage equal to at least 2.05 times the backup size for backup or restore operations. This is free space in iCloud, not merely the total capacity shown on the account. If the backup is large, delete or move unneeded iCloud data or obtain additional iCloud capacity before trying again.
How do I restore WhatsApp chats on a new or reset phone?
Restore happens during WhatsApp’s initial setup after installation or reinstallation. The Chat Backup settings page displays backup options; it does not contain a separate restore button.
Restore on Android
- Install WhatsApp on the new or reset Android phone.
- Sign in to the same Google Account that contains the backup.
- Open WhatsApp and verify the same phone number used to create the backup.
- When WhatsApp detects the cloud copy, follow the on-screen restore prompt.
- Allow the chat database to finish restoring. Media may continue downloading after the text chats appear, especially when the backup contains videos or many images.
Restore on iPhone
- Sign in to the same iCloud/Apple account used for the original backup and confirm that iCloud Drive is enabled for WhatsApp.
- Install or reinstall WhatsApp.
- Verify the original WhatsApp phone number.
- Accept the restore prompt during initial setup and wait for the transfer to complete.
If you finish setup without accepting the prompt, uninstalling and reinstalling WhatsApp is the documented way to return to the initial restore flow. First confirm that the desired cloud copy still exists and that the phone has enough free space.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
“Unfortunately, we can’t restore your chats for you because your chat history isn’t stored on our servers.” — WhatsApp Help Center, “Can’t back up or restore your chat history.”
This explains why WhatsApp support cannot simply send a missing history back to the phone: restoration depends on the cloud copy available through the matching account and number.
Why do the phone number and cloud account have to match?
WhatsApp uses both pieces of information to identify the backup. A correct Google Account on Android or iCloud account on iPhone is not enough if WhatsApp is verified with a different number, and the correct number will not help if the phone is signed in to a different cloud account.
- Before switching phones, write down the exact phone number currently registered in WhatsApp.
- On Android, check the Google Account shown in Settings > Chats > Chat backup.
- On iPhone, confirm the Apple account and iCloud Drive state in iOS Settings.
- Use those same credentials during setup on the new device.
If WhatsApp does not find a backup, stop before creating a new empty backup on the replacement phone. A new backup can overwrite the previous cloud copy, removing the restore point you were trying to recover.
What is different about Android and iPhone WhatsApp backups?
The basic sequence is similar—create a cloud copy, then restore it during initial setup—but the cloud destination, storage rules, and account checks differ.
| Item | Android | iPhone |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud destination | Google Account storage | iCloud storage |
| Required account during restore | The same Google Account that created the backup | The same iCloud/Apple account that created the backup |
| WhatsApp identity | The same WhatsApp phone number is required | |

How do I encrypt my WhatsApp cloud backup?
End-to-end encrypted backup adds protection to the copy stored in Google Drive or iCloud. It is optional, and it is separate from the normal WhatsApp message encryption that protects conversations while they are sent.
- In WhatsApp, open Settings > Chats > Chat backup.
- Tap End-to-end encrypted backup.
- Choose the available protection method: a passkey, a password, or a generated 64-digit encryption key.
- Complete the confirmation steps and store the credential in a secure place before leaving the screen.
Which encrypted-backup credential should I choose?
- Passkey: on supported devices, authentication can use a fingerprint, face recognition, or the device screen lock.
- Password: create a unique password and save it in a reputable password manager or another secure system.
- 64-digit key: WhatsApp generates the key; record it accurately and protect it from unauthorized access.
WhatsApp says it cannot send you a copy, reset the password, or restore an encrypted backup when the password or key is lost. Treat the credential like the only key to that protected cloud copy: save it before a phone reset, and do not rely on memory alone.

Will encryption change the restore process?
The restore still begins during initial WhatsApp setup with the matching phone number and cloud account. When WhatsApp asks for the encrypted-backup credential, enter the passkey, password, or 64-digit key associated with that backup; without it, the protected copy cannot be decrypted by WhatsApp.

Can I move WhatsApp chats directly from Android to iPhone, or iPhone to Android?
Do not treat a Google Account backup and an iCloud backup as interchangeable. The documented cloud-restore process is platform-specific: Android restores from its Google Account backup, and iPhone restores from iCloud.
A cross-platform move therefore needs a transfer flow that WhatsApp explicitly supports for the devices and software versions involved. The backup instructions alone do not promise that an Android cloud backup can be restored directly on iPhone, or that an iCloud backup can be restored directly on Android. Before erasing the old phone, preserve the original chats and verify that the chosen transfer process has completed on the new platform.
- Keep the old phone intact until chats are visible and usable on the new phone.
- Use the same WhatsApp number during the transfer unless WhatsApp’s supported account-change procedure says otherwise.
- Do not create a blank backup on the destination phone while troubleshooting; it can replace the cloud copy you still need.
- After the move, make a fresh backup using the destination platform’s cloud service.
Why is my WhatsApp backup stuck or missing?
Most failures come from storage, account mismatch, interrupted connectivity, outdated software, or an incomplete cloud copy. Work through the checks in order rather than repeatedly starting uploads under the same conditions.
1. Verify the account and number
Check the phone number shown in WhatsApp and compare the selected Google Account or iCloud account with the one used on the old phone. A restore prompt will not appear for an unrelated account or number.
2. Check free storage in both places
- On Android, free space on the phone and in the Google Account.
- On iPhone, free space on the phone and in iCloud. For an iPhone backup or restore, WhatsApp’s guidance calls for at least 2.05 times the backup size available in iCloud.
Videos are a common reason a backup grows unexpectedly. Excluding them can make the first successful backup smaller, after which you can decide whether their larger storage and data cost is worthwhile.
3. Stabilize the connection and power
Use reliable Wi-Fi, keep the device connected to power, and avoid switching between networks while the operation is running. Large uploads and restores are more vulnerable to an interrupted connection than a small text-only copy.

4. Update the software components
Install the current available WhatsApp update, update iOS or Android, and on Android update Google Play services. Restart the phone after updating, then retry the manual backup.
5. Consider overwrite or corruption
Each new cloud backup replaces the previous one, so an unsuccessful attempt followed by a later successful but incomplete copy may leave less history than expected. WhatsApp may also be unable to recover a backup that is corrupted or incomplete. If the old phone still opens the chats, create a clean manual backup from it before attempting another restore.

6. Re-enter the restore flow
If the backup is available but you skipped the prompt, uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp, then verify the matching number and account during setup. Do not look for a restore control in Settings > Chats > Chat backup; that screen manages backups and schedules only.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I do before wiping or trading in my old phone?
Use this checklist while the old phone still contains the complete conversation history:
- Open WhatsApp’s Chat backup screen and note the selected cloud account.
- Run a manual backup and wait for the displayed completion time or status to update.
- Confirm that the cloud account has enough free space for the backup.
- If end-to-end encrypted backup is enabled, verify that the passkey, password, or 64-digit key is stored securely and can be accessed on the new phone.
- Keep the old phone charged and untouched until the new phone has restored the chats and important media.
- Only then sign out, reset, recycle, or hand over the old device.
This sequence protects against the two failures that are hardest to reverse: erasing the only complete local copy and losing the credential required to decrypt the cloud copy.
What are the limits of WhatsApp chat backup?
A backup is not an unlimited archive with selectable historical versions. WhatsApp’s documented behavior is that each new backup overwrites the previous cloud copy, and an Android backup that is not updated for five months may be deleted automatically. A corrupted or incomplete copy may be unrecoverable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCloud restoration also does not bypass identity checks. WhatsApp needs the same phone number and the account that owns the backup, and encrypted backups additionally require the credential chosen when encryption was enabled. If any of those pieces are unavailable, WhatsApp cannot retrieve the chats from its own servers because the chat history is not stored there.

Frequently asked questions
Why are only some recent messages missing after a restore?
The restored copy reflects the last backup that actually finished uploading, not every message that existed on the old phone. Messages sent after that successful upload were never included, and a later backup may have replaced an earlier one.
Can I restore an encrypted backup without the password or key?
No. WhatsApp states that it cannot reset or recover the passkey, password, or 64-digit key used for an end-to-end encrypted backup. Search your securely stored credential before deleting or resetting the old phone.
Is there a way to select yesterday’s cloud backup instead of today’s?
WhatsApp’s documented cloud behavior is overwrite-based: each new backup replaces the prior one. The normal restore flow does not present a version picker, so preserve the old phone’s local chats if you need to attempt recovery before another backup is made.

What if WhatsApp finds no backup even though I remember making one?
Recheck the exact phone number, Google Account or iCloud account, and available storage, then make sure you are at the initial setup stage after reinstalling WhatsApp. On iPhone, also confirm that iCloud Drive and WhatsApp’s iCloud permission are enabled; on Android, confirm Google Play services is installed.
Should I erase the old phone as soon as the restore starts?
No. Wait until the chats are visible on the new phone and the media you need has finished downloading. Keeping the old device preserves a fallback local copy if the cloud upload was incomplete or the restore stops.
